Process for the production of a metal-containing azo dye. It has been found that a new, valuable, metal-containing azo dye is obtained by using the monoazo dye of the formula
EMI0001.0005
3 lets the chromium-releasing agent act in this way; 1 that a chromium-containing azo dye is produced, 3 that contains two monoazo dye molecules bound to a chromium atom in a complex.
The new dye forms a water-soluble powder that dyes wool from weakly alkaline, neutral or acetic acid baths in pure, red-blue, washable and lightfast shades.
The monoazo dye used as the starting material and corresponding to the above formula can be prepared by coupling the 8-methoxy-1-oxynaphthalene-1-sulfonic acid amide using methods known per se, for example by means of 'hydrochloric acid and sodium nitrite dianotized 3; 4,6-' Trichloro-2-amino-1-oxyben- zene can be produced.
The treatment with the chromium-releasing agents takes place, as already mentioned, in such a way that a chromium-containing dye is created which contains two monoazo dye molecules bound to one atom of chromium in a complex. Accordingly, the chromium plating is expediently carried out with such chromium-releasing agents and by such methods which, experience has shown, provide complex chromium inhibitions of this composition.
It is generally recommended to use less than one, but at least half an atom of chromium on a molecule of a dye and / or to carry out the chromation in a weakly acidic to alkaline medium. Accordingly, those chromium compounds that are stable in an alkaline medium are particularly well suited for carrying out the process, such as those chromium compounds of aliphatic oxycarboxylic acids or, preferably, aromatic o-oxyarboxylic acids which contain the chromium in complex bonds.
The metallization takes place with advantage in the heat, open or under pressure, for example at the boiling temperature of the reaction mixture, if necessary in the presence of suitable additives, for example in the presence of 'salts organic seher' acids, bases, organic solvents or other means promoting complex formation. example:
21.3 parts 3,4,6 = T'i-chloro-2-amino-1-oxybenzene are added in the customary manner in the presence of 16 parts 30% hydrochloric acid dianotized with 7 parts of sodium nitrite. The obtained suspension of the diazo compound -will -below. Good stirring to a solution cooled to 1d of 27 parts of 1-oxy-8-methoxynaphthalene-4-sulfonic acid amide, 1'2 'parts of sodium hydroxide and 60 parts of pyridine in 200 parts of water.
After coupling is complete, the reaction mixture is diluted with 600 parts of water and, after adding 23 parts of 30% hydrochloric acid, the resulting dye is filtered off and washed with water.
When dried, the dye is a dark-colored substance which dissolves in dilute sodium hydroxide solution with brownish-red color and in concentrated sulfuric acid with blue color and dyes wool from acetic acid bath in violet-brown shades.
This dye is converted into the complex chromium compound, advantageously without prior drying. For this purpose, the dye paste obtained according to the above is stirred with 700 parts of hot water.
After adding 1'2 parts of sodium hydroxide and 100 'parts of a solution of chromsalicylic acid potassium sodium with a chromium content of 2; 6%, the reaction mixture is refluxed for 5 hours. The chromium compound formed is filtered off after cooling to room temperature, washed with about 300 parts of cold water and dried.
The 1-oxy-8-methoxy-naphthalene-4-sulfonic acid amide can be prepared, for example, as follows: 1-Acetylamino-8-oxynaphthalene-4-sulfonic acid is treated with dimethylsidate and the 1-acetyl-amino- 8-methoxy-naphthalene-4-sulfonic acid saponified at the boil with dilute sodium hydroxide solution.
The 1-amino = 8-methoxy-naphthalene-4-sulfonic acid is converted into the 1-oxy-B-methoxy-naphthalene, -4-sidfonsäitre in a manner known per se using sodium bisulfite solution.
After the esterification of the -oxy group with p-toluenesulfonyl chloride, the sodium salt of sulfonic acid is converted into the corresponding sulfo by treatment with phosphorus chlorides. Chloride and this converted into the sulfonic acid amide by means of concentrated ammonia solution.
After the saponification of the p-toluenesulfonic acid ester by boiling with dilute sodium hydroxide solution, the 1-oxy. & - = methoxy-naphthalene-4-siüfonsäure- amid with a melting point of 247 (uncorrupted).
