Typographic machine equipped with a measuring mechanism. The present invention relates to a letterpress machine provided with a measuring mechanism, in which means for marking a recording tape and a line measuring mechanism are both operated by keys.
The resulting recording tapes can be used to control the operations of individual typesetting and melt type machines, or photomechanical letterpress typesetting machines.
In these two types of machines intended to be controlled by these recording tapes, the characters or other typographical symbols which must be cast or reproduced are grouped according to their width or their unit value. Accordingly, the marks in the recording tape do not only serve to bring the selected die to the type mold, or the selected typeface to the front of a lens, as appropriate, but also to determine the d-value. 'units, width or space to assign to that character or symbol.
In recording tape composing machines heretofore known in the trade, the two functions mentioned above are linked together, so that these mnaehines can only produce marks to determine a certain position of a character in its own group of units value, and measure and record the units value or width assigned to that group.
It often happens that the desired characters cannot be accommodated among those of the same value of units in a matrix slot of a fused type machine, or on the main plate of a photomechanical eoinposing machine, but places can be found for these characters among those with a different units value or width.
Such an arrangement cannot be used in known machines, by the fact. that a conventional composing machine for tapes with registrars does not include means for supplying the casting machine with the additional signals necessary for the "movement of the mechanism determining the dimensions of the mold or, for photomechanical composing machines, the additional movement necessary for the projection of a character onto the appropriate position of the negative or receiving environment.
As the functions of measuring the value of units and key position are. tied together, these machines cannot measure and record the true value to be assigned to these displaced characters, nor record these measurements to produce the appropriate rationale for the line (the composition.
The object of the invention is to provide a machine by which the actual unit value and not the place or group value of a character or symbol is measured and recorded for the purpose of measuring the line and rationale, marks being produced on the recording tape so that characters or symbols arranged out of place in the matrix or on the main board, as the case may be, may be cast or photographed with their own value of units or width.
The machine according to the invention is characterized in that the measuring mechanism comprises a movable block whose position is controlled by keys selected to increase at will the width assigned to a character by the measuring mechanism of the line.
The typographic machine described below comprises parts of known type and similar to those described in Swiss Patents Nos. 47791, 48103, 48104 and 48364 (1908). It is therefore sufficient, in the description which follows, to describe the new mechanisms.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the typographic machine which is the subject of the invention.
Figs. 1 and 2 are vutes in elevation of this embodiment for two different operating positions.
Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6 are detailed views.
Fig. 7 is a partial view similar to FIG. 1, some parts being shown in a different position.
The embodiment shown in the drawing comprises the following known parts: a unit wheel d which is constantly urged to rotate by a rack coupled with a pneumatic motor, not shown; a retaining pawl being intended to cooperate with the unit wheel A; a rack C for measuring the line, which meshes with a pin a integral with the unit wheel A and which carries an index c; a fixed scale D; a unit measuring unit E, and a series of unit stops F intended to be controlled by the keys of the machine which condition the tape.
A frame G is pivotally mounted on the axis a1 of the unit wheel A1, the frame having an arm G1 on which is. pivotally mounted a stopper lock H. A block I is mounted in a support, so that it can slide along the stop bolt H, and includes stepped steps I1, I2, I3 (fig. 3) , this block with degrees being intended to be actuated in a variable and selective manner by keys of the machine, so that one or the other of the degrees comes in the trajectory of the stop lock H.
The retaining pawl is formed of an arm B capable of pivoting at b and of a block B2 having teeth B1. This block B2 is slidably mounted in a bearing G2 carried by an arm G3 of the frame G and is capable of moving in a slot at the outer end of the arm G3.
In a first position, the teeth B1 of the block B2 are kept engaged with the teeth of the unit wheel A by the arm B, under the action of a spring B5, one side of the block B2 resting against a shoulder B4 on said arm (fig. 2). When the teeth B1 are pushed so as to make them mesh with the teeth of the unit wheel, there is tension of a spring B3, the upper end of which is fixed to the arm G3 of the frame G, and the lower end to block B2.
When a character key on the keyboard is pressed, the units rack E is lifted up and meshes with the units wheel -1, then the arm B is. raised, allowing the spring.
B3 to lift block B2, the teeth of which release the unit wheel, which now turns. counterclockwise under the influence of. rack driven by the motor and communicating. a movement to the line measuring rack C until the unit rack E meets that of the r series unit stops which a. been lifted (fig. 2).
The arm B is. then returned by the spring Bj, and the teeth B1 again engage with the unit wheel _1, then the unit rack E is released from the. unit wheel and. returns to its initial position under the influence of a spring El. The operation described above is. normal operation of the measuring mechanism.
Determining the additional width to. - adding to each character is determined chronologically to be done without interfering with the movements of the normal measuring mechanism. When the arm B has been released from the unit wheel d, as described above, the frame C, under the influence of a spring K, turns clockwise, and the lock stop II is raised until it meets one of the wills II, I2, I3 on block 1, which has been placed in its path by the key of the particular character actuated.
This movement of the frame G carries the toothed block B1, B2 away from the shoulder B l said lever B, in the position shown in fig. 2. The distance x between the shoulder B4 and the block B1, B2 (fig. 2) depends on the distance to be added to the width of the character, determined by the position of the stop latch II against the block I. When the character key is released, teeth B1 re-engage unit wheel A under the pressure of arm B, which overcomes the action of spring B3, and unit rack F is disengaged from unit wheel. units. This then turns in seals counterclockwise under the action of the rack driven by the motor, and drives with it the frame C and the block B1, B2, until a end of block B1 abuts against shoulder B4 of arm B.
The line measuring rack C is thus moved by the unit wheel by an additional distance determined by the block I, this distance being added to the distance defined by the normal stop F selected for measuring units.
