Accounting machine comprising totalizers. The object of the present invention is an accounting machine comprising totalsseum and a paper carrier which can occupy several positions corresponding to different: columns.
This machine is characterized in that one of these totalizers is a totalizer-recorder arranged so that a unit is registered there when it is engaged with a corresponding control member, the operation of this member. being controlled by the entry of the totalizer into engagement with this control member.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, a form of execution of the machine which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the part of this machine necessary for understanding the invention; fig. 2 is a back elevation of some parts shown in FIG. 1. The machine partially shown in the drawing is, for example, of the type of that which has been described and shown in: Swiss patent no. 173800 of December 29, 1932.
As shown in fig. 1, four totalisers 1 are mounted on the same vertical line at the rear of the machine. These, totalisers. are designated by the letters.
.reference A, B, C and D. They can be actuated by control members consisting of two racks mounted to slide in fixed blocks. 3.
A control lever 4 -is articulated on a fixed rod 5 and carries a button 6 which normally rests on a lever 7 articulated at. 5 and that a spring 8 tends to tilt in its own from the movement of the needles of a watch.
An angled lever 9 is also articulated at 5 and subjected to the action of a spring 10. Which tends to make it turn in the opposite direction of movement 'es needles, of a watch in relation to the lever 7. Lc Relative movement between lever 7 and angled lever 9 is limited by a button 11 mounted in a large notch made in the right end of lever 7. During normal machine operation.
the control lever 4 moves in the direction of needle movement. of a watch around its pivot. 5, which allows the spring 8 to drive the lever 7 with it. After a small movement of the lever 7, the latter drives the angled lever 9, which has the effect of lowering the rack 2, articulated on this lever, by means of the head button 12. The parts 7, 9 and 2 are then move to a distance corresponding to the operation of the keyboard and. at the end of this movement, the lever 7 stops, the control lever 4 continuing until the end of its regular stroke.
We can imagine that there is a distinct game. of pieces 7, 9 and 2 for each row of digits. This movement therefore allows the racks of the different decimal ranks to lower in a differential manner.
When the control lever 4 reaches the position corresponding to its complete movement, the selected totalizer engages with the racks 2 to be actuated. Subsequently, a return movement of the control lever 4 turns the lever 7 in the opposite direction to the movement. clockwise and raises the racks 2 to their initial position, as shown in the figure. This return movement causes the recording of the appropriate sum in the totalizer.
If, during the rotation of the totalizer wheels, one of them turns from 9 to 0, this movement activates an appropriate transfer mechanism to allow the rack 2 of the immediately higher row to move up an additional step. under the action of the spring 10. This additional step allows. the rack to climb up. a position in which a shoulder 13 of its lower end abuts against the fixed lower block 3. When the movements of the block are completed, the totalizer is brought back and taken out of engagement with the racks.
During the next operation, a plate 14 articulated at 15 and carrying a rod 17 extending along the lower edge of the plate, rotates around its pivot in the direction of clockwise movement. A link 18 carries a vertical projection 19 and it is suspended by its rear end from an arm 20 fixed to one end of a shaft 21. Another arm (not shown) similar to the 20 arm. is fixed to the other end of the shaft 21. A rod 22 is fixed by its ends to the two arms so as to back down with them.
A spring 22a tends to move the rod 2 towards the rear of the machine.
The rotation of the plate 1.4 in the direction of clockwise movement, as has just been said. brings the rod 17 into contact with the projection 19 and moves the rod 18 forward. This tilts the rod 22 towards the front of the. machine and turn, in the direction of movement. needles of a watch, any one of a series of driven levers 23 which had been brought to the transfer position during the previous operation. This dextrorsuin movement of the bent levers \? 3 returns the transfer mechanism to its initial position, in which it is again ready to operate during the laying of a sum.
All of the above movements are described in detail in the patent cited above.
A movable paper carriage, also described in the patent cited above, is mounted so as to move transversely in the machine. This carriage carries a strip 25 articulated on the carriage by means of two rods 26 mounted at opposite ends of the carriage and only one of which is shown in the drawing. A tab 27 is attached to the strip 25 and extends a small distance below the bottom edge of the. bandaged. The tab 27 has two on faces 28 forming a cam :, one on each side.
An angled swing lever 29 is. articulated on the shaft 30 said totalizer _-l. called thereafter totals nr-recorder, and carries a hook 31 articulated in 31n to. its upper end. A spring 32 maintains the posterior end of the hook in its upper position. A bracket 33 is fixed to the frame of the machine by means of screws 34 and it has a slot in which the hook 31 engages to prevent any lateral play of the latter. The upper end of the slot limits the upward movement of the hook under the action of the tension spring 32.
The posterior end of the hook is normally located behind the lower edge of the tab 27, as shown in fig. 1. The lower arm of the elbow lever 29 extends in front of the machine and engages in a slot made in a button 35 fixed to the frame of the machine. The front end of this arm has a round shoulder 36 which is located above a finger 37 arranged at the upper end of a slider 38. A weak spring 39 is fixed to the slider and to a fixed part. of the machine.
