Machine for composing and melting typographical lines The present invention relates to a machine for composing and melting typographic lines of the type in which the circulating matrices and space bands are composed in line and are then presented against the face of a mold, the line is justified between a pair of line clamp jaws, the mold is filled with molten metal intended to form a letterpress block line against the dies which produces the printing characters on said bar and finally, after the platemaking operation, the line is raised away from the jaws and distributed.
In practice, it is often necessary to vary the length of the bars produced and therefore one of the line clamp jaws, the left one, must be adjustable so that it can be adapted to the desired line length. A corresponding adjustment of the position of the stopper of the composter carriage is necessary in order to prevent the composite line from being exceeded. It is currently common practice to provide the machine with a common control device serving to effect these two adjustments simultaneously or in unison.
The object of the present invention is to enable the use of line retraction and centering devices without these interfering with - or being hampered by - an adjustment mechanism.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a partial front view. Fig. 1 a is a view on a larger scale of a rack and pinion mechanism used to actuate a stop member of the stop of the composter cart.
Fig. 2 is a plan view, with partial tear-away, showing the linkage mechanism between the left line clamping jaw and the stop of the composter carriage that the embodiment takes, this view also showing an organ of stopping said stopper and an indicator associated with it.

Fig. 4 is an enlarged front view of an indicator used to indicate the position of the left jaw and the stop of the composter cart.
Fig. 5 is a schematic of an electrical circuit which is controlled by the spaceband escape mechanism and which operates a spaceband counter.

Fig. 7 is a front view, on a large scale, of an indicator variant intended to indicate the space remaining to be filled, in units of ems, as well as the number of space bands contained in the compound line.
Fig. 8 is a vertical section of the counter intended to actuate the needle of the space band indicator.
Fig. 9 is a rear view of the parts shown in FIG. 8.
In the embodiment of the machine shown in the drawing, the dies X (shown in dotted lines in fig. 1) and the space bands Y (fig. 6) are freed from their respective magazines by the maneuver of. a keyboard and are delivered one by one by a star wheel 1 inside a composter elevator 2, in which they are composed in line with a resistant finger 3 forming part of a composter cart 4.
The carriage 4 is mounted so as to be able to move freely to the left in antagonism to the action of a res comes out 5 of just sufficient force to quickly return the carriage 4 to the right to its initial position, after a line compound was bred for transfer. The compound line is then delivered in the known manner between line clamping jaws 6 and 7 with a view to the platemaking operation of the block line.
Line clamp jaws 6 and 7 are rigidly attached to sliding blocks 8 and 9 (fig. 2), respectively, but block 8 of the left jaw is movable longitudinally relative to a sliding guide carriage 10 , which makes it possible to adjust the position of said jaw towards or at. starting from the right jaw 7 to adapt it to lines of different lengths, even when the machine is fitted with a line retraction device.
Thus, the carriage 10 is connected to one of the levers of this device (not shown), so that it actuates the left line clamping jaw in any one of its adjustment positions. The right jaw 7 can of course be connected directly to the other lever of the line retraction device, all in the known manner.
The adjustment described above of the left jaw 6 is carried out using a threaded rod 11 which is capable of turning and which is guided by a smooth portion 11a located on the left in the carriage 10 and whose threaded portion cooperates with a threaded opening of the jaw block 8. On the right, the threaded rod 11 is telescopically assembled with a rotating sleeve 12 passing through a smooth longitudinal bore formed in the sliding block 9. In view of such a telescopic assembly, the threaded rod 11 has at least one flat part cooperating with at least one flat inside the sleeve 12. The latter is provided at its right end with a rotating toothed wheel 13.
A composter carriage stopper, in the form of an adjustable screw 14, is carried by a block 15 which is adjustable in a straight line. This block is screwed onto a second threaded rod 16, the opposite end of which is rotatably mounted in a housing 17 which has an opening 18 at the front intended to receive the block. A marker 19 of the block 15 coo father with a fixed scale 20 graduated in ems, and carried by the housing 17. The length of the threaded rod 16 is equal to half that of the threaded rod 11 and this rod 16 is provided with 'a rotating toothed wheel 21, the diameter of which is twice that of the toothed wheel 13, with which it constantly meshes.
Due to this ratio of 2 to 1 in favor of the threaded rod 11, the latter makes two turns for each turn of the threaded rod 16. If it is assumed that the pitch of the two threaded screws is one em , it follows that an adjustment of 1 em of the left line clamping jaw 6 leads to an adjustment in the same direction of half of em of the block 15 of the composter trolley. However, as indicated above, the scale 20 has been graduated in ems to indicate the actual linear adjustment of the left jaw 6. The precision linear adjustment of the block 15 of the composter cart is made possible. by other means which will now be described.
