<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

not usable as is; they must first be adapted by substitution to the intended use and dyeing process. The use of phthalocyaninos as vat dyes presents special difficulties, as they are very difficult or impossible to vat and generally poorly suited for dyeing in this form.
It turns out that cobalt phthalocyanine differs from other phthalocyanines in this regard. It is easy to sleep off. and many attempts have been made to improve this property and the other dyeing and printing properties by the introduction of suitable substituents. Despite all the progress, it has not yet been possible to solve all the problems which arise in the belt and printing with cobalt phthalocyanines; in particular, cobalt phthalocyanine dyes and prints are insufficiently moisture resistant (fastness to water, washing, boiling lye and perspiration).
It has now been discovered that certain sulphide or selenium derivatives of cobalt phthalocyanines are very good vat dyes. -
These easy-to-quench cobalt phthalocyanines, containing 0.5% to 10% sulfur or selenium, with markedly improved tinctorial properties, are obtained by heating unsubstituted, alkylated or halo-alkylated cobalt phthalocyanines in a bath of molten aluminum chloride with 0.01 to 4 moles of sulfur, selenium or perchloromethylmercaptan per mole of cobalt phthalocyanine at 20 -110 C, preferably at 50 -100 C.
The reaction products obtained do not correspond to defined constitutional formulas. Those are

It is advantageous to add to aluminum chloride

It is possible to use for one part of i; àaci; 1 ±; ù, for example about '+0 parts of solvent (bath 1.1,: chloride of a.urenrß; â,), when sulfur or selenium is used, ot 10 parts of solvent when using parahlor.o.:cthy7. mereupt-an.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
It is advantageous to dissolve the cobalt phthalocyanine in the bath of aluminum chloride and urea (for example), to add the sulfur or perchloromethanethiol and to leave or heat the mixture for 10 to 30 hours at the temperature of transformation until the reaction is complete. The end of the reaction can be recognized, either by the fact that the cobalt phthalocyanine derivative becomes easy to cook, or by the disappearance of the characteristic odor of perchloromethyl mercaptan. The reaction mixture, which is still liquid, is then poured into a cold dilute acid, in particular in hydrochloric acid, and the precipitated dye is isolated by draining and washing.
Sulfurized or selenized cobalt phthalocyanins can be cuveted in a known manner, for example with the aid of an alkali and sodium dithionite. There are thus obtained dyes and in particular bright blue to greenish blue prints which are very fast to light and to boiling lye on cellulose fibers such as cotton, linen and rayon viscose. Le.3 dyes according to the invention can also be vats in a weakly alkaline medium, for example in the presence of ammonia, and serve to dye and print wool.
Due to their insolubility, the new dyes are also suitable for coloring lacquers and plastics such as polystyrene or polyamides.
The following examples describe suitable implementations of the new process. In these examples, parts are parts by weight.

The insoluble residue is filtered off and washed until neutral. 10.5 parts of dye soluble in concentrated sulfuric acid are obtained with an olive green coloring which gives an olive green vat and dyes the cotton bright blue.
