发明领域
本发明通常涉及向电视观众提供信息的系统和方法，特别涉及允许观众检索、搜寻、选择和交互访问位于远地数据库、计算机网络或在线服务(例如国际互联网或万维网上的网络服务器)上的电视节目预告信息。
背景技术
随着城市或有线电视网上电视台数量的增加，观众感兴趣的节目数量也惊人地增加。利用直接接收卫星信号的碟形天线，观众可以收看到成倍数量的节目。因此，已经研制开发成功的直接在电视机荧光屏上向观众提供电视节目信息的电视节目预告系统能够帮助观众将各种节目分门别类并确定所要观看或录像的节目。在美国专利No.5,353,121(Young等人)中揭示了这样一种电视节目预告系统，它作为参考文献被包含在本发明中。在其中的一个实施例中，电视节目预告表包括一系列菜单屏幕，该屏幕包含一组对应不同电视节目的单元的阵列。观众通过翻卷单元来收看各个频道在不同时段上播放的电视节目。此外，观众为了获得有关节目的更多信息或者下拉其它子菜单获取进一步的选项，可以选择某些单元。
电视节目预告系统的最新发展(例如上述专利)给人们创造了新的机遇和挑战。其中的一个就是向观众提供了节目预告中特定节目的进一步信息。当电视观众浏览电视节目时，他或她可能希望了解更多的信息，其中包括感兴趣影片某一方面的情况(例如男女演员)、同时播放的其它电影或者各级销售商提供的旅行包或促销品。但是，由于每天都有几百个不同的节目在播放，所以向电视观众提供这类信息是有困难的。此外，被使用的信息更新很快，所以使得在现有电视节目预告中提供这类信息更加困难。
在电视播放过程中，可能还需要能与观众进行对话。许多商业活动和节目都要求观众参与，例如购买广告产品、募捐、接受问卷调查、回答问题或与其它观众竞价等。现有这类系统存在的问题是通常难以在商业活动或节目播出之后激发观众获取信息或捐赠的欲望。观众常常在商业活动或节目结束之后就忘记了广告内容或者打消了消费或获取信息的念头。存在的另一个问题是组织这些商业活动或节目的公司通常希望在确定观众身份后或观众查问详情时向观众提供更多的信息。因此需要提供一种成熟而卓有成效的方法，便于电视观众与厂商、促销商和广告商在播出商业活动或节目期间交换信息。
发明内容
本发明提供一种系统和方法，用来在可视接口上提供电视节目预告信息并允许观众检索、搜寻、选择和交互访问位于远地数据库、计算机网络或在线服务(例如因特网或万维网上的网络服务器)上的信息。电视节目预告信息可以显示于各种可视接口上，例如电视机屏幕、计算机监视器、PCTV屏幕等。电视节目预告信息可以存储在观众的计算机、电视机、PCTV或远地服务器(例如网点)内，还可以从远地数据库或计算机网络下载到观众的计算机、电视机或PCTV内。本发明还提供一种系统和方法，允许观众浏览和交互访问例如显示在电视机屏幕上的节目指南。节目指南通常包括节目预告信息区，它刊登了一天、一周或一个月内各频道上节目每次播出的时间。观众利用输入设备(例如遥控器、指点器、鼠标、键盘、麦克风等)可以浏览节目预告信息和/或获取特别感兴趣的节目更为详细的信息。
在实施例中，本发明包括提供电视节目预告信息的交互式计算机系统。这种电视节目预告信息可以全部或部分提供给电视系统、计算机监视器、PCTV等。交互式计算机系统可以利用电视节目预告信息来控制电视系统中的各种外部设备。外部设备包括电视机、录像机、机顶盒(包括有线电视盒)等。在较佳实施例中，位于计算机系统内部的存储器存储着计算机程序和接收到的数据。这些数据包括电视节目预告信息。处理器利用计算机程序将电视节目预告信息转换为所需的格式。随后在电视机屏幕或计算机监视器/显示器上以所需的格式显示电视节目预告信息。
在另一实施例中，本发明提供了一种交互式电视节目预告信息系统，它可以访问远地数据库或网络服务器(例如国际互联网或万维网)上的电视节目预告信息，并向用户提供对这些数据库和服务器的访问。对计算机网络的访问无需电话线和个人电脑。在较佳配置中，位于有线电视系统内的有线调制解调器提供了对国际互联网的访问。有线电视系统内的存储器保存计算机程序和从有线调制解调器接收的数据，例如电视节目预告信息。有线电视系统还包括利用计算机程序将电视节目预告信息转换为所需格式的处理器。随后在电视机屏幕或计算机监视器、PCTV上以所需的格式显示电视节目预告信息。
在另一实施例中，本发明提供一种系统和方法，它允许用户根据上下文与远地数据库、网络服务器或在线服务链接，并在电视节目预告信息系统中搜索和选择感兴趣节目某一方面更多的信息。在该实施例中，系统包括观众接口，它具有向观众显示电视节目预告信息的显示器；与显示器耦合的数据线，用来与外部计算机网络通信；以及存储器，它保存用来从计算机网络检索链接数据的软件。比较好的是，链接数据根据上下文与电视节目指南中的信息(例如节目标题或内容)相关联。外部计算机网络比较好的是包括国际互联网、万维网和其它已有的网络服务器。在这种方式下，电视节目预告信息系统的用户可以进行广泛的搜索来获取某一节目/电视剧的信息或者有关影片、男女演员、主题等方面的信息。
在本发明另一实施例中，提供了一种系统和方法，用来访问计算机网络(例如国际互联网或万维网)上一个或多个文件服务器内的电视节目预告信息。电视节目指南可以通过与通信链路(例如电话线等)耦合的计算机系统、电视系统、PCTV或简单的显示器访问和浏览。电视节目指南比较好的是作为一个或多个文件存储在一个或多个通过网络互联的文件服务器(例如网点)上，它们可以被访问网络的观众访问。电视节目指南或网点可以配置成直接以在线方式浏览和交互访问电视信息，或者可以配置成将信息下载到与观众接口耦合的本地处理器内。指南或网点将提供观众当地有线电视网内所有频道上的节目清单。网点还能够创建经过搜索和分类得到的个性化TV清单，它允许观众根据类别(例如频道、日期、演员、电影类型或其它需要的类别)来挑选喜爱的节目。
在本发明另一实施例中，提供了一种系统和方法，它在商业活动或节目播放期间使电视观众与广播公司和广告商直接进行交流。在该实施例中，系统包括观众接口，例如电视机、计算机、PCTV或者与计算机系统耦合的电视机；以及通信设备，用来将观众接口与计算机网络(例如国际互联网或万维网)耦合在一起。电视指南数据库或网络服务器与计算机网络耦合，或者直接与观众接口耦合，从而向观众提供电视节目预告信息。观众接口包括存储器和处理器，在合适软件(未画出)的帮助下搜索、检索和交互访问与计算机网络耦合的电视指南数据库或商业数据库  另一种做法是允许观众访问含有在显示器上运行电视节目指南的适当软件的应用程序或小应用程序(applet，例如JAVATMapplet)，从而可以通过计算机网络提供这种功能。
在上述实施例中，商家(例如百威啤酒公司)和/或电视广播公司(例如ABC)也可以自己拥有与观众接口耦合的数据库。在这种方式下，观众可以在电视节目播放期间或者他在浏览电视节目指南时直接访问这些数据库。例如，观众可以直接通过商业赞助商或者通过电视节目指南提供的发货系统购买产品或服务。这种类型的广告可以使广告商把精力直接集中在某一节目上，并使用户能在广告播放期间直接购买到产品。因此就不会有商业活动或节目结束之后观众忘记广告内容或者打消了消费或获取信息念头的情况出现。

实施发明的较佳方式
