- the spherical aberration correction value is decreased by 1 ⁇ m for each detection of i-MLSE (3 ⁇ m ⁇ 2 ⁇ m ⁇ ... ⁇ ⁇ 3 ⁇ m ⁇ ⁇ 4 ⁇ m).
- the initial setting value of the spherical aberration correction value is stored in the memory 15 in advance.
- the initial setting value of the spherical aberration correction value and the possible range may be set as appropriate according to the specifications of the reproducing apparatus 100 and the optical disc 1.

It is a graph which shows the relationship with an amplitude, respectively.
- the spherical aberration correction value when i-MLSE is minimum does not match the spherical aberration correction value when the amplitude of the RF signal is maximum.
- a read-only optical disc (optical disc A which is a super-resolution medium) in which information is recorded in a pit group including a pit shorter than the length of the optical system resolution limit
- the spherical aberration correction value when i-MLSE is minimized (that is, the signal quality is best) and the spherical aberration correction value when the amplitude of the RF signal is maximized are large. May be different.
- i-MLSE 15.5%
- the reliability of the optical disk playback system (playback apparatus) is lost.
- the i-MLSE value is about 18% in the spherical aberration correction value when the amplitude of the RF signal is maximum.
- the conventional reproducing apparatus that determines the spherical aberration correction value on the basis of the amplitude of the RF signal, reliable information reproduction is not performed on the super-resolution medium (for example, the optical disc A). There are cases where reproduction is not performed depending on the signal quality inherent to the super-resolution medium.
- the reproducing apparatus 100 determines the spherical aberration correction value with reference to the index (i-MLSE value) indicating the signal quality itself. Specifically, when the optical disc A is reproduced by the reproducing apparatus 100, the value of i-MLSE is about 14%. In addition, when the optical disc B is reproduced by the reproducing apparatus 100, the value of i-MLSE is about 10%.
- the reproducing apparatus 100 information can be reproduced with the signal quality inherent to the optical disc 1 itself that is a super-resolution medium. Therefore, the reproduction reliability is improved for both the optical disc A and the optical disc B.
- the reproduction apparatus 100 evaluates the quality of the reproduction signal converted by the RF signal processing circuit 9, and the quality evaluation of the reproduction signal evaluated by the i-MLSE detection unit 141.
- a spherical aberration correction unit 142 that corrects spherical aberration generated in the optical pickup 6 using the result (i-MLSE value).
- the conventional reproducing apparatus is not a spherical aberration correction value when the i-MLSE value is minimized, but a spherical surface when the amplitude (reflectance) of the RF signal is maximum.
- the optical disc 1 was reproduced using the aberration correction value. That is, the conventional reproducing apparatus changes the spherical aberration correction value by using the RF signal amplitude detector that is also used at the time of layer jump to each layer, and determines the spherical aberration correction value that maximizes the RF signal amplitude as information. It was selected as a spherical aberration correction value to be used for reproduction.
- the signal characteristic of the reproduction signal is recognized by those skilled in the art as common sense that the return light caused by the reflectance of the optical information recording medium is received by the reproduction device, and the spherical surface obtained by other methods. This is because the cost increases when aberration correction is performed.
- the super-resolution medium is not reproduced due to the signal quality inherent to the super-resolution medium due to the difference in the pit shape.
- the reproducing apparatus 100 includes the i-MLSE detection unit 141 and the spherical aberration correction unit 142, and unlike the case of correcting the spherical aberration using the amplitude of the RF signal, an unspecified number of super-resolution media. It is possible to accurately reproduce information such as content recorded in the.
- the reproducing apparatus 100 of the present embodiment has an appropriate spherical aberration correction value under a smaller reproduction range (that is, a smaller parameter) of the optical disc 1 than the reproducing apparatus 200 of the second embodiment described later. There is an effect that can be determined.
- jitter detection cannot correctly evaluate the signal quality of a pit group including pits having a length shorter than the optical system resolution limit. Therefore, in order to determine an appropriate spherical aberration correction value, a lot of additional A component (function) is required.
- the reproduction apparatus 100 uses the i-MLSE value as an index indicating the signal quality, the number of components and the cost can be reduced compared to the configuration using the jitter value as the index indicating the signal quality. There is an advantage that you can.