A spring 40 is attached to the anterior arm of the crank lever 29 and to a frozen part of the machine, and it tends to rotate the crank lever around its pivot 30 in a counterclockwise direction.
The machine also comprises an additional angled lever 23 mounted below the row of units and cooperating with the slide 38 by allowing the rack 2 of the row of units to rise by one step. The lower end of this bent lever has a lateral shoulder 41 in engagement with a vertical part of the slider 38. A spring 42 tends to turn the bent lever 23 in the counterclockwise direction.
Thanks to. these parts, when the carriage reaches a position corresponding to a column and in which the tab 27 is in the extension of the hook 31, if the totalizer-recorder A engages, the tab 27 prevents the hook 31 and the upper arm of the angled lever 29 to move forward, causing the shoulder 36 to move up and forward a small distance overcoming the tension of the spring 40 and rotating around the serving point 31a pivot.
This distance is sufficient to cause the slider 38 to rise until the shoulder 41 meets an inclined edge 43 of the slider 38, after which the tension of the res exits 10 causes the elbow lever 23 to rotate counterclockwise. 'a watch by acting on the rack 2, so that the latter presses @from the bottom up on an offset shoulder 44 of this elbow lever, and it lifts the rack 2, overcoming the tension of the spring 39, to place a unit in the totalizer-recorder A.
It will be understood that during the operations which involve the use of the totalizer-recorder A, the sums keys are not lowered. However, if it is desired to use this totalizer for an ordinary addition operation, provision must be made to prevent the installation of this unit. A disabling mechanism is used for this purpose.
This mechanism -is constituted by a vertical arm 45 carried by the strip 25 and comprising a finger 46 engaging in the vertical plane of a click 47 articulated at 48 and a spring 49 tends to rotate in the opposite direction. clockwise movement. When it is desired to use the totalizer-eurogister A for a simple addition operation, it suffices to move the arm 45 backwards so that the finger 46 passes from one to the other! notches in the click die 47.
This has the effect of moving the lug 27 sufficiently forwards @of the machine so that, when the totalizer-recorder A is engaged, the bent lever 29 can be released as a block forward in the machine without this movement. is accompanied by the lifting of the shoulder 36. During this movement, the spring 40 retains the bent lever and prevents it from rotating.
Likewise, the unit laying mechanism will not work to place the unit, unless the carriage is in its position corresponding to the desired column, because if the tab 27 is not in the extension of the hook 31, the input of the totalizer-recorder A will simply slide the elbow lever 29 forward into the machine.
Parts 2, 23, 38, etc. are returned to their normal position, during the subsequent operation -de the machine, by the displacement of the rod 22 forward, as mentioned above. It will be appreciated that the leg 27 may be wide enough to extend transversely past any number of column positions, or, if desired, there may also be several legs? " 7 attached to the band \? 5.
As the totalizer-recorder A remains cry caught between machine operations. while the carriage moves from position to position. the other, it is necessary that the tab 27 comprises parts 28 in the form of cams, and due the hook 31 to be articulated on the elbow lever 29, to prevent any damage to the parts if the operator allowed the carriage to move. bring the tab 27 .in the extension of the hook 31 after an operation in which the totalizer-recorder A is engaged.
In this case. tab 27 would simply lower the rear end of hook 31. Subsequent disengagement of the totalizer-recorder A would naturally return the crank lever 29 and the hook 31 to. their normal position shown in fig. 1.
Functioniozzrae-rnen.t. One of the uses to which the machine shown and described lends itself may consist in ensuring the automatic consecutive printing of numbers on forms such as statements of consumption of lighting current, checks. tax notes, ete. For this operation, the form is entered into the machine and the appropriate sums are entered there. After printing the last of these sum, the machine automatically switches to. the. next tab position, where the tab? 7 is placed in the extension of hook 31.
In this position, the machine automatically selects the totalizer-recorder A and performs a cycle of operations. As the totalizer-recorder A is engaged during this cycle, this a. the effect of - ,, adding a unit, as explained above.
When this cycle is completed, the carriage automatically returns to its. extreme right position, after which it cycles automatically again. During this cycle, the totalizer-recorder A is selected, and it engages for a subtotal. Establishing the subtotal causes the desired consecutive number to be printed on the form, which is then removed from the machine. We can naturally imagine that these forms each bear only one horizontal line of inscription.
We can also imagine due, if the machine works automatically: to introduce the unit into the totalizer-recorder A, the operation can be accompanied by a lowering of the non-printing member, so that no Zero or other sign need not appear in this column of the printed form.
The various controls of these automatic features such as automatic shutdown of the motor circuit. the. non-printing. the. selection of the totalizer, setting of the subtotal. the. totalizing and recalling of the carriage can be effected by the transverse movement of the carriage as described in detail in the patent cited above.