本发明所提供的系统和方法被用来向电视观众提供电视节目预告信息，允许观众链接、搜寻、选择和交互访问位于远地数据库、计算机网络或在线服务器(例如国际互联网或万维网上的网络服务器)上的信息。电视节目预告信息可以显示于各种观众接口上，例如电视机屏幕、计算机监视器、PCTV屏幕等。电视节目预告信息可以保存在观众的计算机、电视机、PCTV或者远地服务器(例如网点)内，或者从远地数据库或计算机网络下载到观众的计算机、电视机或PCTV上。在美国专利Nos.5,353,121和5,479,266中描述了可以与本发明一起使用的合适的电视节目预告系统或影像指南，上述专利作为参考文献包含在本发明中。本发明的系统和方法也可以与SuperGuideTM影像指南一起使用，该品牌出自位于北卡来罗纳州Shelby的SuperGuide股份公司。
在实施例中，本发明包括一套交互式计算机系统，它帮助观众利用电视节目预告信息并与数据库链接从而搜索和检索信息。比较好的是，这样的信息根据电视节目预告信息中的电视节目进行上下文的组织。详情参见附图，在附图中相同的单元用同一标号表示，在图1-7中示出了与本发明上下文链接系统和方法一起使用的典型电视节目预告系统2。如图1所示，节目预告系统包括与电视系统30耦合的计算机系统10。计算机系统10包括标准的计算机12，例如个人电脑(IBM兼容机，Macintosh机等)。计算机12还可以位于机顶盒(例如DSS盒)内。计算机12包括硬驱14、处理器16和向计算机12提供各种其它软件的磁盘输入18。输入设备20使得观众可以交互访问计算机12和/或电视节目指南(将在图12-17中描述)。线路23与计算机12上的串口、并口或其它数据端口相连。该线路23被用来将其它设备/单元与计算机12相连。
在另一实施例中，计算机系统10可以与电视系统20组合构成PCTV。在该实施例中，计算机通常包括被单独用来运行节目指南和相关软件的处理器，或者处理器还可以运行其它应用程序，例如字处理、图形处理等。计算机通常包括在电视机内从而可以将电视机显示器同时作为电视屏幕和计算机监视器。另一种做法是，电视机可以包括在计算机内从而使计算机监视器完成这种双重功能。通常情况下，如上所述，PCTV包括一定数量的输入设备，例如键盘、鼠标和遥控器等。但是，这些输入设备也可以组合成单一的设备，它借助按键、轨迹球、指点器、翻卷机构、语音控制或它们的组合来输入命令。
电视机系统30包括普通民用电视机32和用户输入设备20。电视系统30可以包括也可以不包括录像机(VCR)。在本实施例中，VCR34和36与电视机32耦合。这些VCR34和36可以是例如任何民用VCR或者其它类型的记录设备(模拟的或数字的)。输入设备20使得观众能够与电视机32、VCR34和/或VCR36双向交流。在1996年6月17日提交的美国专利申请分案中描述了一种与本发明一起使用的合适的输入设备，它作为参考文献被包含在本发明中。线路37用来和其它设备与VCR34链接。其它设备也可以在VCR34与电视机32之间经线路38串联。在这种配置下，计算机12(或计算机系统10)和电视机32(或电视系统30)可以位于私宅或商务楼的几个房间内。
在实施例中，磁盘、CD ROM或其它介质上提供的计算机程序包含接收、组织和显示电视节目指南数据所需的软件。这些磁盘被插入磁盘输入18内并将磁盘上的软件存储在计算机12内的硬盘14上或者其它海量存储设备内。该过程可以由例如用户或服务人员完成。计算机程序也可以例如通过下载获得，下载的途径有借助卫星24或陆基线路(例如同轴电缆、电话线、光纤等)的国际互联网或其它在线服务。
除了计算机程序以外，还需要用来生成和维护电视预告指南的基本预告信息数据和其它有关数据(例如与特定影片有关的数据)。在较佳实施例中，这些数据都经线路22接收；它们也可以从卫星24经卫星广播提供。此外，电视节目预告信息和有关数据可以经卫星24直接向电视机32发送。在这种布局下，电视节目预告信息无需从计算机系统10发送至电视系统30。
在实施例中，线路22为电话线，它经普通调制解调器提供了对国际互联网或其它在线服务的访问，或者经直接调制解调器提供对节目预告商的访问。随后预告数据从远地数据库经国际互联网或其它在线服务提供，或直接由服务供应商提供。如上所述，线路22也可以是例如同轴电缆、光纤或其它任何可以向计算机12提供数据的陆基线路。存储在硬盘14上的软件程序随后利用线路22上接收的数据生成电视节目指南。用户可以根据需要检索生成的电视节目指南。
图2示出了在计算机屏幕(连同用户输入设备)上显示的电视节目指南的实例。在较佳实施例中，电视节目预告信息提供在计算机屏幕50的网格状显示区域内。在本实例中，各频道提供在网格状指南区域的Y轴上，而时间提供在网格状指南区域的X轴上。该显示区域也可以在屏幕区域52内包含用户特殊指令并在屏幕区域54内包含专供用户的广告。图2中的电视节目指南已经由用户定制成只将频道2、3、4、5、7、HBO、SHO和PBS包括在显示的指南区域内。在实施例中，计算机系统10或电视系统30内的电视机可以用作计算机屏幕50。
用户可以借助输入设备60翻卷网格状指南中提供的电视节目预告信息。用户输入设备60可以是例如带箭头键的键盘、计算机点设备(例如鼠标)或者语音识别输入。用户可以利用用户输入设备60对计算机屏幕50上显示的电视节目指南内的频道进行分类、混排和按照特定要求定制。此外，用户可以自动调谐所需的节目或者选择不同的节目自动录像。有关自动调谐和自动录像的详细情况，可以参见已经转让给星视电视广播有线公司的美国专利No.B1 4,706,121和美国专利申请No.08/423,411。它们作为参考文献包含在本发明中。
在本发明另一实施例中，计算机12配备有包含调谐器的电视/视频卡。当电视/视频卡安装在计算机12内之后，计算机用户就可以在计算机监视器50上收看选定的电视节目/影片。因此，当用户选择自动调谐的电视节目时，电视/视频卡被调谐至传送所选电视节目的频道从而在计算机监视器50上自动播放选定的电视节目。
在图1所示本发明实施例中，由于有两台VCR34和36，所以可以自动录下同时播放的两台节目。用户只需选定要录像的两台节目而本发明将在毫无察觉的情况下自动将播出的节目录下。用户也可以直接选择由哪台设备来录像或调谐所挑选的节目。例如，用户打算用VCR34录下M.A.S.H62而用VCR36录下I LOVELUCY64。在本实例中，硬盘14上的计算机软件在节目开始时刻，(1)将VCR34调谐至播放I LOVE LUCY的频道，(2)开启VCR34，以及(3)启动VCR34的录像功能。如果I LOVE LUCY与M.A.S.H同时开始，则软件几乎同时如下动作，(1)将VCR36调谐至播放M.A.S.H的频道，(2)开启VCR36，以及(3)启动VCR36的录像功能。在M.A.S.H的节目结束时刻，软件关闭录像功能并随后关闭VCR34。在I LOVE LUCY的节目结束时刻，对VCR36也执行相同的指令序列。
在较佳实施例中，采用两台电子设备来提供节目预告/控制系统。这两台电子设备使得计算机系统与电视系统能够交互操作。第一台电子设备为计算机附件而第二台电子设备为录像机控制器/连接器(VCR连接器)。第二台电子设备也可以是电视连接器、机顶盒连接器等。
图3示出了计算机系统的计算机附件。计算机附件70是能够控制电视机30、VCR34和/或VCR36的任一外部硬件。在较佳实施例中，计算机附件70通过串口、并口或其它端口23与计算机12链接。在较佳实施例中，计算机附件内的时钟72保存当前时间。当计算机附件的常规电源不供电时电池74继续供电。存储器76包含录像和/或调谐选定电视节目所需的按键参数。这些参数包括节目日期、节目开始时刻、结束时刻、播放节目的频道以及使用哪一台外部设备来录像或收看节目。