- FIG. 7 is a functional block diagram showing a schematic configuration of the playback apparatus 200 of the present embodiment.
- the playback device 200 of this embodiment has a configuration obtained by replacing the control unit 14 included in the playback device 100 of Embodiment 1 with a control unit 24.
- regenerating apparatus 200 of this embodiment has is the same as each member which the reproducing
- the control unit 24 includes an error rate detection unit 241 (signal quality evaluation unit, address information error detection unit) and a spherical aberration correction unit 142.
- the control unit 24 of the present embodiment has a configuration obtained by replacing the i-MLSE detection unit 141 included in the control unit 14 of the first embodiment with an error rate detection unit 241.
- the reproduction signal from the RF signal processing circuit 9 is given to the error rate detection unit 241. Then, the error rate detection unit 241 extracts address information (known) indicating the reproduction position from the reproduction signal.
- the error rate detection unit 241 detects the error rate from the address information. For example, the error rate detection unit 241 calculates a bit error rate (Bit Error Rate, bER) from the address information, and detects the bER as an error rate.
- Bit Error Rate Bit Error Rate
- the information used by the error rate detection unit 241 may not be address information, and may be known information.
- the error rate detection unit 241 determines the spherical aberration correction value when the error rate (quality evaluation result) is minimized, in the same manner as the above-described processes S11 to S16. Then, the reproducing apparatus 200 starts information reproduction on the optical disc 1 in the same manner as the above-described process S6.
- the playback apparatus 200 includes an error rate detection unit 241 that detects an error rate of address information included in the playback signal and evaluates the quality of the playback signal, thereby determining a spherical aberration correction value based on the error rate. is doing. That is, the playback device 200 uses an error rate as an index indicating signal quality.
- the optical disk 1 that is a super-resolution medium similar to the playback apparatus 100 of the first embodiment (a configuration that uses the i-MLSE value as an index indicating signal quality).
- Information can be reproduced based on the signal quality inherent to the device itself. For this reason, there is an effect that the reliability of reproduction is improved for both the optical disc A and the optical disc B described above. That is, information such as content recorded on an unspecified number of super-resolution media can be accurately reproduced.
- the playback apparatus receives a reproduced RF signal ( In general, a function of detecting an address from a reproduction signal from the RF signal processing circuit 9 is provided.
- the reproducing apparatus 200 it is possible to determine an appropriate spherical aberration correction value without adding a new function for detecting an index indicating signal quality.

- FIG. 9 is a plan view showing details of a part of the optical disc 20 shown in FIG.
- the optical disc 20 includes a data area 22 (first area) in which information such as content is recorded, and a medium information area 23 (in which information (medium information) related to the optical disk 20 is recorded).
- the second area) is assigned in advance. That is, the optical disc 20 is different from the optical disc 1 of the first embodiment in that the medium information area 23 is provided.
- Information relating to the optical disc 20 includes medium identification information indicating that the data area 22 is included, reproduction speed information used by the reproduction apparatus 300 during reproduction, a medium unique number for copy protection, and a position for specifying the position in the data area 22. Area position information and the like are included.
- the medium identification information only needs to identify (specify) the type of the medium itself, and at least the data area 22 only needs to indicate the super-resolution recording form.
- FIG. 9 is a diagram showing details of the a part of the optical disc 20 shown in FIG.
- a plurality of pits are arranged in the data area 22 and are formed in a row in the circumferential direction at every predetermined track pitch TpD.
- a plurality of pits are arranged and formed in a row in the circumferential direction for each predetermined track pitch TpR.
- a mark edge recording method capable of recording information using pits having different shapes and sizes is employed.
- a modulation recording method (recording coding method) called 1-7PP (1-7 Parity Preserve / Prohibit RMTR (RepeatedmMinimum Transition Run Length)) is used. That is, in this method, pits are formed in each of the data area 22 and the medium information area 23 by a modulation method which is one type of (1, 7) RLL modulation (Run Length Limited).
- RLL modulation Raster Length Limited
- information is recorded by pits (or recording marks) of 2T to 8T.
- the pit length of the data area 22 is expressed as “D2T to D8T”
- the pit length of the medium information area 23 is expressed as “R2T to R8T”.
