Description

光変調器
 本発明は光変調器に関し、より詳細には変調信号のキャリア数と変調多値数との組み合わせを変えることができる光変調器に関する。
 現在、光ファイバー通信システムにおいて実用化が進められている100Gs伝送システムでは、多値変調技術の一種である4相位相変調(Quadrature Phase-Shift Keying:QPSK変調)方式と多重技術の一種である偏波多重方式を用いることで、1チャンネル当たり128Gbpsの高速伝送レートを実現している。多値変調技術は、光信号の振幅と共に位相情報も利用することにより、1シンボルで多数の情報を伝送する技術である。QPSK変調方式では4値、即ち4種類の位相状態に符号を割り振ることで、1シンボルで2ビットの情報を伝送する。偏波多重方式は、偏波を利用して2系統の信号を多重化して同時に伝送する技術であり、通常の単偏波での伝送と比べて2倍の伝送レートが得られる。従って、偏波多重QPSK変調方式100G伝送システムでは、1シンボル当たり合計4ビットの情報を伝送することでき、シンボルレートをビットレートの4分の1である32Gbaudまで低減することができる。シンボルレートの大小は、偏波モード分散など伝送劣化の大きさに影響するだけでなく、変復調器への要求特性にも影響する為、システムの実現性を大きく左右する指標となる。
 100Gを超える将来の伝送を目差した研究開発においても、シンボルレートを抑えたまま伝送レートを増加させる為に、多値数をさらに増やしたQAM変調方式や伝送キャリアを複数用いるサブキャリア多重方式などが検討されている。例えば、16QAM変調方式では、16値、即ち信号空間上における16種類の位相振幅状態に符号を割る振ることで、1シンボルで4ビットの情報を伝送することができる。2サブキャリア多重方式では、2つのキャリアでそれぞれ独立して情報が伝送できるので、通常の1キャリアでの伝送と比較すると2倍のレートで情報を伝送できる。尚、サブキャリア多重方式は、キャリア間の直交関係を保つ最小間隔、即ちシンボルレートと同じキャリア間隔でキャリアを配置した場合、直交周波数分割多重方式(Orthogonal Frequency-DivisionMultiplexing:OFDM)とも言われる。
 これら方式の光信号を生成する変調器について説明する前に、先ず、これらの変調器の基本構成となるQPSK変調器について、図1~3を参照しながら説明する。図1AはQPSK変調器の構成の一例を、図1BはQPSK変調器の動作概要として、図1AのQPSK変調器中の地点A~Gのそれぞれにおける光信号の強度波形および信号点配置を示す。QPSK変調器1は、マッハツェンダー干渉計(Mach-Zehnder Interferometer:MZI)、これを親MZIと呼ぶ、の各アーム導波路部分にMZI変調器(子MZI変調器)が入れ子になったネストMZI変調器と呼ばれる構成になっている。
 図2に子MZI即ち単MZI変調器の動作を詳細に示す。尚、図1A、2Aでは変調器はニオブ酸リチウム(LiNbO:LN)のZカット基板を用いたLN変調器を想定して図示しているが、Xカット基板を用いる場合も基本的には同様の動作となる。図2Aに示すように、Zカット基板を用いた場合は、駆動データ電気信号Vdrv2を差動出力駆動回路3によって2つの出力に分離し、変調器の上側アームの変調用光移相器4と下側アームの変調用光移相器5に差動入力(下側アームに+Vdrv/2、下側アームに-Vdrv/2)して、いわゆるプッシュプル駆動を行う。Xカット基板を用いる場合は、通常、変調器アーム間に駆動電極が配置され、上下アームに逆の電界が掛かるので、自動的にプッシュプル駆動になる。さて、単MZI変調器に入力された連続(Continuous Wave、CW)光6は、3dB光カプラ7aで二分岐された後、上下アームの変調用光移相器4、5でそれぞれ位相変調を受け、3dB光カプラ7fにて再び合流する。この時の位相変調の様子を図2Bに示す。図2Bに示す矢印は、出力信号光8の電界ベクトルである。上側アーム経由の光はプラス方向の位相変調を受けるので、その電界ベクトルは半時計回り(バツ→白丸→黒丸)の軌跡を描き、下側アーム経由の光はマイナス方向の位相変調を受けるので、電界ベクトルは時計回りの軌跡を描く。両電界のベクトル合成が出力信号光の電界ベクトルとなるので、出力信号光の軌跡は実軸上の直線軌跡を描く。ここで、図2Cに示すように、単MZI変調器をアーム導波路間の位相差を2π変化させるようにデータ電気信号で駆動すると、出力光は位相0とπに位相変調されて且つ信号タイミング時には信号光強度が一定値である位相2値に変調される。このように単MZI変調器は光位相変調器として動作する。この単MZI変調器による光位相変調は、単純な光移相器のみで構成される光位相変調器による光位相変調と比べると、図2Cを見て分かるようにMZIの非線形な振る舞いにより、データ電気信号の駆動振幅が多少変動しても光信号出力が殆ど変動しないという利点を持ち、また、変調スペクトルの広がりが狭いという特長を持つため、位相変調(Phase-Shift Keying:PSK)信号を生成する変調器として好んで用いられる。図2Dは単MZI変調器13を簡易表記した図である。
 ネストMZI変調器では、図1に示すように、3dBカプラ7cで分岐されたCW光が子MZI変調器(Ich用MZI変調器9、Qch用MZI変調器10)でそれぞれ位相2値の変調(図1BのD、E参照)され、π/2光移相器11によって90°の位相偏移を受け(図1BのF参照)、3dBカプラ7dでそれら変調信号が合成されることにより、図1BのGに示すように位相4値に変調されたQPSK信号光が得られる。尚、π/2光移相器は実際には後続の位相調節器(可変光移相器)12による調整により実現され、π/2光移相器として個別には設けずに省略されることが多い。