The two threaded rods receive their rotational movements, via the toothed wheels 13 and 21, from a handwheel 22 which is connected to said wheels by a train of toothed wheels 23, 24 and 25. The toothed wheels 23 , 24 and 25, as well as the wheels 13 and 21, are all arranged inside the casing 17, while the handwheel 22 is mounted outside said casing (FIG. 2).
The handwheel 22 is used to make the main adjustments in ems which are indicated on scale 20, but the fine adjustments, made in points or twelfths of an em, are made using a joystick. 26 directly attached to the threaded rod 16, at the right-hand end of this rod, and a rotary dial 27, this dial being provided with a scale which is graduated in points x and which cooperates with a mark located at the right end of the scale 20 (fig. 4).
In known machines, the stop member of the stop is directly attached to the composter carriage and therefore moves with this carriage at the same speed and in the same measure, but in the present embodiment, said stopper is mounted independently of the carriage and moves with this carriage at half of its speed and to an extent equal to half that of said carriage to correspond to the lower rate and amplitude of movement of the block 15 of said carriage. The block stopper 15 is in the form of a long socket 28, the right end of which is attached to a support bracket 29 which protrudes upward and forward from an additional carriage. 30 sliding in a very long groove 30a made on the front face of the composter carriage 4.
On the left, the sleeve 28 is supported by a grooved roller 31 placed below it and mounted loosely in the upper end of a fixed support fitting 32. The sleeve 28 and the threaded rod 16 extend beyond one. and the other to some extent on the composter, but the fact that the pieces are arranged in the front allows the known post flywheel to be folded down whenever it is desirable to have access to the line in. composition course. It will also be noted that the casing 17 intended to enclose the threaded rod 16 and its control mechanism is mounted on a vice frame A, so that it can be rotated freely to move it away from its working position or the return to this position, without risk of collision with the block 15 of the composter carriage and the stop sleeve 28.
On the right end of the additional trolley 30 is mounted a rotating movable pinion 33, which meshes with a rack 34, placed above it and fixed to the composter trolley 4, as well as with a second crank 35 , normally fixed, which is mounted below said pinion in a fixed front plate B. Due to this chain link and pinion connection between the main component carriage 4 and the additional carriage 30, the transmission ratio is 2 to 1 in favor of the main composter cart so that during line composition the rate and range of motion of socket 28 will be half the rate and range of motion of the main composer cart.
It follows that, although the adjustment of the block 15 of the composter carriage has been carried out in accordance with the scale 20 gra duée en ems, the amplitude of the linear movement of this stop is only half -em for each movement of an em ; the sleeve 28 compensates for this linear adjustment of lesser amplitude of the screw 14 forming a stop, given that it itself only moves one half an em for each full em in the composter cart 4.
It follows that the stop of the composter carriage controls the length of the compound line strictly in accordance with the adjustment of the left jaw, although the length of the threaded rod 16 is only half that of the threaded rod. 11.
The second rack 35 is not really fixed; it is however normally kept stationary by a latch capable of pivoting 36 which abuts against its right end, while its left end is kept in contact with a fixed stop 38 by a spring 37 which constantly urges said rack to the left against said stopper. Therefore, when composing a compact line, the composter cart 4 is locked so that no further movement to the left can be made but, by lifting the latch 36, the cage 35 is set. even to move to the right, allowing a corresponding movement of the composter cart to the left (see the dotted lines in fig. la).
The operator can then make any necessary correction on the compound line.
Although, as indicated above, the contact of the sleeve 28 with the screw 14 of the composter carriage determines the length of the compound line and prevents the introduction of additional matrices into the composter, the operator Usually the composition ceases a little before the line has reached its maximum length, in order to leave room for the usual justification. At this point he has to do some quick mental math. He must note the unfilled space (measure in ems) which remains in the line and realize if he has a sufficient number of space bands in the line to widen the latter to its full length.
Usually it takes at least three space bands to widen a line by an em. The operator must therefore calculate the termination of each line in a corresponding way. To help it in this calculation, a line length calculator and indicator device, the role of which is to indicate the real state of the line when it is about to be completed, cooperates with the socket 28. As shown, inside the socket 28 is disposed a long rod 40, the left end of which projects beyond the end of the socket so that it comes into contact with the stop 14 of the carriage. composter at a point located in front of the socket 28 itself.
At its opposite end, the rod 40 engages the lower end of a pivoting needle 41 moving opposite two scales 42 and 43 (Fig. 3), graduated on a plate 44 which rises from the aforementioned console 29 born.
The upper scale 42 is graduated in ems units, from 0 to 4 ems, to indicate the space remaining free and the lower scale 43 is established to indicate in terms of extensibility of the space bands (up to 12 spaces -bands) lack of ems units. The two scales 42 and 43 and the movement of the needle 41 are set to correspond to a ratio of approximately 2: 1 relative to the actual measurement of the em unit, in order to facilitate reading of the two scales.