- the above modulation does not depend on the bit string pattern of the original information (information before modulation), and the recording pattern has a predetermined frequency bandwidth (that is, a combination of recording marks and spaces limited by a plurality of types).
- the recording density is increased by extending the length of the shortest recording mark or space beyond that of the original information.
- the 2-bit unit of the original information is converted into 3-channel bit units, and the recording pattern after conversion is limited to a length from 2 channel bits (2T) to 8 channel bits (8T).
- the frequency bandwidth is limited by being modulated into a recording mark and a space.
- modulation by the 1-7PP modulation recording method is suitable for high density recording.
- the modulation method is not limited to 1-7PP modulation, and other high density such as (1,7) RLL modulation other than 1-7PP modulation, 8/16 modulation, (2,7) RLL modulation, etc.
- a modulation method suitable for recording may be used.
- the reason for recording information using pits or recording marks having different lengths such as (1,7) RLL modulation is that the recording density is reduced by recording information using pits or recording marks having the same length. This is because it increases.
- the data area 22 is allocated between the medium information areas 23, and the above-mentioned contents are recorded by providing pits having concave and / or convex at the time of substrate molding.
- This pit is a pit having a length of D2T to D8T in FIG. 9, and the length D2T of the shortest pit is shorter than the length of the optical system resolution limit of the reproducing apparatus 300. That is, since the content is recorded including a pit having a length shorter than the optical system resolution limit of the playback apparatus 300 (super-resolution recording mode), higher-density recording than a normal medium is possible. .
- the medium information area 23 is assigned in advance to the innermost and outermost peripheral portions of the optical disc 20, and information about the super-resolution medium 1 is recorded by pits having concave and / or convex shapes.
- This pit is a pit having a length of R2T to R8T in FIG. 9, and the shortest pit length R2T is equal to or longer than the optical system resolution limit length of the reproducing apparatus 300 (normal recording form). That is, the length of all pits in the medium information area 23 is longer than the length of the shortest pit in the data area 22, and the information recording density in the medium information area 23 is lower than that of the data area 22.
- the medium information area 23 is provided on the inner periphery and the outer periphery of the optical disc 20, but is not limited to this, and may be assigned to either the inner periphery or the outer periphery.
- the cross-sectional structure of the optical disc 20 is the same as the cross-sectional structure of the optical disc 1 of the first embodiment.
- the structure of the optical disc 1 is the same as that of the data area 22.
- the optical disc 1 is not limited to (1, 7) RLL modulation, and pit formation and information recording may be performed using the various modulation methods described above.
- content is recorded by the first pit group including pits shorter than the optical system resolution limit length of the playback device 300, and information such as the content is played back by super-resolution technology.
- This is a super-resolution area.
- the medium identification information is recorded by the second pit group consisting of pits having a length equal to or longer than the optical system resolution limit of the reproducing apparatus 300, and the information can be stored without using the super-resolution technique. It is a non-super-resolution area that is reproduced (information cannot be reproduced using super-resolution technology).
- the optical disc 20 is a reproduction-only optical disc in which content is recorded by a pit group including a pit having a length shorter than the optical system resolution limit, and information can be reproduced by so-called super-resolution technology.
- This is an optical information recording medium.
- optical disk 20 of the present embodiment has a structure having the data area 22 and the medium information area 23 as described above is as follows.
- the optical information recording medium is preferably compatible with all of the corresponding playback devices (recorded information can be played back by all of the corresponding playback devices).
- the normal medium when reproducing information recorded by a pit group including pits shorter than the optical system resolution limit length (super-resolution reproduction), the light intensity (reproduction) of the reproduction light irradiated to the normal medium Need higher playback power. For this reason, when the normal medium is irradiated with reproduction light having reproduction power for super-resolution reproduction, the normal medium may be destroyed.
- a reproducing apparatus capable of reproducing both the super-resolution medium and the normal medium determines whether the optical information recording medium to be reproduced is a super-resolution medium or a normal medium, and When it is determined that the information recording medium is a super-resolution medium, it is preferable that the optical information recording medium is irradiated with a reproduction power for super-resolution reproduction. That is, it is preferable to increase the light intensity from the reproduction power for the normal medium to the reproduction power for super-resolution reproduction only when it is determined that the medium is a super-resolution medium.