 図3に単MZI変調器を、LN基板上に、チタン拡散により形成した光導波路(LN導波路)で作製した場合の詳細な構成を示す。図3A、図3BはZカット基板、図3C、図3DはXカット基板を用いた場合の構成をそれぞれ図示しており、図3Bは図3AのIIIBにおける断面を、図3Dは図3CのIIIDにおける断面をそれぞれ図示している。Zカット基板14では、導波路15の上部に高周波中心電極16を設け、この高周波中心電極16の周辺にGND電極17を設ける。高周波中心電極16に電圧を加えると、図3Bに示すように、導波路コア18近傍では上下方向に電界が生じる。この方向はZカット基板の分極方向19であるので、ポッケルス効果により屈折率が変化し、その結果、導波路を伝搬する光の位相が変化する。Xカット基板20では、MZIの両アーム導波路15の中間の上部に高周波中心電極16を設け、両アーム導波路の周辺の上部にGND電極17を設ける。このような電極配置により、図3Dに示すように、コア近傍ではXカット基板の分極方向19である水平方向に電界を生じさせることができ、Zカット基板と同様に伝搬光の位相制御を行うことができる。尚、高周波中心電極16は、導波路中の光の伝搬方向に合わせて、一方の端を信号入力端子とし、他方の端に終端抵抗21を接続し進行波電極構造とすることで、極めて高速な変調を可能にしている。また、本図では示していないが、この高周波電極とは別に動作点調整用に集中定数電極構造の電極を設ける場合もある。また、これ以降の図では、Zカット基板、Xカット基板にかかわらず、必要に応じて単MZI変調器を図2Dのように簡易表記する。
 次に図4を参照しながら、従来の16QAM変調器の構成及び動作について説明する。図4Aは16QAM変調器の構成を、図4Bは図4Aの変調器中の地点A~Cにおける光信号の信号点配置を示す。16QAM変調器は、1つの1入力2出力の2:1光カプラ22aと、2つのQPSK変調器1a、1bと、2つの光位相調節器(可変光移相器)12e、12fと、1つの2入力1出力の2:1カプラ22bとからなる。入力されたCW光6は、2:1光カプラ22aで分岐され、それぞれのQPSK変調器1a、1bで個別にQPSK変調され、2:1光カプラ22bで合流する。QPSK変調器経由1aのQPSK信号1の電界振幅とQPSK1b経由のQPSK信号2の比は2:1になる為、QPSK信号1とQPSK信号2の相対位相を位相調節器12e、12fで適切に調整することで、図4Bに示すように16QAM信号を生成することができる。(非特許文献1)
 次に図5を参照しながら、2サブキャリア多重QPSK変調器の構成及び動作について説明する。図5Aは従来の2サブキャリア多重QPSK変調器の構成を、図5Bは図5Aの変調器中の地点A~Fにおける信号のスペクトル、及び、信号点配置を示す。2サブキャリア多重QPSK変調器は、1入力2出力のインターリーブ光フィルタ(ILF)23と、2つのQPSK変調器1a、1bと、2つの光位相調節器(可変光移相器)12e、12fと、2入力1出力の3dB光カプラ7gとからなる。ILFは二個の3dB光カプラ7a、7bに挟まれた光路長差ΔLの遅延線からなり、公知の干渉原理により、フリースペクトルレンジ(FSR)がc/ΔL;ここでcは光速;である周期的な透過特性を持ち、入力された周波数間隔Δf=FSR/2の光を交互に分波して出力することができる。B側への透過特性T,C側の透過特性Tは、次式のように表される。

 この変調器に、周波数がΔf離れた2波長のCW光をサブキャリアとして入力する。ここで、このCW光の波長をそれぞれf1、f2とすると、f1=k・FSR、f2=(k-0.5)・FSR、ここでkは整数、である。図5Bに示すように、入力された2波長のサブキャリアは、ILF23で分波され、それぞれのQPSK変調器1a、1bで個別にQPSK変調され、3dB光カプラ7gで合流する。このようにしてサブキャリア多重信号を生成することができる(非特許文献2)。
 16QAM変調信号のように多値数が多い多値変調信号は、周波数占有帯域幅を増やすことなく1シンボルで伝送できる情報量を多くすることができるが、信号空間上の信号点の間隔が狭くなる為に雑音に対する耐力、即ち信号対雑音強度比(SNR)劣化に対する耐力が悪くなるという問題がある。一方、サブキャリア多重信号は、信号空間上の信号点間の距離は変わらないため、SNR劣化耐力はそれ程低下しないものの、周波数軸上での多重を行うため、周波数占有帯域が大きくなるという問題があった。これらの問題は、通信容量に関するシャノンの定理から演繹される本質的な問題であり、回避することはできない。即ち、ある一定の通信容量を確保するには、SNRを高く保つか、占有帯域幅を広く取るかのいずれかが少なくとも必要となる。SNRは伝送路中に配備される光増幅器で発生する自然放出光雑音により劣化するので、伝送距離が長く光増幅器を通過する回数が多い伝送路ほどSNRは低くなる。従って、効率的な伝送路の運用という観点からは、伝送距離等によって決まる伝送路のSNRに応じてこれらの変調方式を使い分けることが望まれる。即ち、伝送距離が短くSNRを高く確保できる伝送区間では16QAM変調方式のようにSNR劣化耐力はあまり良くなくても占有帯域幅が狭い信号フォーマットを用いることが望ましい。一方、伝送距離が長くSNRが悪い伝送区間ではサブキャリア多重信号のように広い周波数占有帯域が必要となるがSNR劣化耐力がある信号フォーマットを用いることが望ましい。このように変調フォーマットの使い分けを行えば、光ファイバーの利用効率を最大限に高めることができる。