The position of the adjustable block I is selectively determined by the action of a key assigned to each character whose unit value, that is to say the width, can be increased and measured.
The movable block I comprises three degrees Il, l2 ', I3, which makes it possible to add one, two or three units to the value of units of any character determined by the stopping of units F for that particular width of the character.
The selective and variable movements of the movable block I are controlled by pistons J, J2, J4 (flg. 3 to 6) of a cylinder J1. When air is admitted into cylinder J 1 through port j, piston J moves until the rear end of a slot J3 in the piston meets a pin J11 fixed in the cylinder wall, and this movement pushes the pistons J2 and J4 by an equal distance, so as to place one of the degrees of the movable block I on the path of the stop latch H to ensure the addition of one unit to the value of units d 'one character (fig. 4).
Likewise, when air is admitted into cylinder J1 through a port j1, piston J2 is moved, driving piston J4, until piston J2 is stopped by a pin J5 located in the wall of the cylinder. cylinder and engaging the rear end of a slot J6 of piston J2 (fig. 5). By this movement, a second degree of block I is placed on the path of the lock H to ensure the addition of two units to the width of the character.
When .air is. admitted into the cylinder Jl by a light j2, the piston J4 moves alone until its front end engages with the front end of the cylinder Jl (fig. 6), and this movement brings about a third degree of block I on the path of the stop lock H, to ensure the addition of three units to the. character width.
The three pistons J, .12, J4 are actuated against the action of a Jlo spring which returns the pistons to their initial positions when the air evenly pressure escapes from the cylinder.
The movable block I is connected to the piston J4 by means of an arm J7 capable of pivoting at one of its ends on an extension J g of said piston. This assembly allows free movement of a limited value between the udder and the I block. The J7 arm ends with another J9 arm which rests against the outer wall of the Jl cylinder to avoid the fall of the arm J7.
Each light j, j1, j2 is connected by an air duct to an air control valve which is actuated by the character key which controls the particular punches provided for the intended character, and this key also actuates a punch additional, or in a variation of the additional punches, to produce additional marks in a second ribbon, to ensure the addition of additional units to the character in a molten type machine or a photomechanical composing machine , depending on the case.
Suppose, by way of example, that a character with a units value of 14 cannot fit in the 14-unit row of the die of a fused-type dialing machine, or in the row with 14 units of the main plate of a photomechanical machine, and that said character be placed in a row of eleven units. The mechanism provided between the key of this character and the punches is arranged so as to produce the necessary marks in the recording tape, by known methods. The operation of this key controls the punches for an eleven units character, and the eleven units stop of the F series (fig. 2) is lifted.
But the key also determines the position of the movable block I, so as to present the stop of three units on the path of the stop latch H. Consequently, after the measurement of eleven units has been determined by the stop units F and the line rack has advanced to measure this value, frame C rotates unit wheel A, as seen, until lock H meets the stop of three units of block I, and the line rack will thus have added three more units to the line measurement.
In order to avoid accidental contact between the movable block I and the stop bolt H, sufficient space is provided between them, and this space is used to partially determine the normal measure of each character, a measure which heretofore has been entirely determined by stopping F units. When operating a key for a character to which no additional units should , be added, the block I remains in its original position and the stop latch H is raised until a shoulder Hl (the this latch engages with the front end of the block I.
Thus, when the unit rack E has finished its measuring run against one of the unit stops F and the arm B has again engaged with the unit wheel A, the latter turns and advances the unit. create a measurement mesh for the distance line representing a unit. So that this unit is not added to the normal width of the character envisaged, the support for the unit stops F is moved, to the left of its usual position, by a distance representing one unit. If, for example, the character envisioned is five units and no units are to be added to that character, then the units rack measures four units and the stop latch H conditions the units wheel A to add the remaining unit.
The keys of the composing machine which determine the operation of the measuring mechanism are determined by the cast iron or the particular arrangement to be employed in the molten type machine, respectively in the photomechanical machine.
It is necessary, with some forms of composition, to add a definite number of units to successive characters, to increase the spacing. rrn characters, in other cases multiple words.
So that such a composition can still be obtained with the machine described, the stop lock II passes through a smoothing support II-1 (fig. 1).
This support comprises a stop H5, a vertical bar H6 capable of sliding and. having an inch born surface HÎ, which is intended to engage with the stopper H5 to move the support H-1 towards the. left, looking at the fi, (,. 7, and bring a second stop 112 in a position where it can engage with one of the notches of block I. The position of the bar 116 is controlled by hand, by means of an H @ controller.
In conventional typographic machines allowing to obtain a differential spacing of characters, whether they are normal characters or italic characters, the final stop of the rack E is adjustable by means of a stop member. . By pulling this organ backwards, the mesh ring F can be engaged with the wheel A, so as to measure two more units than with the usual composition. Any charac ter of a particular number of units is denied, due to these two additional units, such as its own width plus two units, and this adjustment of the stopping of the 1st rack E is carried out at the using a hand lever.
To use this spacing device which adds two units to each character to be spaced and still use the typographic machine measuring mechanism described to add a variable number of units to selected characters, the stopper adjustable, instead of forming an end stop for the rack E, is constituted by the block I adjacent to the stop latch II.
When, in addition to the variable quantity to be added to the characters selected by the lock H, a certain space must be added to each character to further separate the characters from the particular word, the lever Hs is actuated to push the bar H6 downwards The inclined flank H7 of the bar H6 engages the stop Hls and moves the support II4 to the left thus turning the lock HI around its pivot and bringing the notch 1H2 under the block I, so that when the frame C moves clockwise, it adds to the character the quantity recorded by the lock H plus two units determined by the block I against which the notch H2 now comes to record two additional units.