- the optical disk 20 has the data area 22 and the medium information area 23 as described above, the data area 22 and the medium are added to the reproducing apparatus having the above-described configuration and capable of reproducing both the super-resolution medium and the normal medium. It is possible to irradiate each of the information areas 23 with reproduction light having an appropriate light intensity. In other words, the optical disc 20 can function as an optical information recording medium having compatibility with the reproducing apparatus.
- the medium identification information cannot be reproduced even if the medium identification information is recorded by a pit group including pits having a length shorter than the optical system resolution limit length and irradiated with reproduction light having reproduction power for a normal medium. By doing so, a method of causing the playback apparatus to identify it as a super-resolution medium is also conceivable.
- the reproducing apparatus cannot reproduce the medium identification information due to the dirt on the surface of the normal medium.
- the playback apparatus determines that the medium identification information cannot be played back, and determines that the target of playback processing is a normal medium, but a super-resolution medium. Then, the normal medium may be irradiated with reproduction light having reproduction power for super-resolution reproduction, and the normal medium may be destroyed.
- the medium identification information is formed by a pit group including pits having a length equal to or longer than the optical system resolution limit as described above.

- the first spherical aberration correction unit 342 that corrects the spherical aberration due to the variation in the thickness of the translucent layer 4 of the optical disc 20 is not required.
- the spherical aberration correction is performed by the first spherical aberration correction unit 342 at the time of reproducing the information recorded in the medium information area 23, the difference in each i-MLSE value corresponding to each spherical aberration correction value is reduced. For example, the control unit 34 analyzes the medium identification information included in the acquired medium information and determines whether the medium is a super-resolution medium or a normal medium (non-super-resolution medium). That is, it is determined that the optical disk 20 is a super-resolution medium, and the output of the semiconductor laser 61 is changed from the reproduction power for normal medium to the reproduction power for super-resolution reproduction. Then, the control unit 34 controls the focus / tracking drive circuit 10 to track the objective lens 660 to a predetermined position in the data area 22 (processing S28).
- the first spherical aberration correction unit 342 uses the index (i-MLSE) indicating the signal quality as a reference, that is, the spherical aberration when the i-MLSE value evaluated by the i-MLSE detection unit 141 is minimized.
- the spherical aberration is corrected using the correction value (processing S29; first spherical aberration correction step).
- the detailed process flow of the process S29 is the same as the process S11 to the process S16 described above.
- the control unit 34 reproduces the information recorded in the data area 22 after the first spherical aberration correction unit 342 corrects the spherical aberration using the spherical aberration correction value when the i-MLSE value is minimized. Is started (step S30).

- the control unit 44 of this embodiment has a configuration obtained by replacing the i-MLSE detection unit 141 (or the error rate detection unit 241) with a difference adjustment unit 441.
- the difference adjustment unit 441 is supplied with a reproduction signal from the RF signal processing circuit 9. Then, the difference adjustment unit 441 extracts manufacturer information (information for specifying the manufacturer of the optical disc 20) included in the medium identification information from the reproduction signal. The medium identification information is recorded in the medium information area 23 of the optical disc 20. Further, in order to reproduce the medium information area 23, the control unit 44 determines a spherical aberration correction value when the RF signal amplitude value is maximized, and provides the spherical aberration correction value to the second spherical aberration correction unit 343.
- the difference adjustment unit 441 identifies a spherical aberration correction value based on the manufacturer information (for example, a spherical aberration correction value recommended by the manufacturer in order to optimize the signal quality in reproducing the data area 22).
- the manufacturer information may be information including a spherical aberration correction value recommended by the manufacturer, or may be information that can be simply specified by the manufacturer.

- the current spherical aberration correction value set by the control unit 44 is represented as RP.
- R1 specified by a plurality of manufacturers who manufacture the optical disc 20 using (i) the quality evaluation result of the reproduction signal indicating the content recorded in the data area 22, and (ii) the medium R2 specified using the amplitude of the reproduction signal indicating the manufacturer information recorded in the information area 23 is stored in advance in association with each of the plurality of manufacturers.