 然しながら、従来の変調器は各変調フォーマット専用の構成となっており、上述のような効率的な運用を行う場合、フォーマット毎に変調器を個別に用意しなければならないという問題があった。また、伝送区間をネットワークのトラヒック状態に応じて動的に切り替えるといった柔軟なネットワーク運用を行う場合、伝送区間の距離の変更に伴って変調器を入れ替えなければならない為、固定フォーマット専用の変調器では対応できないという問題があった。
 本発明は、このような問題を鑑みてなされたもので、その目的とするところは、同一の変調器で複数の変調フォーマットをサポートする光変調器を提供することにある。
 このような目的を達成するために、本発明では以下の手段を提供する。基本的な構成を図6に示す。本発明の変調器は、分配部28と分配部28からの出力光を個別に変調する光変調器アレイ29と該変調器アレイ29からの出力光を合わせる集約部30からなる。前記分配部は、光分波機能と光分岐機能を切り替えて使用できる光分波/光分岐切替可能回路31からなる。集約部は、信号光を任意の比率で合流できる可変合流回路、及び/または、光合波機能と光合流機能を切り替えて使用できる光合波/光合流切替可能回路32とからなる。
 本変調器は、変調するキャリア光の数に応じて分配部が光分波機能を発揮することによってキャリア光を分波することができ、個別の波長毎に変調された信号光を出力することができるのでキャリア多重された信号を生成することができる。また、変調多値数に応じて分配部が可変分岐機能を発揮し、集約部の可変合流機能と連動して、各光変調器へのパワー分配比を調整することで電界合成により多値変調信号を生成することができる。このように、分配部と集約部の動作を変えることにより、キャリア数と変調多値数の異なる複数の変調フォーマットを切り替えて発生させることが可能となる。
 具体的な実施例としては、分配部は、単数又は複数の可変ILFを多段に接続して構成した可変1×M分波/分岐器、および/または1×Mの可変FFT型干渉計、および/またはILFと可変光カプラと光スイッチとからなり、ILFと可変光カプラとを光スイッチで切り替える構造、および/または可変光カプラがツリー状に接続され、各可変光カプラの出力のいずれか一方に2×1光スイッチが挿入された構造からなる。光変調器アレイは、複数の光変調器からなる。集約部は、逆ツリー状に接続された単数又は複数の可変光カプラからなる構造、および/または逆ツリー状に接続された複数の可変減衰器からなる構造、および/または逆ツリー状に接続された単数又は複数の可変光カプラと複数の可変減衰器からなる構造、および/または単段M×1可変カプラからなる構造、及び/又は単数又は複数の可変ILFを多段に接続して構成した可変M×1合波/合流器、および/またはM×1の可変FFT型干渉計、および/またはILFと可変光カプラとこれらを光スイッチで切り替える構造からなる。上記の構成により、分配部は光分波機能と可変光分岐機能を切り替えることができ、集約部は変調器からの信号光を任意の比率で合流すること、及び/又は、光合波機能と可変光合流機能を切り替えるができる。
 本発明の光変調器は、複数の光変調器をキャリア毎の変調器として、または電界合成型の多値変調器として用いることができ、変調するキャリア数と変調多値数の比率も自由に変えることができる。したがって、同一構成の変調器で複数の変調フォーマット、特に、占有帯域幅とSNR劣化耐性の異なる複数の変調フォーマット、をサポートし、更にこれら変調フォーマットを動的に切り替えることができる。

<第1の実施形態:基本的な考え方>
 図7に、本発明の第1の実施形態であるフォーマット可変光変調器の構成を示す。本形態の変調器構成は、可変1×2ILFを多段に接続して構成した可変1×M分波フィルタ24と、M個の位相変調器(PSK変調器)13-1~13-4とM/2個の2入力1出力光カプラ7g、7hと(M/2)入力1出力可変光カプラ25とからなる。図7はM=4の例を示している。
 可変ILF(Tunable ILF: TILF)27-1-1~27-2-2は二個の3dB光カプラ7a~7fに挟まれた光路長差ΔL;ここで光路長差は導波路長差ではなく、導波路の屈折率を考慮して真空中の長さに換算した値である;の遅延線及び可変光移相器12a~12fからなり、公知の干渉原理により、フリースペクトルレンジ(FSR)がc/ΔL;ここでcは光速;である周期的な透過特性を持つ。従って、周波数間隔Δf=FSR/2の光を交互に分波することができる。尚、周波数軸上でのこの周期の絶対位置は、可変移相器12a~12fを用いて2光路の相対位相を調整することにより、シフトさせることができる。また、可変光カプラ(VC)25は二個の3dB光カプラ7i、7jに挟まれた可変光移相器12g、12hからなり、可変移相器12g、12hを用いて2光路の相対位相を調整することにより、合流比を所望の値に設定することができる。この可変光カプラ25の透過特性は、公知の干渉原理により、次式のように表される。ここでTは可変光移相器12-1-1側から出力ポートへ透過する光の透過特性、Tは可変光移相器12-1-2側から出力ポートへ透過する光の透過特性である。また、φは二個の3dB光カプラに挟まれた干渉アームの位相差;下アーム側の光を基準とした上アーム側の光の位相差;であり、可変移相器12g、12hにより制御される。