位于计算机附件70内的处理器10利用计算机系统内的软件向存储器76提供按键参数。存储器76为随机存储器(RAM)而射频发射机78例如类似于便携式电话或射频无绳耳机内提供的发射机。射频发射机78例如可以用IR发射器、调制光信号(即通过光纤发送的信号)或者甚至是有线连接。在较佳实施例中，射频发射机78与远端的VCR连接器90结合使用以将自动调谐和/或自动录像所需的参数传送给电视系统30。处理器80利用时钟72和存储器76提供射频发射机78发射所需的信息。
图4示出了供电视系统使用的录像设备连接器。在较佳实施例中，录像设备(例如VCR)连接器90经线路37与电视系统30内的VCR34耦合。该连接器90也可以是连接电视机32的电视连接器。VCR连接器90包括接收来自射频发射机78的信息的射频接收机。红外线(IR)驱动器76随后与IR驱动器96和IR发射器协同工作以向电视系统30内的其它外部设备提供所需的信号。处理器99在该过程中起辅助作用。
例如，如果用户决定将电视机调谐至正在播放或者的某台节目上或者将电视机预先设定在将来某一时刻所要播放节目上，则借助用户输入设备60将光标移至计算机屏幕50内所需的条目上并按键确认(用键盘则按“enter”键而用鼠标则“单击”)。信息于是经线路23提供计算机附件70并随后自动经射频发射机78发送给射频接收机74。IR驱动器96和IR发射器98随后从RF接收机94中提取信息并立即将电视机32调谐至播放所选电视节目的频道。对于本发明可以采用不止一个的IR驱动器96。例如一个IR驱动器用于电视机32，而另一个可用于VCR34。此外，计算机附件70和VCR连接器90(或者如下所述的提供这些功能的替代设备)可以位于私宅或商务楼的不同房间内。
如果用户已经从计算机上选定在VCR34上录像的节目，则在节目开始时刻，启动VCR进行录像的信息自动从射频接收机94经线路37，通过VCR连接器90传送到VCR34。在较佳实施例中，当处于选定节目开始时刻，(1)VCR开启，(2)调谐器(或外部设备)调谐至播放选定节目的频道，以及(3)启动VCR的录像功能。接着，当节目结束时，关闭VCR的录像功能并关闭VCR。在这种布局下，不采用红外线驱动器96和红外线发射器98。
在较佳实施例中，当采用红外线驱动器96和红外线发射器98时，它们的作用是遥控电视系统30内部的其它外部设备(例如电视机32、VCR36等)。例如，如果选择同时播放的两台节目进行自动录像，则红外线驱动器96和红外线发射器98就被用来(1)将第二VCR的调谐器调谐至播放选定节目的频道上。有关如何利用红外线发射器完成遥控功能的其它情况可参见美国专利No.5,151,789，该专利作为参考文献被包含在本发明中。
在本发明的另一实施例中，VCR连接器90通过线路38串联在VCR34与电视机32之间。在这种布局下，由于射频接收机94接收的信息可以经线路38传送至VCR34或电视机32上，所以无需红外线驱动器96和红外线发射器98。例如，线路38被用来发送自动调谐的数据。当用户选择即刻收看的电视节目时，就从射频发射机78向射频接收机94发送调谐命令，将电视调谐器调谐至播放所需节目的频道上。处理器80随后从射频接收机经线路38向电视机32发送调谐命令。
在本发明另一实施例中，红外线驱动器96和红外线发射器98位于计算机附件70内部(参见图3)。当采用该配置时，无需VCR连接器90。例如，当选择自动调谐的电视节目时，红外线驱动器96和红外线发射器98一起工作以将电视机32调谐至播放所需节目的频道。同样，当选择所需的电视节目进行自动录像时，红外线驱动器96和红外线发射器98在节目开始时刻，(1)将VCR调谐至播放所需节目的频道上。该布局可以用于同一时刻有多个电视节目需要自动录像的情况。其操作与上述方式相同。而且如果需要，向计算机12提供电视节目预告信息的数据可以变换为所需的格式并经过计算机附件70向电视机32发送以供即时收看。对于这种布局下电视机32上的自动播放来说，计算机附件70必须包括屏幕播放发生器(OSD)82。
在本发明另一实施例，计算机附件70位于计算机12内部(参见图1，射频发射机78位于计算机12内部)并且/或者VCR连接器90位于例如VCR34或电视机32的内部。由于射频发射机可以遥控所有的外部设备，所以计算机附件70和VCR连接器90的位置没有严格规定。
在本发明另一实施例中，计算机附件70和VCR连接器90单元位于计算机12内部。因此不需要射频发射机和射频接收机。计算机12最好是包含内部电池和时钟，从而省去电池94和时钟74。存储器76可以由硬盘14提供。由于处理器16可以完成这些功能，所以可以省去处理器19。在本实施例中，红外线驱动器96和红外线发射器98向电视机32和VCR34与36提供了调谐和记录参数(见图1中红外线驱动器96和红外线发射器98在计算机12内部的布置)。同样，如果在这种布局中计算机12包含电视/视频卡，则可以在计算机屏幕50上收看选定的电视节目。此外，选定的电视节目可以存储在计算机12的存储器或海量存储设备内(例如硬盘14、磁盘或磁带)。因此无需发射用于自动调谐和录像的参数并且无需相关的红外线装置96和98。最后，计算机12、电视机30、VCR37和所有其它的电子设备都可以放在家用网络上。在该布局中，无需发射机或内部接收机。
图5示出了安装过程的流程图。过程流程图示出了在安装接收、组织和显示电视节目信息网格状指南所需的计算机程序过程中所用的顺序。该安装流程可以建立帐户并下载节目预告信息。在较佳实施例中，电视节目指南所需的数据被下载到硬盘14中。如上所述，提供计算机程序的磁盘被插入磁盘输入18中并将程序安装在硬盘14上。用户随后被提示输入各种信息。系统首先在步骤110问询用户邮政编码。在步骤120查问付帐信息，并在步骤130提问付款方式以及有关的支付信息。在另一实施例中，可以在每次用户连入在线服务时输入付帐信息(例如信用卡信息等)。此外，在步骤120进行了自动确认。例如，用户可以从前次系统使用中已获取鉴别号码。该鉴别号码得到确认后将允许系统访问所存储的包括用户付帐数据在内的用户详细信息。
在较佳实施例中，在步骤140查问建立通信用的调制解调器速度(该步骤是可选的)。在步骤150，计算机程序和处理器16结合起来检查是否需要更新时间间隔。更新时间间隔决定了用户电视节目指南更新的频率。例如，可以在每次计算机12启动时或者一天一次或者每周四次更新。如果需要更新时间间隔，则在步骤160向用户发送请求。如果不需要时间间隔，则在步骤170连入主网点。主网点经线路22提供电视节目指南所需的数据并接收付帐用信用卡号码等信息。用户随后在步骤180选定计算机屏幕50上播放的频道。随后在步骤190用户被提示输入或选择IR代码。这些IR代码被用来与电视系统30内的外部设备通信。在较佳实施例中，这些IR代码被发送至计算机附件70的存储器76内。接着在步骤200，经线路22下载电视节目预告所需的数据。在步骤210，处理器16和安装在硬盘14上的计算机程序一起工作以生成显示于计算机屏幕50上的节目指南。
图6示出了节目预告/控制系统操作的流程图。在步骤250，用户经串口或并口23将计算机附件70与计算机12耦合起来。在步骤260，用户经线路34将VCR连接器90连接至VCR34。在步骤270，磁盘输入18被用来向硬盘14提供接收、组织和显示系统电视节目指南数据所需的软件。该软件还提供了本发明中自动调谐和自动无干预录像的功能。因此从磁盘上拷录该软件并在硬盘14上进行保存/安装。在步骤280，用户或服务人员完成图5中的安装/设置程序。在步骤290，经电话线22接收更新节目预告信息所需的数据。