- the difference adjustment unit 441 may calculate the above-described spherical aberration correction value R by reading the difference ⁇ R from the memory 15 and give it to the first spherical aberration correction unit 342.
- ⁇ Effect> In the manufacture of optical discs, manufacturing conditions such as cutting conditions for forming pits differ for each optical disc manufacturer. Accordingly, the shape of the pits of the optical disc may also differ depending on the manufacturer of the optical disc. Therefore, it can be said that the difference between the spherical aberration correction value when the signal quality is the best and the spherical aberration correction value when the amplitude of the RF signal is maximum depends on the manufacturer of the optical disc.
- the difference between the spherical aberration correction value (R1) specified based on the manufacturer information and the spherical aberration correction value (R2) when the amplitude of the RF signal becomes maximum is different.
- the difference ⁇ R is specified in advance for each optical disc manufacturer.
- R1 described above is a representative value of the spherical aberration correction value recommended by the optical disc manufacturer, for example. Therefore, even if the optical disk manufacturer is the same, the spherical aberration correction value optimum for reproduction of the data area 22 may not match R1 due to optical disk manufacturing tolerances or the like.
- the reproducing apparatus 400 does not detect i-MLSE (or address information error rate) that is an evaluation standard of signal quality, and acquires manufacturer information to obtain a spherical aberration correction value at the time of reproducing the data area 22. To decide. Therefore, it is not necessary to provide the i-MLSE detection unit 141 (or error rate detection unit 241) in the playback device 400, and it is only necessary to provide the difference adjustment unit 441 having a simpler function.
- i-MLSE or address information error rate
- the playback device 400 of the present embodiment there is an effect that it is possible to provide a playback device with lower cost than the playback devices of the first to third embodiments.
- the spherical aberration correction value recommended by the manufacturer of the optical disc 20 is used as the value of R1 recorded in the memory 15 is illustrated, but the recommended value of the spherical aberration correction value is presented. It is also assumed that there are manufacturers who do not. In this case, the user may specify the value of R1 in advance and record the value in the memory 15 in association with the manufacturer identifier.
- the spherical aberration correction value when the i-MLSE value is minimized is specified as the spherical aberration correction value suitable for reproduction of the data area 22.
- the user may record the spherical aberration correction value as the value of R1 in the memory 15 of the reproducing apparatus 400.
- the optical disc 20 can be reproduced by the reproducing device 400.
- FIG. 13 is a perspective view showing an appearance of the optical disc 30 that is a target of playback processing by the playback device 500 according to the present embodiment.

- BCA Breast Cutting Area
- the optical disc 30 is provided with a BCA recording area 39, a medium information area 33, a data area 32, and a medium information area 33 in this order from the inner circumference side. Since the data area 32 and the medium information area 33 have the same configuration as that of the data area 22 and the medium information area 23, the description thereof is omitted here. That is, the optical disc 30 is different from the optical disc 20 of the third embodiment in that the BCA recording area 39 is provided on the innermost circumference side.
- the BCA recording area 39 is an area in which information relating to the optical disc 30 including medium identification information (corresponding to information relating to the optical disc 20 of the third embodiment) (medium information) is recorded.
- This medium information is obtained by irradiating an information recording layer with pulsed laser light emitted from a YAG (Yttrium Aluminum Garnet) laser or the like, as shown in FIG. 14, with a width w of about 10 ⁇ m and a length l of several hundreds. Recording is performed by forming a stripe (bar code) of about ⁇ m. That is, medium identification information is recorded in the BCA recording area 39 in a stripe shape.
- the stripe formed in the BCA recording area 39 is larger than a pit having a length of about several hundred nm. For this reason, the reproducing apparatus 500 can reproduce the medium information without performing tracking even if the focus on the BCA recording area 39 is slightly shifted. That is, when reproducing the medium information, the medium information can be reproduced without correcting (optimizing) the spherical aberration.
- the optical disc 30 is composed of a plurality of layers
- the optical disc 30 is provided on the information recording layer directly above the substrate disposed at the position farthest from the reproduction light incident side, but the present invention is not limited to this.

It has the same function as 342. Further, when reproducing the medium information recorded in the BCA recording area 39, the spherical aberration correction unit 142 corrects the spherical aberration using the initial value of the spherical aberration correction value.