このような構成のVCは干渉計型可変光カプラと呼ばれるが、他の形態、例えば、方向性結合器の結合率を変える構成のものや、Y分岐の導波構造を変える構成のものでも、もちろん構わない。
 尚、1入力2出力、或いは2入力1出力の光カプラ、可変光カプラ(VC)、可変ILF(TILF)は、2入力2出力の構成を用いて、不要な入出ポートを主信号経路には接続しない構成としても良い。また、PSK変調器13-2、13-4の後段に配置してあるπ/2光移相器11-1、11-2は、π/2光移相器の後端に配置されている可変光移相器12-2-1~12-2-4を用いた調整により実現することができるので、省略しても良い。また、それぞれのTILFの中で組になっている可変光移相器12a~12fはTILF中の相対位相を調整するので、組になっている可変光移相器12a~12fのうちいずれか一方のみ設ける構成でも構わない。同様に、PSK変調器13-1、13-2で組になっている可変光移相器12-2-1、12-2-2はPSK変調器13-1、13-2の出力光の相対位相を調整するので、可変光移相器12-2-1、12-2-2いずれか一方にのみ設ける構成でも構わない。PSK変調器13-3、13-4の可変光移相器12-2-3、12-2-4や、VC25の前段に配置されている可変光移相器12-1-1、12-1-2に関しても同様である。また、これら可変移相器12-2-1~12-2-4、12-1-1、12-1-2は、PSK変調器の出力光の相対位相が所望の値からずれた場合に、そのズレを修正するので、もし、作製精度の向上、或いは、トリミング技術の適用等によって、これらのズレが無い場合には、省略することができる。これらの省略、置き換えに関しては、特に断らない限り以降の実施形態、実施例でも同様である。
 本変調器(M=4)は、4キャリアBPSK変調器、又は2キャリアQPSK変調器、又は1キャリア16QAM変調器として動作する。尚、キャリア間隔がシンボルレートよりも大きい場合も含めて本発明は適用可能であるため、特にOFDM方式に拘らず複数のキャリアを多重する方式を含めて一般的に説明する為、以降、特に断らなければ「キャリア」に「サブキャリア」も含むこととする。
 TILF27-1-1~27-2-2の遅延線の光路長差は、TILF27-1-1のFSRがキャリア間隔Δfの2倍に、TILF27-2-1、27-2-2のFSRがキャリア間隔Δfの4倍になるように設計されている。本変調器を4キャリアBPSK変調器として動作させる場合は、TILFの透過特性が図8Aに示す特性になるように可変光移相器12a~12fを調整する。即ち、TILF27-1-1は周波数f1,f3のキャリア光がTILF27-2-1側のポートへ、周波数f2,f4のキャリア光がTILF27-2-2側のポートへ分波するように調整する。TILF27-2-1はf1のキャリア光をPSK変調器13-1側のポートへ、f3のキャリア光をPSK変調器13-2側のポートへ分波するように調整する。TILF27-2-2はf2のキャリア光をPSK変調器13-3側のポートへ、f4のキャリア光をPSK変調器13-4側のポートへ分波するように調整する。また、VC25は、結合率が3dBになるように可変移相器12g、12hを調整しておく。この動作状態で、入力ポートにキャリア間隔がΔfである周波数がf1~f4の4波長の光をキャリアとして入力すると、入力された4つのキャリア光はこれらTILFで分波された後、4つのPSK変調器でそれぞれBPSK変調され、3dBカプラ7g、7h、及びVC25で均等に合流され、4キャリアBPSK変調信号が出力される。
 図7に示す本変調器を2キャリアQPSK変調器として動作させる場合は、TILFの透過特性が図8Bに示す特性になるように可変光移相器12a~12fを調整する。即ち、TILF27-1-1はf1のキャリア光がTILF27-2-1側のポートへ、f2のキャリア光がTILF27-2-2側のポートへ分波するように調整し、TILF27-2-1、27-2-2はそれぞれキャリア周波数f1,f2で3dBカプラとして動作するように調整する。尚、PSK変調器13-1、13-2からの出力光信号の相対位相差はπ/2になるように可変光移相器12-2-1、12-2-2を用いて適宜調整しておく。PSK変調器13-3、13-4からの出力光信号に関しても可変光移相器12-2-3、12-2-4を用いて同様に適宜調整する。このようにそれぞれの素子を動作させることで、TILF27-2-1、PSK変調器13-1、13-2、及び、3dB光カプラ7gを全体でひとつのQPSK変調器Aとして動作させ、TILF27-2-2、PSK変調器13-3、13-4、及び、3dB光カプラ7hも全体で、もうひとつのQPSK変調器Bとして動作させる。また、VC25は結合率が3dBになるように可変移相器12g、12hを調整しておく。以上のような動作調整を行うことで、本変調器はTILF27-1-1と3dB結合器となったVC25の間にQPSK変調器A、Bが並列に接続された構成と等価になる。この動作状態で、入力ポートにキャリア間隔がΔfである周波数がf1,f2の2波長の光をキャリアとして入力すると、入力された2つのキャリア光はTILF27-1-1で分波された後、この2つのQPSK変調器A,BでそれぞれQPSK変調された後に、VC25で均等に合流され、2キャリアQPSK変調信号が出力される。