在步骤300，用户可以输入其它任何电视节目指南显示所需的显示参数。例如，用户可以从显示的电视节目指南中删除某些频道，或者用户可以在指南内按照特定次序排列电视频道。在步骤310，根据用户要求，在如图2所示的计算机屏幕50上显示电视节目指南。在步骤320，用户可以经用户输入设备60从电视节目指南中键入选项。用户可以选择自动调谐或自动无干预录像的节目。在步骤330，软件确定当前时刻是否为自动调谐或录像的时间。在步骤360，如果当前时刻与节目开始时刻不一致，则软件处于等待状态。在步骤340，如果当前时刻与该时刻一致，则由软件完成自动调谐或自动录像。在上述美国专利申请No.08/423,411中描述了自动调谐和自动录像。随后完成图6的流程图。
在本发明另一实施例中，例如位于硬盘14上的计算机程序可以监视和跟踪用户选择。该计算机程序随后可以用来向用户提供推荐的电视节目。此外，如果需要，计算机程序可以自动安排推荐的电视节目以供自动调谐和自动无干预录像。
图7示出了按照本发明的用来向电视机提供外部数据库上电视节目预告信息供显示用的几种配置。在实施例中，在线信息提供商(Prodigy、America On Line、Compuserve、MSN、AT&T等)提供了对包含电视节目预告信息的数据库的访问。这些在线信息提供商可以向电视机100发送数据。在本实施例中，利用附件102内部的调制解调器来提供数据。附件102附在电视机100上并且经调制解调器与电话线102相连。访问在线服务的调制解调器也可以安置在电视机100内。安装在附件102或者电视机100内的软件被用来搜寻和提供具有如下所述其它特点的数据。
电视机100上显示的可用数据可以仿真计算机在线用户通常在通过个人电脑访问国际互联网时所见的情景。这种电视节目预告数据还可以“捆绑”到用户收看的影片上。附件102也可以用附在机顶盒120(例如有线电视盒)上的附件122代替。随后，由在线信息提供商提供的数据经线路110发送至电视机100。同样，附于VCR130的附件132可以用来获取电视节目预告信息。随后数据从VCR130经线路150发送至电视机100。
在另一实施例中，包含电视节目预告信息的数据库位于电视机100的存储器106内。控制器102被用来从存储器106获取数据从而在电视机100上显示。包含电视节目预告信息的数据库也可以位于存储器126(机顶盒120内部)或者存储器136(VCR130内部)内。控制器121或131被用来获取通过线路110或150向电视机100发送的供显示用的数据。因此，能够将数据库中电视节目预告信息提供给电视机供显示用的技术并不局限于任何特定的数据系统。总之，该技术可以应用在用户的机顶盒120、电视机100、VCR130、个人电脑等之中。
由数据库提供的电视节目预告信息可以被用来提供与观众节目选择无关的信息。例如，用户可以利用遥控110在电视节目指南上按下服务按钮。服务按钮可以放置在遥控110或者电视节目指南显示区域上。当按下服务按钮时，用户给出诸如新闻、天气、体育、美式足球、财经数据、本地交通等选择。随后用户利用遥控110选择感兴趣的区域或标题并从数据库中获取有关信息。如果采用附件102，则由调制解调器访问从数据库提供信息的在线服务。一旦连接成功，则用户与在线服务提供商可以进行双向通信。用户随后可以进入更深层的给定的选项，或者如果需要，可以访问国际互联网并用键盘在聊天室聊天或接收其它交互式服务。在较佳实施例中，键盘是红外线键盘或者与附件102上的端口106相连。
在另一实施例中，电视节目标题和/或节目内容通过上下文与在线服务或者可用的数据库链接。在这种布局下，用户借助电子节目指南(或者导航系统)提供的数据可以链接、搜寻和选择感兴趣节目或节目标题的更多信息。在较佳实施例中，电子节目指南的用户(例如，如上所述)可以通过用户接口进行有关特定节目/电视剧信息或者有关剧目、男女演员、主题和其它相关内容信息的搜索。只要可以在电子节目指南中能够访问该节目标题，就可以将节目标题和/或节目内容与其它相关信息链接起来。此外，只要用户通过当前调谐的节目发出请求，就可以利用这种链接。
例如，预览影片节目(例如“Casablanca”)的用户可以接收到下列有关信息：(1)影片中的男女演员，(2)同一时间播放的其它影片，(3)有关的产品，(4)有关的旅行包，以及(5)广告和通过初级、次级和三级商家提供的促销品。用户利用诸如遥控110或键盘162之类的用户接口可以告知电子节目指南他希望在电视机100上收看节目的信息。随后电子节目指南将选项列出供用户选择。在较佳实施例中，选项与选定节目的上下文关联并且可以通过电子节目指南供应商改变。在“Casablanca”一例中，选项可以是(1)其它的Humphrey Bogart影片，(2)其它的Lauren Bacall影片，(3)同一时代的其它影片，或者(4)相关的产品。用户从现成的选项中进行选择，并且电子节目指南与可利用信息的数据库连接和通信以提供涉及用户选项的更多信息。一旦在用户与可用电视信息的数据库之间建立起连接和通信之后，电子节目指南的作用就好比确保信息流与合适数据顺利交换的中介人。此时，用户可以从一组选项或有关主题中选择进入进一步的信息内容。例如，如果用户选择(1)其它Humphrey Bogart影片选项，则电子节目指南连接所选的可用信息数据库并与其通信。随后利用可用信息数据库来收集要求得到的其它Humphrey Bogart的影片数据。被选定的选项被电子节目指南发送和用作搜索时的上下文参考。随后在电视机100上显示搜索结果清单。
一旦用户看到其它Humphrey Bogart影片的清单，他就可以从中加以挑选以供录像和收看。在较佳实施例中，每次连接可用信息数据库并进行搜索时，可以确认出前次选定的影片。此外，用户可以在电子节目指南采用某一节目之前选择某种类型的节目进行录像和收看。而且每次与在线服务进行连接时，软件可以搜索数据库并设定所录节目的类型。这些特点使得消费者不会错过自己喜爱的节目。
本发明的系统和方法可以配置成根据观众或观众群体(例如家庭)的偏好自动或手动定制电视节目指南。在本实施例中，可以采用遥控设备来选择某一节目，并且由存储器将观众选定的电视节目存储起来。选择节目的理由可以多种多样，例如出于个人爱好，放置节目收看提醒条，或者当电视节目预告系统包括录像设备时将录像节目的自动提醒条放置在节目指南上。用户也可以根据节目的标题定制专门的特殊选项。通过一系列的重复操作，电子节目指南可以选定用户感兴趣的节目、标题或服务。这可以通过用户接口完成，其中由用户回答偏爱的选项或选择问题，或者由电子节目指南通过启发式学习完成。电子节目指南包括完成定制的软件。
在示意性实施例中，系统包括的一个数据库包含了电视节目预告内的每个节目。数据库可以包含在与电视机组成一个整体的计算机(例如PCTV)内，这是一台通过合适接线与电视机连接的计算机，或者数据库可以从远地计算机经国际互联网或其它通信媒介访问。在数据库内，每个节目与各种准则或特征关联，例如某个演员、导演、影片类型(动作片、喜剧片)等。当观众根据爱好选定节目时，他或她将选择指定所喜爱节目的准则或理由(例如演员、导演等)。计算机包括处理器和合适的软件，用来在数据库中自动搜索具有同样准则的其他节目。处理器自动将包含指定条件的节目放入选择窗口并在节目指南的矩阵格子内加以直观表示。在这种方式下，节目指南根据各个观众的要求自动定制出来以便电视节目预告的使用。在1996年6月17日提交的共同待批的美国专利申请中对该方法有详细的描述，该申请作为参考文献被包含在本发明中。
