<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"PRODUCTION OF NEW COLORING MATERIALS IN THE TANK"
The Applicant has found that new colorants are obtained in the tank when Bz 1-Bz l'-dibenzanthronyle is treated with nitrating agents and when the products thus obtained are treated, if necessary. after their reduction, with caustic alkalis. We get groin! colorful crafts with bluish-gray vats dyeing the plant fiber in bluish-gray shades which stand out for their richness and excellent solidity. These new coloring matters, subject to appropriate treatment - halegenination, nitration, oxidation followed by alkylation, can be transformed into other equally valuable coloring matters.
All these products can be used as such or after having been previously converted by known methods into salts of esters-salts of their leuco-derivatives.
The examples which follow illustrate the present invention without however limiting it,

Example
45.8 parts of Bz 1-Bz-dibenzanthronyl are dissolved at room temperature (10-20) in 920 parts of sulfuric acid free from water. The mixture is stirred until completely dissolved, then 13 parts of a mixture of equal parts of sulfuric acid free of water and nitric acid are introduced over the course of one hour. During this operation, it is observed that the coloration of the reaction medium, which was originally eosin red, turns red-brown.
After the introduction of the nitric mixture, the mixture is stirred for a further 2 hours, then the reaction product is poured onto crushed ice and the brown nitro derivative filtered. yellow. This dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with an eosin red color, which unlike the color of the starting material which was characterized by an intense yellow-reddish fluorescence has only a slight effect. brownish fluorescence. The new product which dissolves only with difficulty in boiling acetic acid and toluene can be crystallized from hot nitrobenzene.
Example 2
A mixture of 300 parts of caustic potash and 150 parts of alcohol is heated to 1600. which causes part of the alcohol to evaporate. Into the clear melt is introduced over 15 minutes at 160-1700 30 parts of nitor-2-Bz-dibenzanthronyl obtained according to the data of the previous example. The molten mass immediately turns an intense blue and a slight evolution of ammonia occurs.
Once everything is introduced, the temperature is raised to 225 and maintained for one hour.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
between 225 - 230. The melt which has become griae is, after cooling, dissolved in water and the dye formed precipitated by blowing air.
The new vat dye which contains some nitrogen appears as a dark powder and dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with a dull blue-violet color. This solution, poured into water, precipitates blue-violet flooons. The new product dissolves with great difficulty in boiling toluene with a blue coloration and a weak red-brown fluorescence, in hot nitrobenzene with a greenish-blue coloration with weak brown fluorescence and in boiling aniline in blue. The flower is bright purple, its flower gray-blue. The cotton is soap-dyed in full-bodied and very solid gray-blue shades.
If the nitro-Bz-1-Bz-dibenzanthanyl is subjected to the action of reducing agents before the alkaline melting described above, a product having the same properties will be obtained after the alkaline melting.
Example 3
5 parts of the tank dye obtained according to the data of Example 2 are suspended in 50 parts of nitrobenzene and treated at room temperature within half an hour with a mixture of 3.5 parts of. nitric acid and 25 parts of nitrobenzene. Care is taken while cooling that the temperature does not rise too much during this operation, then heat for half an hour to 50-55 and maintain this temperature for 6 hours, then, after addition of a little water and 5 parts of sodium oar- bonate the nitrobenzene is washed off with water vapor
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
and isolate the nitro dye as usual. This dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with a dull blue color.
This solution, poured into water, precipitates blue-reddish flakes. The new product dissolves in boiling toluene with a purplish-blue color with weak brown fluorescence, in hot nitro-benzene in blue with the same fluorescence and in aniline in blue. The tank is blue and the dyes on cotton which are green turn by oxidation, on the fiber (for example with bleach) in dark black.
The product of Example 2 is converted by halogenation to a dye dyeing the plant fiber blue, by oxidation followed by alkylation to a dye green dye.
Example 4
We paste 1 kilo of the dye of Example 2 with 5 liters of caustic soda at 36 Bé and 200 liters of water at 50-60, then 2.5 kos of hydrosulfite are added and the mixture is left to itself. even for 30 minutes at the same temperature. The mother tank thus obtained is poured into 800 liters of water containing 11 liters of 36 Bé caustic soda. 50 kilograms of merchandise are introduced into the dye bath thus formed, kept there for about 45 minutes with careful stirring and raising the temperature to 60, then squeezed out, rinsed with water. water containing 0.1 gr. of hydrosulphite per liter, rinsed again with pure water, neutralized with sulfuric acid, rinsed and soaped. The ooton is dyed in dark gray shades.