 図7に示す本変調器を1キャリア16QAM変調器として動作させる場合は、TILFの透過特性が図8Cに示す特性になるように可変光移相器12a~12fを調整する。即ち、TILF27-1-1はキャリア周波数f1で2:1カプラとして動作するように、TILF27-2-1、27-2-2は同じくキャリア周波数f1で3dBカプラとして動作するように調整する。また、VC25は結合率が2:1になるように可変移相器12g、12hを調整しておく。尚、PSK変調器13-1、13-2からの出力光信号の相対位相差はπ/2になるように可変光移相器12-2-1、12-2-2を用いて適宜調整しておく。PSK変調器13-3、13-4からの出力光信号に関しても可変光移相器12-2-3、12-2-4を用いて同様に適宜調整する。このようにそれぞれの素子を動作させることで、TILF27-2-1、PSK変調器13-1、13-2、及び、3dB光カプラ7gは全体でひとつのQPSK変調器Aとして動作し、TILF27-2-2、PSK変調器13-3、13-4、及び、3dB光カプラ7hも全体で、もうひとつのQPSK変調器Bとして動作する。そして、TILF27-1-1、VC25を合わせた全体では、16QAM変調器として動作する。尚、QPSK変調器Aの出力光信号とQPSK変調器Bの出力光信号の相対位相は、通常0になるように、即ちQPSK変調器Aの出力光信号の信号点配置図上のIQ軸がQPSK変調器Bの出力光信号の信号点配置図上のIQ軸と同一になるように、可変光移相器12-1-1、12-1-2を用いて適宜調整しておく。この動作状態で入力ポートに周波数がf1の1波長の光をキャリアとして入力すると、入力されたキャリア光はTILF27-1-1で2:1に分岐された後、QPSK変調器AとQPSK変調器Bで個別にQPSK変調され、2:1カプラで合流する。これら2:1の分岐比/合流比は電力での比率であるので、電界振幅での分岐比/合流比はその平方比、即ち√2:1になる。従って、QPSK変調器A経由のQPSK信号AとQPSK変調器B経由のQPSK信号Bの電界振幅の比は、分岐における比率と合流における比率の積になるので2:1になる。こうして図4BのCに記載しているような、1キャリア16QAM変調信号が出力される。尚、今回、TILF27-1-1での分岐比とVC25は結合率を共に2:1にしているが、別の組み合せ、例えばTILF27-1-1での分岐比を4:1、VC25は結合率を3dB、でもQPSK変調器AとB経由の信号の電界振幅比は2:1になるので、1キャリア16QAM変調信号を出力することができる。然しながら、この様に分岐と合流の比率を異ならせると一般に原理損失が発生するので好ましくなく、本実施形態のように同一の比率にした方が好ましい。これは16QAM信号の合成においてだけでなく、QPSK変調器A,BにおけるQPSK信号の合成においても同様のことが言えることを付記しておく。
 以上のように、本発明の構成の変調器はTILFとVCを調整するだけで、4キャリアBPSK信号、2キャリアQPSK信号、1キャリア16QAM信号といった具合にキャリア数と変調多値数の異なる複数の変調フォーマットを切り替えることができる。BPSK信号は1シンボルで1ビットの情報が送れるので4キャリアBPSK信号は1シンボルで4ビットの情報を送ることができる。QPSK信号は1シンボルで2ビットの情報が送れるので2キャリアQPSK信号も1シンボルで4ビットの情報を送ることができ、16QAM信号は1シンボルで4ビットの情報が送れるので1キャリア16QAM信号も1シンボルで4ビットの情報を送ることができる。このようにこの3種類の変調信号はいずれも同じ伝送レートを実現する。
 前述したように、4キャリアBPSK信号は4キャリア分の帯域を占有するもののSNR劣化耐力に優れる一方、1キャリア16QAM信号は逆にSNR劣化耐力は優れないものの、帯域は1キャリア分しか占有しない。2キャリアQPSK信号はその中間である。従って、本変調器は、このような占有帯域幅とSNR劣化耐力の異なる複数の変調フォーマットの中から最適の変調フォーマットの信号を同一の構成で切り替えて発生させることができ、しかも、可変移相器による調整のみで高速に切り替えることができる。TILFとVCを調整するために駆動する光移相器の構成にもよるが、変調器で一般に用いられるLN導波路等を用いた場合はマイクロ秒以下、後述のように光移相器部分に石英系導波路を用いた場合でもミリ秒程度の切替速度を実現できる。
 尚、この切り替えにおいて、主信号であるデータ信号には一切変更を加えていない。一般に、電気データ信号のレート(シンボルレートに相当)を変更する場合、駆動回路や変調器の帯域等は最大レートに合わせた高い性能が必要となる。それに加えて、出力信号における不要なスペクトル広がりを防ぐ為に、低いシンボルレートで動作させる場合には逆に駆動信号に帯域制限をかける必要があり、電気のフィルタが別途必要になるなど、構成が複雑になる。本変調器ではデータ信号にはこのような変更を一切加えなくても、切替が可能であることから、周辺回路の構成を簡便に保つことができ、また、変調器の帯域は一定のシンボルレートにのみ合わせてデバイス設計することができる。従って、複数の変調フォーマットをサポートする光変調器を低コストに提供することができる。
 このように、本願発明の変調器は、伝送区間で定まるSNR即ち距離に応じて効率的な伝送を行う為に、変調信号フォーマットを容易に変更することができ、しかも、高速切替が可能なことから、ネットワークのトラヒック状態に応じて伝送区間を動的に切り替えるといった柔軟なネットワーク運用行う場合にも、最適なフォーマットを動的に選択することができる。