图8和9示出了按照本发明的交互式电视节目预告系统200，它可以从国际互联网访问电视节目预告信息并向用户提供对国际互联网的访问。在本实施例中无需与任何电话线相连和采用个人电脑就可以提供对国际互联网的访问。如图8所示，交互式电视节目预告系统200包括与电视系统220耦合的有线系统210。有线系统210一般包括处理器212和存储器214。电视系统220包括电视机222和用户接口设备240。与上述实施例相同，电视系统220可以包括与电视机222耦合的VCR224和226。在具体的实施例中，有线系统210的存储器214存储用来接收、组织和在电视节目指南上显示接收数据的软件216。除了软件216以外，基本的节目预告信息数据和其他相关数据(例如与特定影片有关的数据)也存储在存储器214内以用于生成和维护电视节目指南。在较佳实施例中，数据通过可以从国际互联网访问数据的有线调制解调器接收。随后软件216利用从有线调制解调器218接收的数据以生成电视节目指南。用户可以在需要的时候检索生成的电视节目指南。
在图8所示本发明的实施例中，由于有两台VCR224和226，所以可以录像同时提供的两台节目。用户只需选定所要录像的两台节目而本发明将在节目播放时自动录像。用户也可以直接选定录像或调谐每个被选节目所用的设备。有关的其他信息，可参见美国专利No.5,151,789，该专利作为参考文献被包含在本发明中。
图9示出了从有线系统210向电视机提供电视节目预告信息以供显示的布局。在实施例中，有线系统218提供了对在线数据库的访问；数据库包含电视节目预告信息，并且信息被发送给电视机。存储器214内存储的软件216用来搜索和提供信息，并提供下面将要描述的几个其他特点。电视机上显示的可用数据可以保存在有线系统210的存储器214内或者电视机222的数据库248内。控制器252用来从存储器214或者数据库248获取数据以在电视机222上显示。在电视节目指南上，用户可以利用用户接口240按下“服务”按钮。服务按钮位于用户接口上或者电视节目指南显示区域内。当按下服务按钮时，用户可以有诸如新闻、天气、体育、美式足球、财经数据、本地交通、网络之类的选项。利用用户接口，用户可以选择感兴趣的区域或者标题，并由数据库提供有关的信息。
用户可以通过利用用户接口选择网络来访问国际互联网。有线调制解调器218访问国际互联网，并且一旦连通，用户与在线服务提供商之间即建立起双向通信。用户随后可以访问不同的在线服务。例如，收看体育赛事的用户可以按下服务按钮，并且出现具有以下选项的不同菜单：(1)比赛成绩，(2)当前比赛统计，(3)当前选手统计，以及(4)相关产品。如果用户选择(4)相关产品，则软件通知有线调制解调器并命令其与在线服务提供商建立联系。在线服务提供商随后列出与比赛有关的一系列选择(例如49er’s hats，Giant’s Baseball Bats from LouisvilleSlugger，Nike Spiked Football shoes for Pop Warner等)，并且用户由此可以与服务提供商对话。
图10示出了访问计算机网络60(例如国际互联网或万维网)上一个或多个服务器350的电视节目预告信息的系统和方法。电视节目信息指南可以通过与通信链路(例如电话线)耦合的计算机系统、电视系统、PCTV或者简单的显示器访问和察看，在典型的实施例中，PCTV362上带有用户输入设备364(例如遥控器、键盘、鼠标等)和访问网络360的通信设备366。如上所述，通信设备366可以包括各种数据线路，例如电话线、有线调制解调器等。
在实施例中，计算机网络360包括多个服务器350和数据库370。数据库370包括可以在PCTV362上检索和察看的电视节目预告信息。服务器350代表包含文件、数据库等的文件服务器。在典型的实施例中，计算机网络为万维网并且每个服务器350都设立为具有唯一地址的可寻址网络文件服务器。例如，服务器350可以配置成遵守诸如传输控制协议(TCP)和国际互联网协议(IP)(它们统称为TCP/IP)之类的常见网络协议，并且分配有唯一的IP地址或者国际互联网域名。例如，服务器可以分配到域名“invoice.com”。服务器350也可以安装一定形式的服务器软件从而允许系统被用作国际互联网图形服务器。例如，服务器350可以配置超文本传输协议(HTTP)服务器软件从而允许系统被用作国际互联网“万维网”(WWW)服务器。在本实施例中，PCTV362可以利用WWW兼容软件通过WWW访问系统网址为“HTTP：//www.invoice.com”的服务器350。
在另一实施例中，电视节目指南(未画出)作为一个或多个文件(例如网点)存储在观众可以通过万维网访问的的服务器350上。电视节目指南或者网点可以配置成直接以在线方式察看和交互访问电视节目信息，或者可以配置成将信息下载到计算机硬盘或者其他合适的处理器中。指南将提供观众所在地有线电视网所有频道的节目清单信息。比较好的是，指南能够生成具有搜索和分类特征的个性化TV节目清单以允许观众根据类别(例如频道、日期、演员、影片类型和其他类别)挑选自己喜爱的节目。指南还可以包括有关节目的其他信息，例如收费、影星、影片类型(例如悬念片、喜剧片、戏剧片、西部片、音乐片、儿童片、传记片、恐怖片等)等。这类信息可以在实际的网点上提供，或者由网点提供将观众与其他网点链接起来的手段以提供有关主题或分类更多的信息。
由于电视节目指南网点可以从世界上任何地方访问，所以比较好的是包括选择电视节目指南适用区域的机构。例如，电视节目指南可以包括全世界各国的电视节目预告信息，或者可以将信息指南局限于美国。为了获取特定区域的电视节目预告信息，用户可以选择适当的州、城市或者其他区域，例如特定有线电视公司覆盖的区域。电视节目指南也可以提供某些全国性的网络和电视台的信息来代替特定的频道或电视台，例如CBS、FOX、HBO等。在这种配置下，电视节目指南可以包括时区选择从而使指南自动配置成收看电视节目用户所在的时区。
在本发明的实施例中，系统包括使观众能够搜索某段时间内播放的特定类型节目的搜索引擎。搜索引擎包括诸如标题、说明、类别、日期、频道、演员、导演等的分类。此外，观众可以获取各分类中节目的更多的信息。例如，指南提供了许多分类中影片的信息，包括戏剧、电视剧、西班牙语、法语等。指南可以告诉你本周播放Clint Eastwood的哪部影片，周末播放几集Startrek，或者星期六是否播放你喜爱的棒球队的比赛。在线观众可以根据标题、年份、演员、导演、主题、著名名星排行榜、MPAA、警告级别、激光视盘、影片类型等定制自己的节目清单。在另一实施例中，指南提供了电影和连续剧的信息，包括网络电影、第一次播放时间、PBS等。用户可以根据例如标题、播放时间、电影类型等排序。
在本发明另一方面中，网点电视指南包括高亮度的选项，它表示一天、一周或一个月内将要播放的特定节目。例如，指南可以包含提示一周内每天热门节目的网页，并在影视热门节目中提供画面或影像连同文字信息。此外，用户能够转移至提供更多信息的其他条目，例如小品文、演员专访、编辑观点、评论等。