Normally, needle 41 will occupy its extreme right position, which is that of Figs. 1, 2 and 3, under the influence of a spring 45, which also normally maintains the rod 40 of the indicator in its extreme left position, protruding in front of the bush 28. The arrangement of the pieces is such that the needle does not begin to move to the left until it shoots when the line has come within 4 ems of its maximum length. Pivoting to the left opposite the scale 42, said needle indicates by the lines of the gra duation the number of ems and half-ems which remain in the unfilled line.
The scale is graduated from left to right, so that the needle passes successively through the numbers 4, 3, 2, 1, reaching zero, which indicates a complete line. The lower scale 43 is also graduated from left to right and is set so that it represents the unused fractions of space bands contained in the compound line. By pivoting from 4 to 0 on the scale graduated in ems, the needle pivots from 12 to 0, on the lower scale 43 of the space bands. For example, when the needle faces line 10, the operator knows that if there are ten space bands in the compound line, the line will be full bar justified and cliché.
It goes without saying that the operator must have counted the real number of space bands contained in the line. As the guille moves to the left simultaneously with the filling of the line, the less space bands will be needed to justify the line to its full extent, and this lesser number of space bands will be indicated. on the scale. It should be understood that the two scales shown have been given for explanatory purposes only, since the space bands vary somewhat in thickness and extensibility, so that the number of space bands necessary to justify a line to some extent is not always the same.
A variant of the line indicator has been shown in FIGS. 5 to 7. The rod 40 and the needle 41 are as before, but the scale 42 graduated in ems is the lower scale. A separate needle 50 is intended to cooperate with a scale 51 of the space bands, and an automatic counter mechanism actuates this second needle 50, which moves from left to right, that is to say in the opposite direction of needle 41. As a result, the operator is relieved of the task of counting the number of space bands in the line.
The needle 50 (fig. 8 and 9) is fixed to a rotary shaft 52 of which is integral a ratchet segment 53. On the shaft 52 is mounted a swinging arm 54 which carries a pawl 55 intended to engage. with the teeth of the segment 53. A spring 56 normally maintains the arm 54 in its initial position (FIG. 9). A solenoid 57, the frame of which is connected to the outer end of the arm 54, actuates the pawl 55 to advance the toothed segment 53, tooth by tooth, by moving from 0 to 10 the needle on the scale 51 space bands. A retaining pawl 58, actuated by a spring 59, prevents retrograde movement of segment 53 and maintains needle 50 in its various indicator positions along scale 51.
Once the line is composed and raised for the transfer, the retaining pawl 58 disengages from the segment 53 to allow said segment and the needle 50 to be returned to their initial positions by a torsion spring, not shown, secured. to the shaft 52. This release of the retaining pawl 58 is effected by an elbow lever 59 'which pivots about a point 60 and the upper end of which engages with the retaining pawl 58, while its end lower carries a roller intended to be actuated by a cleat 61 with bevelled ends, fixed to the upper edge of the composter carriage 4, this cleat acting when said carriage returns to its initial position (fig. 8 and 9).
All the working parts relating to the needle 50, with the exception of the stopper 61, are supported by the plate 44 or by the console 29 of the additional carriage 30, most of these parts being hidden by a cover 44a. located at the back of plate 44.
The solenoid 57 is mounted in an electrical circuit in which is also mounted a normally open switch 62 (Fig. 5). The current, derived from a 110-volt AC distribution network, is reduced to 24 volts by a transformer T, then converted by a rectifier R to direct current at 18 volts.
The switch 62 is intended to be closed momentarily each time a space band Y is freed from a magazine Z (fig. 6) by the operation of a known escape lever 70. This lever 70 is actuated to from the keyboard, in a known manner, through the intermediary of a lever 71 pivoting about an intermediate point of its length and a rod 72 with cam control.
Each time tape space is freed by magazine Z, switch 62 temporarily closes and solenoid 57 is energized to impart a driving motion to segment 53 and thus causes needle 50 to move. from one division to the next facing the scale 51. When the exhaust control parts are returned to their starting positions, after the release of the successive space bands, the switch 62 returns to its normal open position to de-energize the solenoid 57 and allow the return of the drive pawl 55 to its starting position.
As a result, the scale 51 directly indicates the number of space-banners contained in the compound line. At the moment when the composition of the line approaches its end, the rod 40 comes into contact with the stop 14 of the composter carriage and begins the movement of the needle 41 to the left facing the scale 42 graduated in ems. When the two needles 50 and 41 meet, the operator knows that the compound line can be justified suitably without the need to count the space bands in the line. In the absence of any band space,
the operator will have to rely only on the position of needle 41, which indicates how much the line is less than the maximum length.