 ここで、本変調器と合わせて用いるマルチキャリア光源について説明する。図9は、マルチキャリア光源の例である。図9Aは、単MZI変調器13を用いて種光源34(波長f0)に変調をかけることで、マルチキャリアを発生させる方法である。1キャリアの場合は、変調を行わずに単純にOpen動作するバイアスをかけることで、種光源そのものをキャリア光源f1(=f0)とする。2キャリアの場合は、キャリア間隔の半分の周波数f=Δf/2でVπ電圧の約2.3倍の振幅の正弦波35をNullバイアスで加えることで、f2=f0-f、f1=f0+fの二つの周波数を発生させる。4キャリアの場合も同様の周波数でVπ電圧の約3.9倍の振幅の正弦波をNullバイアスで加えることで、f4=f0-3f、f3=f0-f、f2=f0+f、f1=f0+3fの四つの周波数を発生させる。このように駆動振幅を増すことで発生するキャリア数を増やすことができる。但し、キャリア数4を超える場合は、発生させた全てのキャリアの強度を同じにしてキャリア発生することはできないため、キャリア数4を超える場合は何らかのレベル調整機構が必要となる。
 図9Bは、単純に波長可変光源37a~37dを並べて光カプラ38により出力をまとめる単純な構成である。必要なキャリア数に応じて光源を発光させることで、出力するキャリア数を変える。この構成では、最大キャリア数分の光源が必要になる点がデメリットであるが、キャリア間隔が不等間隔の場合にも対応できる点がメリットである。
 次に、上述の本発明の変調器の他の構成を説明する際に構成のポイントを分かり易くする為に、構成を抽象化して示した図により、再度構成/動作を説明する。上記M=4の場合の抽象構成を図10に示す。本発明の変調器は大きく分けて、分配部28、光変調器アレイ29、集約部30からなる。各TILF27-1-1~27-2-2の光路長差は、ΔL=c/(M・Δf);ここでcは光速;Δfはキャリア周波数間隔;とすると、図10の各TILFのカッコ内に記載したようにTILF27-1-1で2ΔL、TILF27-2-1、27-2-2でΔLになっている。第一の実施形態では、分配部はTILF27-1-1~27-2-2がツリー状に多段に接続された構成になっており、光変調器アレイは、アレイ状に並んだMZI型のPSK変調器(PSK)13-1~13-4で構成され、集約部はVC25-1-1~25-2-2が逆ツリー状に多段に接続された構成になっている。但し、上述の説明では初段のVC25-1-1、25-1-2はそれぞれ通常の3dB光カプラ7g、7hになっている。
 この変調器の、分配部、集約部の各素子の動作の組み合せによって、図11の表に示すように3種類の変調フォーマットの信号を切り替えて発生することができる。尚、表の中において、各符号の名称TILF1-1~2-2、VC1-1~2-2、PSK1~4は図10の中で示している名称で記載している。第一の実施形態での説明では、2キャリアQPSK信号を発生させる場合、キャリア信号が隣接したチャンネル(ch)を使用する場合を説明したが、本変調器は、それ以外にキャリア信号が1chスキップした2ch間隔のキャリア信号に対して2キャリアQPSK信号を発生させることもできる。その場合、周波数f1、f3に対して、TILF27-1-1は3dBカプラとして動作するように設定し、TILF27-2-1、27-2-2は分波器として動作するように設定し、PSK13-1とPSK13-3で周波数f1のQPSK信号を発生させ、PSK13-2とPSK13-4で周波数f3のQPSK信号を発生させる。また、1キャリア16QAM信号を発生させる場合も、詳細には2通りの動作方法がある。動作1は上述で説明した動作であるが、これ以外に動作2がある。動作2では周波数f1に対して、TILF27-1-1,VC24-1-1は3dBカプラとして動作させ、TILF27-2-1、27-2-2、VC24-2-1、24-2-2は2:1カプラとして動作させることで、PSK13-1と13-3で電界振幅2のQPSK信号を発生させ、PSK13-2と13-4で電界振幅1のQPSK信号を発生させて、全体で16QAM信号を発生させる。
 図11の表を見て分かるように、1キャリア16QAM信号の発生方法が動作1のみの場合は、VC25-2-1、25-2-2は、3dBとしてしか動作しないので第一の実施形態での構成のように通常の3dB固定カプラでも良い。一方、動作2のみの場合は、VC25-1-1は、3dBとしてしか動作しないので通常の3dB固定カプラとしても良い。
 尚、図11の表では、全てのPSK変調器を駆動する場合のみを示しているが、一部のPSK変調器のみの駆動で使用することももちろん可能である。即ち、変調器の動作としては4キャリアBPSK信号を発生させる状態にしておいて、例えば、入力するキャリア光はf1のみにし、駆動するPSK変調器はPSK13-1のみにすることで1キャリアBPSK信号を発生させることも可能である。同様に、2キャリアBPSK信号、3キャリアBPSK信号を発生させることも可能である。また同様の考えで、1キャリアQPSK信号を発生させることも可能である。この場合は例えば、変調器を隣接ch動作の2キャリアQPSK信号を発生させる状態にしておいて、入力するキャリア光はf1のみにし、駆動するPSK変調器は、PSK13-1、PSK13-2のみにすることで、1キャリアQPSK信号を発生させることが可能となる。但し、これらの変形動作モードの場合は、当然のことながらキャリアを減らした分、伝送レートは減少する。以降の実施形態でも、特に例示しないが、キャリア数を減らした変形動作モードも含まれることを予め断っておく。