在本发明另一方面，系统包括位于同一或不同网络服务器上的各种文件，服务器使得用户能够与其他用户、节目赞助商和广告商交流。例如，系统拥有的网点可以使观众就某一节目发表意见(每个节目本身就可以有自己的网点)。此外，系统可以包括在国际互联网上搜索已有网点并将观众引入感兴趣网点的“虚拟中介人”。虚拟中介人从用户先前的选项中了解其兴趣并针对特定的观众定制电视节目指南。
图11示出了按照本发明的系统和方法，用来在商业活动或节目播放期间将电视观众与广播公司和广告商联系在一起。如图所示，系统300包括观众接口302，例如电视机、计算机、PCTV或与计算机系统耦合的电视机。为便于描述，本系统利用PCTV302。诸如有线调制解调器、电话线或其他通信链路之类的数据线路304将PCTV302与远地数据库、网络服务器或在线服务(例如国际互联网)耦合起来。电视节目指南数据库308还与国际互联网306耦合以现PCTV302提供电视节目预告信息。该信息可以下载到PCTV302中，或者只有在观众实际连入数据库308时供其察看。电视节目指南也可以从PCTV的处理器中获取。如图所示，厂商(例如Budweiser啤酒公司)和/或电视广播公司(例如ABC)也可以有直接与PCTV302耦合或者通过国际互联网耦合的数据库。
PCTV302包括存储器和带合适软件(未画出)的处理器，用来根据用户选择搜索和检索国际互联网306上数据库内的信息。该功能也可以通过国际互联网、电视节目指南数据库308或者厂商310或广播公司312提供。在本实施例中，PCTV可以访问应用程序或者小应用程序(例如JAVATMapplet)，它们包含能够在显示器(例如计算机监视器、电视机显示器或其他用户接口)上运行电视节目指南的合适软件。
在实例中，观众正在收看体育赛事，例如足球比赛。在电视机屏幕的常用位置上(例如右上角)排列有一个或多个图标或其他直观的指示符。其中一个图标可以代表电视节目指南。观众可以将光标或其他直观指示符移动到电视指南图标上并单击以打开下面将要讨论的电视节目指南。例如还可以由商业赞助商提供另一个图标。观众移动至该图标并将其激活后就可以链接至商业赞助商提供的数据库上或者一部分电视节目指南数据库上，从而能够购买广告产品、募捐、接收调查、回答问题或者参加竞价。
利用实例的方法，Budweiser啤酒公司可以提供数据库310，使观众用赠券购买六盒免费啤酒或者其他赠品，例如Budweiser的T恤衫、帽子等。观众可以直接通过商业赞助商或电视节目指南提供的发放系统购买赠券商品、帽子或T恤衫。这种广告方式使得广告商直接针对特定的节目，并且使观众可以在播放广告时直接购买产品。此外，也不会出现在商业活动或节目之后观众忘记广告内容或者打消花钱或获取信息念头的情况。
在另一实例中，播放节目的电视网络可以提供图标，使得观众能够访问提供有关足球比赛、将要播放的节目等更多信息的数据库312。
图12-17示出了带网格状指南的电视节目预告系统和利用电视节目预告系统和上下文链接系统的方法。显然本发明并不局限于图12-17所示的特定电视节目预告系统。例如，在作为本专利申请附录的用户手册“Using Starsight 2”中或者在美国专利申请Nos.5,353,121、5,479,266中描述了其他的电视节目预告系统。但是，图12-17所示的电视节目预告系统200由于能够使观众迅速而便捷地浏览电视节目预告并交互访问各种涉及电视节目预告中节目的服务，所以有利于与本发明的上下文链接系统一起使用。
图12A和12B分别示出了用于本发明电视节目预告系统的节目指南102和频道指南104。节目指南102是电视节目预告系统的基本形式，它在特定屏幕上包括一系列的信息区域或窗口，观众通过操作诸如遥控器之类的输入设备上下左右移动光标并与屏幕区域的功能对话。在每个屏幕区域内有一个或多个条目，它们一般排列成矩阵或网格状，从而使观众可以翻卷网格以选择或激活网格内的条目。激活条目会引出子菜单、对话框、面板，产生响应动作等。
如图12A所示，节目指南102比较好的是包括节目预告信息区域106，它包含登载一天内每个频道电影播放时间的格子或条目的节目矩阵。节目指南102在矩阵108上沿垂直栏目列出频道而沿水平栏目列出时间。如图所示，观众可以用遥控设备垂直翻卷到特定的时间或者水平翻卷到特定的频道。当观众翻卷矩阵108时，光标110指示矩阵108内用户的位置。条目还可以自动用更明亮的颜色表示观众的选择位置。比较好的是节目矩阵108也带上阴影以表示电影已经播放的部分。例如如图12A所示，阴影延伸到7：48(当前时刻显示在节目指南102的右下角)以表示观众已经错过收看影片的哪一部分。
如图12A所示，节目指南102包括一系列其他信息区域。例如，节目指南102包括模式菜单区域112，用来指示当前激活的模式(即节目指南102)并使观众可以下拉模式菜单114(常见图13A)。节目指南102还包括数据区域116，用来指示节目矩阵106内反映的数据并且使观众可以下拉日期子菜单来改变日期。在其他子模式中，子模式菜单将显示排序或显示与子模式有适当关系的清单的选项。位于节目矩阵106左边的成比例滚动条120直观地正比于节目矩阵106中的信息总量以在用户垂直翻卷矩阵106时提供直观的指示。此外，通过移动至滚动条120并随后进行垂直移动可以在成百个频道/节目内浏览。通过移动至退出区域122并单击遥控设备可以立即退回电视节目。节目区域126表示当前调谐的节目而预览窗口区域128用于各种提示、说明或影像或图形提示，例如在电影矩阵106内呈高亮度的影片预览。预览窗口区域128也可以和指南102的其他区域一样具有交互式的特点。
节目指南还包括各种附加区域，以便使用电视节目预告系统、向观众提供当前信息或者作节目广告或其他产品。例如，翻卷的商业信息124可以位于节目矩阵106下方，给节目赞助商作节目广告或产品广告。观众可以浏览消息124以接收信息或购买节目或产品。
条目排序功能并不局限于视频应用。例如，节目可以访问其他上下文链接的服务(例如商店)从而使购买者直接或间接地通过特定的节目购买各种服务或商品。例如，Monday Night Football的Info菜单可以使观众翻卷子菜单从而购买到Washinton Redskin的帽子、Minnesota Vikings的帽子或NFL的帽子。观众可以选择跟随节目链接关系进入商业区域，在那里商品或服务的选择余地更大。如果是象帽子之类的商品，则可以引导观众直接进入NFL专卖店，而电影点播的链接关系则引导观众进入商业电影图书馆。
图12B示出了频道指南模式下本发明的电视节目预告系统。如图所示，除了包含信息屏幕区域130以外频道指南104与节目指南102相似，区域130与节目指南中的信息屏幕区域106相反。因此观众可以沿着一个频道在时间上沿垂直方向前后移动并在频道之间水平移动。
图13A-13C示出了用遥控设备2从当前调谐节目上访问节目指南102并浏览其他当前调谐节目的方法。如图13A所示，观众正在收看显示器屏幕132上播放的电视节目，例如星期一晚上Washinton Redskins与Minnesota Viking之间的足球比赛。在遥控设备上单击就自动进入Program InfiMenu130，从而弹出电视屏幕132(常见图13B)。Program Infomenu130使观众可以获取有关当前调谐节目的更多信息，移动至节目指南102，移动至上下文链接服务，或者退出InfoMenu130回到电视节目。观众可以垂直翻卷这些选项，并选择其中之一。例如，如图12A所示，单击“Go to program guide”选项后立即进入节目指南。为了浏览其他当前调谐的节目，观众通过遥控设备(未画出)进行合适的频道控制或其他输入命令。如图13C所示，观众可以在收看当前调谐节目时浏览其他信息菜单。
