Additional patent to main patent no. 297020. Process for the production of an azo pigment. It has been found that a valuable azo pigment is obtained if a halide of the azo group-containing carboxylic acid of the formula is used in a molecular ratio of 2: 1
EMI0001.0008
condensed with 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl.
The new pigment forms a dark powder that is very slightly soluble in the usual organic solvents and plastics; z. B. polyvinyl chloride, in pure purple tones NEN of very good migration fastness colors.
As acid halides of the above composition come z. B. the acid bromide and especially the acid chloride in question. These halides can be conveniently prepared by treating the carboxylic acid of the formula given above with acid-halogenating agents such as phosphorus halides or phosphorus oxyhalides. The acid chloride can, for.
B. by means of phosphorus pentachloride or particularly advantageously by means of thionyl chloride. The treatment with the acid halogenating agents is expediently carried out in an inert organic solvent such as mono- or a dichloro-benzene, toluene, xylene, benzene or nitrobenzene.
The condensation of the acid halide with the diamine is also advantageously carried out in one of the organic solvents mentioned, and it is recommended that this reaction be carried out at elevated temperature in the presence of an acid-binding agent such as. B. ammonia or pyridine. The acid chlorides to be used as starting materials can be separated from the reaction mixture in which they were prepared as indicated and optionally recrystallized.
If necessary, especially if thionyl chloride was used to prepare the acid halide, it is possible to dispense with a separation and to carry out the condensation immediately after the preparation of the acid halide. The relative amount of the reactants should be chosen so that two molecules of the carboxylic acid halide react with one molecule of the diamine. To carry out the reaction in practice, it is advisable to use a small excess of the first-mentioned component over the theoretically required amount.
Example: 23.4 parts of the azo dye from diazotized 1-amino-2-methyl-5-chlorobenzene and 2-oxyanthracene-3-carboxylic acid are heated to 130 in 180 parts of chlorobenzene and 10 parts of thionyl chloride for one hour . To the clear solution, a warm solution of 5.52 parts of 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl in 30 parts of chlorobenzene and 5 parts of anhydrous pyridine is poured in thin streams and the temperature is kept at 120 to 130 for 15 hours.
It is filtered, washed. the pigment with hot chlorobenzene and dry it in the vacuum at 90.
