<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Vessel dyes and process for making them.
The present invention is based on the finding that dianthrimides of general formula
EMI1.1
or -b-ien the corresponding anthrimidecarbazols, having in the anthraquinone residues in positions-an acylamino group,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
preferably a benzoylamino group, are valuable tank dyes. The new dyes are distinguished by their property of imparting colorations of substantially the same strength whatever method of dyeing has been employed. Of particular value is the fact that the new products can also be used advantageously for hot dyeing.
Depending on the special constitution of the finished product, very solid tones are obtained, in particular eminently lightfast, very full, pronounced and covering, preferably bordeaux, dark violet, olive, khaki and brown; as well as the intermediate shades.
The preparation of the new products can be carried out by treating Ó-arilido- Ó-acyl-aminodianthrimides in the usual way with agents having a carbazolic action, such as for example aluminum chloride in the presence of nitrobenzol, or else with concentrated sulfuric acid. As a variant of this process, the new products are also obtained by the reaction of Ó-acylamino- Ó-arylidoanthraquinone-carbazols which carry in the anthraquinone nucleus a halogenated or amino group with aminoacylaminoanthraquinones or ha-logeneacylaminoanthraquinones in optionally carbazolizing them in the known manner immediately after the reaction.

After cooling to 30, 1.5 'is added. parts by weight of finely powdered sodium nitrite and stirring the mixture is continued for some time without heating it.
The melt is then introduced, stirring and. on cooling, in an excess of diluted sodium hydroxide solution and the nitrobenzol is removed by stripping with water vapor. The reaction product in which two carboxylic rings have probably formed according to formula. next :

The anthrimide of the above formula can also be obtained by prolonged cooking of 5-benzoylamido-8-methoxy-4'-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
benzoylamidce-1,1'-dianthrimide with toluidine, the methoxy group being replaced by the toluidine residue.
For the preparation of 1-benzoylamido-4-toluido-b-chloranthrquinone mentioned above, the 4-chlorine atom in l-nitro-4,5-dichloranthraquinone can be replaced by the toluidin residue, by heating with toluidine at about 7u in the presence of anhydrous sodium acetate. The nitro group is then reduced according to the usual methods and the amino compound obtained is benzoylated.
Example 2:
1-Benzoylamide-4-toluide-5-chloranthrquinone is converted into the corresponding carbazolic derivative, according to the process of German patent 288.824 by treatment with sulfuric acid and oxidation of the intermediate product formed. of carbazolic derivative is condensed with 1-amino - benzoyl- amidoanthraquinone to give the anthrimide of the formula:
EMI4.1
This dye dyes the cotton, in a red-brown vat, a very solid bluish gray; the solution of this dye in concentrated sulfuric acid is dark green.
Example 3:
If the anthrimide obtained in accordance with Example 1 is treated by condensation of 1-benzoylamido-4-toluido-

5-chloranthraquinone with 1-amino-5-benzoylaminoanthriaquinone, with aluminum chloride-nitrobenzol, we then obtain a dye which, whatever the dyeing methods used, gives, in a red tank -brown, on cotton, a deep khaki tone, even intensity, and very solid; the dye dissolves in concentrated uric tallow acid giving a dark blue color.

with 1 niol. from 1-arri, no-benzoyZminoantraquinone, a 1, 2'-dianthrimide is formed which in hot vats gives slightly stronger dark purple colorings than in cold vats. The vat of this dye is a wine-red color and its solution in concentrated sulfuric acid is green; its solidity properties, in particular to light, are excellent.
Example 5.
EMI5.4
IG parts by weight of 1,2'-dianthrimide formed by condensation of 1 mol. of 1 benzoylamida-4- J3-ruphthyl.amino-6-chloranthraquinone with. 1 mol. of 1-amino-4-benzoylamidoanthraquinone are dissolved in 1 part by weight of about 85% sulfuric acid. Stirred while cooling for several hours; the solution is then poured into ice water containing 2 parts by weight of sodium nitrite and heated with stirring to 90.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The reaction product gives shades quite analogous to those of the dye obtained according to Example 4 and it is probably identical to the latter. Instead of 85% sulfuric acid, anhydrous aluminum chloride can also be used for condensation in a nitro-benzol solution.
If we replace in the example above the 1-amino-
EMI6.1
a = benzoylamido-anthraqainone by equal quantities of 1-amino-b-benzoylaxidoanhtràqainone, we then obtain a full and very solid bordeaux which dyes, in a red-brown vat, the cotton with colorations of almost equal strength, according to the said - various dyeing methods; its solution in concentrated sulfuric acid is grass green.
Example 6.
If the solution of the dianthrimide obtained according to Example 5 a is left in contact with approximately 85% sulfuric acid and for 24 hours at a temperature of 20-25.
EMI6.2
starting from I-benzoylamido-4 - naphthYlamino-b-chloranthraquinone and 1-amino-4-benzoylamido-anthraquinone, an intermediate coloring product then crystallizes out. For further processing, one can proceed according to Example 5.
A dye is obtained which dyes the cotton in strong corinthian tones in a wine-red vat; the dye dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with a blue-black color.
In this case, an extreme double carbon azole nucleus was probably formed and not a single one as in Example 5
