Abstract

Un catalizador de oxidacion que comprende un soporte de carbon, un metal noble y un promotor, en donde: a) el metal noble y el promotor están en una superficie del soporte de carbon, donde el catalizador produce menos de 0,5 mmol de monoxido de carbono por gramo de catalizador cuando se calienta una muestra seca del catalizador, después que ha sido calentado a una temperatura de aproximadamente 500sC durante aproximadamente 1 hora en una atmosfera de hidrogeno y antes de ser expuesto a un oxidante seguido de calentamiento en la atmosfera de hidrogeno, se calienta en una atmosfera de helio desde aproximadamente 20 a aproximadamente 900sC a una velocidad de aproximadamente 10sC por minuto, y luego a aproximadamente 900sC durante aproximadamente 30 minutos; el promotor constituye por lo menos 0,05% por peso del catalizador, y el soporte de carbon tiene un área de superficie específica de aproximadamente 10 a aproximadamente 3000 m2/g, como es medido por el método de Brunauer-Emmett-Teller; y/o b) él soporte de carbon tiene un metal noble, el promotor, carbon y oxígeno en una superficie del mismo, el catalizador tiene una relacion de átomos de carbono respecto de los átomos de oxígeno de por lo menos aproximadamente 30:1 en la superficie, segun lo medido por espectroscopía fotoelectronica de rayos X, después de calentar el catalizador a una temperatura de aproximadamente 500sC durante aproximadamente 1 hora en una atmosfera de hidrogeno y antes de exponer el catalizador a un oxidante a continuacion del calentamiento en la atmosfera de hidrogeno, el promotor constituye por lo menos el 0,05% por peso del catalizador, y el soporte de carbon tiene un área de superficie específica de aproximadamente 10 a aproximadamente 3000 m2/g, como es medido por el método de Brunauer-Emmett-Teller; y/o c) el catalizador se prepara mediante un proceso que comprende depositar un metal noble en una superficie de un soporte de carbon y después calentar la superficie a una temperatura de por lo menos aproximadamente 400sC, antes de la deposicion del metal noble, el soporte de carbon tiene carbono y oxígeno en su superficie en cantidades tales que la proporcion de átomos de carbono respecto de los átomos de oxígeno de la superficie es de por lo menos aproximadamente 20:1, segun lo medido mediante espectroscopía fotoelectronica de rayos X.