 次にM=8の場合の本願発明の変調器構成を図12に、各種信号フォーマットを発生するための動作状態の一覧を図13A、B、およびCの表に示す。尚、表の中において、各符号の名称TILF1-1~3-4、VC1-1~3-4、PSK1~8は、図12の中で示している名称で記載している。図13A、B、およびCで1つの表を示す。構成、及び動作の考え方はM=4の場合と同様である。本変調器では、8キャリアBPSK信号、4キャリアQPSK信号、2キャリア16QAM信号、1キャリア256QAM信号の4種類の信号を切り替えて発生することができる。本構成でも、動作モードの限定を行えば、一部のVCは通常の3dB固定カプラに置き換えることができる。
 このように、M=2;n=1、2、・・・の自然数、の場合の構成については、上述のn=2、3での構成の考えを拡張して考えることで、容易に一般化することができる。
<第2の実施形態:Mが2の累乗以外の場合>
 次に、Mが2の累乗以外の場合、例えばM=12の場合の構成について図14に示す。本構成はM=16の構成を基に一部の構成要素を省いた構成になっている。具体的には、4段目のTILF27-4-1~27-4-4、及び1段目のVC25-4-1~25-4-4がM=16ではそれぞれ8個並ぶが本構成では4個になっており、また、光変調アレイも16個から12個に削減した構成になっている。このように一部の要素を減らす構成とすることで、対応するキャリア数も減ることとなる。尚、当然のことながら図中の各TILFの光路長差の基本単位ΔLは、前述の式でM=16とした時の値である。具体的な各種信号フォーマットを発生するための動作状態の例を図15AおよびBの表に示す。図15AおよびBで1つの表を示す。尚、表の中において、各符号の名称TILF/VCの1-1~4-4、PSK1~12は図14の中で示している名称で記載している。本変調器では、12キャリアBPSK信号、6キャリアQPSK信号、3キャリア16QAM信号、2キャリア64QAM信号、1キャリア4096QAM信号の5種類の信号を切り替えて発生することができる。尚、表では1キャリア4096QAM信号に関しては省略している。また、第1の実施形態で説明したように、一部のフォーマットでは複数の動作モードがある場合があるが、本表では代表的な動作モードのみ記載している。
 このように、M=2の構成を基に一部の構成要素を省いた構成とすることで、Mが2の累乗以外の変調器を構成することができる。
<分配部の各種構成>
 次に、分配部の様々な構成について説明する。以下、M=4の場合で具体的に示すが、M=4以外の場合でも基本的には同様であることを予め断っておく。
<分配部形態1:単純MZI型>
 図16Aは、分配部形態1として、第1の実施形態;M=4での分配部の構成を改めて詳しく説明した図である。TILF27-1-1~27-2-2のそれぞれは2個の2入力2出力の3dB光カプラ7a~7fに可変光移相器12a~12f付きの遅延線が挟まれたMZI構成になっている。TILF27-1-1の遅延線の光路長差は2ΔL、TILF27-2-1、27-2-2での光路長差はΔLになっている。分離するキャリアの周波数間隔がΔfの場合、ΔL=c/(M・Δf)である。cは光速である。ここで、光カプラ7a~7fは全て2入力2出力の構成で、入力側光カプラの一方の入力を未接続としたが、入力側の光カプラは1入力2出力の構成としても良い。また、光カプラの具体的な実現方法は、方向性結合器やマルチモード導波路構成、又は、波長無依存カプラ(WINC)と呼ばれる一種の干渉計など、いずれの方法を用いても良く、1入力2出力構成の場合はY分岐を用いても良い。以降で述べる形態に関しても同様である。
 図16Bは、理想的な方向性結合器を用いた場合のTILF27-1-1単体の計算透過特性である。同様に図16Cは、TILF27-2-1、27-2-2の単体の計算透過特性である。ここで、各可変光移相器は、φ=0、ψ=π/2、ψ=0に設定している。図17は、分配部全体の計算特性である。図17Aは4キャリア時の特性であり、φ=0、ψ=π/2、ψ=0に設定している。図17Bはキャリア信号が隣接した2キャリア時の特性であり、φ=0、ψ=0、ψ=π/2に設定している。図17Cはキャリア信号が1chスキップした2ch間隔の2キャリア時の特性であり、φ=π/2、ψ=π/2、ψ=π/2に設定している。図17Dは1キャリア時の動作1の場合の特性であり、φ=2・arctan(1/√2)≒0.39π、ψ=0、ψ=0に設定している。図17Eは1キャリア時の動作2の場合の特性であり、φ=π/2、ψ=ψ=π/2-2・arctan(1/√2)≒0.11πに設定している。図中の矢印線は、各モードにおいて用いるキャリア信号の周波数位置を模式的に示したものである。ここに示すように、各動作状態にて各キャリアが、分波、乃至は、適切な分岐比で分岐されることが分かる。
 尚、図16B、C、図17の各特性を見て分かるように、分配部の特性は周期特性を持っている。従って、各キャリアの配置は必ずしも隣接して並んでいる必要はなく、周期的に離れた周波数に配置しても良い。例えば、図17Aにおいて、f2のキャリアは193.5THzに配置されているが、本設計での周期200GHzで離れた193.7THz、193.3THz等に配置しても良い。
<分配部形態2:ラティス型>