图14A-14E示出了利用本发明的系统进行视频点播的方法。如图14A所示，观众打开节目的InforMenu130并向下翻卷至“链接服务”条目。随后如图14B所示，在观众面前出现与该节目有关的易于翻卷的条目和服务菜单162。用美元符号标记的是可以购买的。免费的条目可以马上访问。这里可以提示观众电影发行的简单程序。当观众选择需要付费的特殊服务或条目时，购买程序展开。如图14C所示，观众被提示通过远地键盘或者其他菜单键入口令/访问代码。例如，观众在遥控设备上刷信用卡。如果口令/访问代码通过，则观众还有最后的机会决定是否购买并且/或者确认或返回前面的条目菜单(参见图14D)。当观众确认其购买行为或者指令后，就会显示出收据170(图14E)。观众可以选择返回前面的条目菜单，或者返回节目指南。
图15A-15C示出了本发明的另一实施例，其中电视观众可以接收进来的电子邮件或者向连接在电视节目预告系统上的其他电视观众或用户，例如国际互联网上的用户发送邮件。如图15A所示，观众在Mode菜单内翻卷至邮件窗口并且激活该窗口进入子模式菜单。为了读取进入的邮件，观众翻卷至“检查新邮件”单元并激活该单元以显示收到的邮件。邮件模式将进来的邮件按照接收日期排序并列出清单(参见图15B)。如图15C所示，观众随后可以翻卷至某一邮件。为了发送电子邮件，观众翻卷至“创建邮件”单元并激活该单元以打开空白窗口。利用输入设备、输入设备上的语音识别装置输入文本可以创建邮件。
图16A-16C示出了利用本发明的交互式电视节目预告系统访问国际互联网上各种其他服务的方法。如上所述，国际互联网上的数据库可以通过电话线、有线调制解调器或其他通信装置访问。如图16A所示，用户翻卷至服务模式并点击该模式以获取包括各种不同的子模式，例如新闻、天气和体育服务、电视节目指南上节目的预览和评论、大型商场的购物信息和服务信息以及国际互联网或万维网上的其他产品或服务。如图16C所示，用户已经选择了新闻、天气和体育，打开了涉及各种特殊服务的另一个子菜单，例如新闻摘要、全国和本地天气、体育赛事、财经动态、音像、卡通和/或与天气、新闻和体育有关的其他服务。这些服务可以由连接在电视系统上的特殊数据库或者在线信息提供商(例如America OnLine、Prodigy等)提供，或者利用搜索引擎在国际互联网或万维网上的网络服务器或数据库内搜索。如图所示，用户选择了打开另一菜单的新闻摘要，该菜单向观众提供各种可以访问的新闻报道。用户可以浏览、打印或下载新闻报道到附在电视系统上的计算机系统内(例如PCTV)。
图17A-17F示出了将有关条目和服务根据上下文链接到节目指南102特定节目上的典型系统和方法。如图17A所示，观众在指南102中选择特定的节目以访问节目的info菜单。在info菜单中，观众翻卷链接的服务并且单击该窗口以移动至包含涉及特定节目的条目和服务的数据库。在所示实例中，观众正在收看Washinton与Minnesota Vikings的比赛。观众转移到提供一系列与比赛有关的商品购买和服务选项的窗口，例如Washinton Redskins或Minnesota Vikings的标志、其他NFL队的标志(在NFL运动专卖店)，或者转移到其他队的比赛。观众也可以定购指南上正在播放的节目的磁带/录像带。图17C-17F示出了观众选择购买Washinton Redskin帽子的情况。观众输入口令或者其他输入识别符供系统确认。观众也可以简单地将信用卡插入遥控设备或其他识别卡以购买Redskins的帽子。定购得到了确认并且帽子送到了观众家里。
虽然上面对本发明作了描述，但是本发明的精神和实质由后面所附权利要求限定。

Claims (69)

1.一种带电视节目预告信息的电视节目预告系统，其特征在于包括：
接收数据的数据输入；
存储计算机程序、与观众和所述接收数据有关的信息的存储器，所述信息与观众有关并由计算机观众输入，所述数据包括所述电视节目预告信息；
与所述存储器耦合的处理器，所述处理器能够利用所述计算机程序将所述电视节目预告信息组织为所需的格式；接收用户选择的用户输入；以及以所需格式显示所述电视节目预告信息的显示器。
2.如权利要求1所述的带电视节目预告信息的电视节目预告系统，其特征在于进一步包括向电视系统发送有关信息的电视节目的计算机附件。
3.如权利要求1所述的带电视节目预告信息的电视节目预告系统，其特征在于所述计算机附件包括：
处理器；
与处理器耦合的时钟，所述时钟保存当前时间；
与所述处理器耦合的电池，所述电池提供电源；
与所述处理器耦合的存储器，所述存储器存储选择电视节目所需的按键参数；以及
与所述处理器耦合的发射机，其中所述处理器采用所述时钟和所述存储器提供所述发射机发射用信息以控制所述电视系统。
4.如权利要求1所述的带电视节目预告信息的电视节目预告系统，其特征在于采用录像设备连接器自动调谐和自动录像选定的节目，所述录像设备连接器包括接收与选定电视节目有关的信息的接收机。
5.一种带电视节目预告信息的电视节目预告系统，其特征在于包括：
包含显示器的观众接口；以及
远离所述观众接口的计算机附件，包括：
接收数据的数据输入；
存储计算机程序和所述接收数据的存储器，所述数据包括所述电视节目预告信息；
与所述存储器耦合的处理器，所述处理器能够利用所述计算机程序将所述电视节目预告信息组织为所需的格式；
其中所述计算机附件向所述观众接口以所述所需格式发送所述电视节目预告信息。
6.一种向计算机系统提供电视节目信息的方法，其特征在于包括以下步骤：
接收数据，所述数据包括电视节目预告信息和与计算机用户有关的信息；
在存储器内存储所述数据，所述存储器与所述计算机系统耦合；
将所述电视节目预告信息组织为所需的格式，所述所需格式由计算机用户确定；以及
在所述计算机系统内的显示器上显示所述经过组织的电视节目预告信息。
7.如权利要求6所述向计算机系统提供电视节目预告信息的方法，其特征在于所述数据至少从卫星发射和陆基线路连接二者之一处接收。
8.如权利要求7所述向计算机系统提供电视节目预告信息的方法，其特征在于所述陆基线路连接提供了网络访问，并且所述数据从网络接收。
9.如权利要求8所述向计算机系统提供电视节目预告信息的方法，其特征在于所述网络访问提供了与国际互联网的连接。
10.如权利要求5所述向计算机系统提供电视节目预告信息的方法，其特征在于计算机程序组织所述的电视节目预告信息，所述计算机程序存储在所述存储器内。
11.如权利要求5所述向计算机系统提供电视节目预告信息的方法，其特征在于进一步包括用所述计算机系统控制电视系统调谐器的步骤。
12.如权利要求11所述向计算机系统提供电视节目预告信息的方法，其特征在于所述控制步骤包括编程VCR以录像所述计算机系统选定的节目。
13.如权利要求5所述向计算机系统提供电视节目预告信息的方法，其特征在于进一步包括控制所述计算机系统内部的电视/视频卡以在所述计算机显示器上显示选定的电视节目，所述选定的电视节目从所述计算机显示器上以所述所需格式显示的所述电视节目预告信息中选择。
14.如权利要求5所述向计算机系统提供电视节目预告信息的方法，其特征在于进一步包括在所述存储器内自动存储选定的电视节目的步骤，所述选定电视节目在所述计算机显示器上以所述所需格式显示并从所述电视节目预告信息中选择。
15.一种在录像机上录像选定节目的方法，其特征在于包括以下步骤：
在观众接口处安装预告节目和控制系统；
将预告信息输入所述观众接口以用于所述预告节目；
选择在所述录像机上录像的节目，所述选择由所述观众接口完成；以及
用所述控制系统向所述录像机发送所述预告信息片段以录像所述选定的节目。
16.如权利要求15所述的在录像机上录像选定节目的方法，其特征在于所述输入由通过国际互联网接收所述预告信息的调制解调器完成。
17.如权利要求15所述的在录像机上录像选定节目的方法，其特征在于所述发射步骤包括：
从个人电脑向电视系统控制器发射第一信号；
存储所述电视系统控制器中视频控制用信息；以及
从所述电视系统控制器向所述录像机发射几个信号以控制所述录像机。
18.如权利要求15所述的在录像机上录像选定节目的方法，其特征在于所述安装步骤包含以下步骤：
在所述个人计算机内安装第一发射机；
在所述录像机处安装接收机；以及
其中所述发射步骤包括直接或间接向所述录像机发射信号。
19.一种电视节目预告系统，其特征在于包括：
带显示器的观众接口，用来显示电视节目预告信息；以及
有线系统，具有从计算机网络接收数据的第一数据线路和带有接收、组织和在电视节目指南中显示接收数据的软件的存储器，该有线系统包括与观众接口耦合的第二数据线路用来在显示器上显示电视节目指南。
20.如权利要求19所述的电视节目预告系统，其特征在于数据线路为有线调制解调器。
21.如权利要求19所述的电视节目预告系统，其特征在于观众接口为包括电视机和用户输入设备的电视系统。
22.如权利要求19所述的电视节目预告系统，其特征在于用户接口为与处理器和存储器耦合的计算机监视器。
23.如权利要求19所述的电视节目预告系统，其特征在于存储器包含接收一段时间内的电视节目预告信息并将电视节目预告信息组织为所需格式向观众显示的软件。
24.如权利要求19所述的电视节目预告系统，其特征在于有线调制解调器提供了对网络上服务器的访问从而使观众可以交互访问服务器上的文件。
25.如权利要求24所述的电视节目预告系统，其特征在于存储器包含访问国际互联网服务器的万维网兼容软件。
26.一种与电视节目预告信息一起使用的上下文链接系统，其特征在于包括：
具有向观众显示电视节目预告信息的显示器的用户接口；
与显示器耦合的数据线路，用来与计算机网络通信；以及
包含用来从计算机网络检索链接数据的软件的存储器，链接数据根据上下文与电视节目预告信息中的电视节目相关。
27.如权利要求26所述的链接系统，其特征在于进一步包含用来在计算机网络内搜索所述链接数据的软件。
28.如权利要求26所述的链接系统，其特征在于数据线路选自电话线、有线调制解调器、共轴电缆和光纤。
29.如权利要求26所述的链接系统，其特征在于电视节目预告信息位于存储器内部。
30.如权利要求26所述的链接系统，其特征在于电视节目预告信息位于计算机网络上的数据库内，存储器包含用来检索电视节目预告信息并组织为所需格式的软件。
31.如权利要求26所述的链接系统，其特征在于存储器包括用来在根据上下文与电视节目预告信息中的电视节目相关的计算机网络内搜索和选择信息的软件。
32.如权利要求26所述的链接系统，其特征在于存储器存储由观众选择的节目。
33.如权利要求26所述的链接系统，其特征在于进一步包括包含电视节目预告中每个节目的数据库，数据库包括多个判定准则，每个节目都与一个或多个判定准则相关。
34.如权利要求33所述的链接系统，其特征在于存储器包含软件，用来对每个选定节目指定一个或多个判定准则并且搜索计算机网络上的数据库以确定包含指定的判定准则的其它节目。
35.如权利要求34所述的链接系统，其特征在于进一步包含自动搜索数据库以找到符合指定判定条件的节目的处理器。
36.如权利要求26所述的链接系统，其特征在于存储器包含访问国际互联网服务器的万维网兼容软件。
37.如权利要求34所述的链接系统，其特征在于链接数据包括根据上下文相关的商品和服务，存储器包括使观众购买根据上下文相关的商品和服务的软件。
38.一种向电视系统提供电视信息链接的方法，其特征在于包括：
在观众接口上显示电视节目信息；
输入用户对电视节目预告信息中电视节目的选择；
从计算机网络接收根据上下文与电视节目相关的链接数据；以及
在观众接口上显示所述链接数据。
39.如权利要求38所述的方法，其特征在于进一步包括搜索计算机网络以找到与电视节目预告信息内的电视节目有上下文关联的链接数据。
40.如权利要求39所述的方法，其特征在于进一步包括从计算机网络上的数据库检索电视节目预告信息并在观众接口上将电视节目信息组织为所需的格式。
41.如权利要求40所述的方法，其特征在于存储器存储由观众选定的节目。
42.如权利要求37所述的方法，其特征在于进一步包括：
在数据库内存储多个判定准则；以及
将电视节目预告信息内的每个电视节目与电视节目预告信息关联。
43.如权利要求42所述的方法，其特征在于进一步包括对选定的节目指定其中一个判定准则并搜索计算机网络上的数据库以确定符合指定判定准则的其它节目。
44.如权利要求43所述的方法，其特征在于利用自动搜寻数据库内符合指定判定准则的节目的处理器来执行搜索步骤。
45.一种电视节目预告信息用的电视节目预告系统，其特征在于包括：
包含显示电视节目预告信息的显示器的直观接口；
将直观接口与网络上的计算机链接起来的通信设备；
从计算机接收电视节目预告信息的数据输入；
包含根据用户选择搜索和检索电视节目预告信息的软件的存储器；以及
与输入用户选择的存储器耦合的用户输入。
46.如权利要求45所述的电视节目预告系统，其特征在于存储器包括访问国际互联网文件服务器的万维网兼容软件。
47.如权利要求46所述的电视节目预告系统，其特征在于国际互联网文件服务器包括包含电视节目预告信息的文件，存储器包括从文件中搜索和检索电视节目预告信息并组织电视节目预告信息的软件。
48.如权利要求46所述的电视节目预告系统，其特征在于国际互联网文件服务器包括包含电视节目预告信息的文件，存储器包括将文件下载到直观接口中的软件。
49.如权利要求47所述的电视节目预告系统，其特征在于存储器包括使观众浏览网格内单元以收看不同节目的软件。
50.如权利要求47所述的电视节目预告系统，其特征在于存储器包括使观众从观众接口发送和接收电子邮件的软件。
51.一种电视节目预告系统，其特征在于包含：
一个或多个服务器，每个包含存储计算机程序和电视节目预告信息的存储器和与存储器耦合的处理器，所述处理器能够利用所述计算机程序将所述电视节目预告信息组织为所需的格式；以及
将服务器与网络耦合的数据线路。
52.如权利要求51所述的系统，其特征在于服务器为具有唯一地址的网络文件服务器。
53.如权利要求52所述的系统，其特征在于网络文件服务器包括超文本传输协议服务器软件以允许每个服务器被用作国际互联网服务器，并且存储器包括可以访问文件服务器的万维网兼容软件。
54.如权利要求51所述的系统，其特征在于电视节目信息被组织为包含多个单元的网格，每个单元包含电视节目，网格进一步包括带时间的第一栏和带电视频道的第二垂直栏。

与观众接口耦合的存储器，它包含用来检索所述电视节目预告信息并将所述信息组织为显示器上所需格式的软件。
63.如权利要求62所述的系统，其特征在于数据库与计算机网络耦合并且通信设备包括与计算机网络耦合的数据线路用来将观众接口与数据库链接起来。