 図18は、分配部形態2として、分配部のTILFをラティス型の干渉計で構成した例である。ラティス型の干渉計は、非特許文献4、5で開示されているように、MZIを多段にラティス状に接続した構成となっており、各段のMZIの位相状態、及びカプラの結合率を個別に設定できることから、ラティスの段数を増やせば増やすほど透過特性の設計自由度が大きくなるという利点がある。一方、回路長がラティスの段数に応じて長くなる点が欠点である。ここでは、分配部形態1の単純MZI型との特徴の差を簡単に示す為に、ラティス段数が2段の例で動作を説明する。図中にも記載しているが、TILF27-1-1の光路長差は、入力側に近い1段目がΔL、出力側に近い2段目が2ΔLであり、TILF27-2-1、27-2-2の光路長差は1段目が2ΔL、2段目が4ΔLである。尚、光路長差の基本単位ΔLは、単純MZIの場合と同じである。
 図19A、図19Bに図18の構成パラメータを用いた場合のTILF27-1-1単体及び、TILF27-2-1、27-2-2の単体の計算透過特性を示す。ここでφ=π/2、ψ=2πに設定している。図19Aを見て分かるように、ラティス型を用いた場合は、隣接したチャンネルを組にして消光させることができる。単純MZI型では、このような特性を得ることができず、必ず消光chと透過chが交互に並ぶ特性となるため、TILFの接続順番はFSRの小さい順、即ちΔLが大きい順、になる。然しながら、ラティス型を用いた場合は、消光chと透過chの並びを変えることができるため、TILFの接続の配置を入れ替えることができる。図18の構成では、TILF27-1-1のFSRが4Δf、TILF27-2-1、27-2-2のFSRは2Δfとなっており、FSRの大きいTILFを最初の段に配置している。
 分配部全体の計算透過特性を、図19C、D、Eに示す。図19Cは4キャリア時の特性であり、φ=π/2、ψ=2πに設定し、3つのTILFを分波器として動作させている。図19Dはキャリア信号が1chスキップした2ch間隔の2キャリア時の特性であり、φ=π/2、ψ=πに設定し、TILF27-1-1を分波器、TILF27-2-1、27-2-2を3dBカプラとして動作させている。図19Eは1キャリア時の動作1の場合の特性であり、φ=0.095π、ψ=πに設定し、TILF27-1-1を2:1カプラ、TILF27-2-1、27-2-2を3dBカプラとして動作させている。
 尚、本構成では、3つのTILFを全てラティス型で構成したが、例えば、TILF27-1-1はラティス型、TILF27-2-1、27-2-2は単純MZI型として混在させてももちろん良い。
<分配部形態3:FFT型>
 図20は、分配部形態3として、分配部を非特許文献6に記載のM分波のFFT型干渉計で構成した例である。FFT型の干渉計は1入力M分岐カプラ39に、ΔLずつ遅延差を持つM本の遅延線アレイ40、及び2入力2出力カプラ7d~7gと可変光移相器12a~12hを編みこんで接続構成した多段の可変M×Mカプラ41からなる。図20では1入力M分岐カプラ39は1入力2出力光カプラ7a~7cを多段に接続して構成しているが、1入力M出力のMMIカプラ等を用いて構成しても良い。尚、遅延線部の光路長差の基本単位ΔLは、単純MZIの場合と同じである。
 また、M=4以外、即ち、M=2において、n=2以外における多段可変M×Mカプラの構成は、以下のようになる。2入力2出力光カプラがn段、各段に2n-1個配置される。k段目j番(kは1~nの整数、jは1~2n-1の自然数)の光カプラは、X番目の経路とY番目の経路を結合する。ここで、

ただし、(j-1)div2n-kと(j-1)mod2n-kはそれぞれ、(j-1)を2n-kで割った商と、余りを表している。また、各段の間には各経路の相対位相を調整する光位相調節器が配置される。
 本構成は、遅延線部が一段で済む為、前述の単純MZI型やラティス型のTILFを多段に接続した構成に比べて小型になるという利点がある。特にMが大きくなればなるほど利点が大きくなる。一方、TILFを多段に接続した構成に比べて可変光移相器の数が多くなり、制御がやや煩雑になる点と消費電力が大きくなる点が欠点である。
 本構成は単純MZI型の構成と異なってみえるが、光カプラ、遅延線、可変光移相器といった要素の特性の数式を用いて全体の透過特性を数式で表すと、両者の特性は同じ式で記述される。従って、基本的には単純MZI型と同じ特性が得られる。本構成の計算透過特性を図21に示す。図21Aは4キャリア時の特性であり、φ=0、ψ=π/2、ψ=0に設定している。図21Bはキャリア信号が隣接した2キャリア時の特性であり、φ=0、ψ=0、ψ=π/2に設定している。図21Cはキャリア信号が1chスキップした2ch間隔の2キャリア時の特性であり、φ=π/2、ψ=π/2、ψ=π/2に設定している。図21Dは1キャリア時の動作1の場合の特性であり、

 このように、本構成は単純MZI型と同じ特性を得ることができるが、可変光移相器の数が多く自由度が高い為、同じ特性を実現する為の可変光移相器の駆動パターンが複数存在する。例えば、図21Eはφ=φ=ψ=π/4、φ=φ=ψ=-π/4、ψ=ψ=0とした時の計算特性であるが、図21Bと全く同じ特性になっている。これは、各経路の相対位相差を見てみると、φ、φの位相設定π/4は、ψ、ψに移すことができ、同様に、φ、φの位相設定-π/4は、ψ、ψに移すことができるので、上記の位相設定は、φ=φ=φ=φ=ψ=ψ=0、ψ=π/4、ψ=-π/4と同じであり、この設定はφ=0、ψ=0、ψ=π/2と同じであるためである。このように、本構成では複数の可変光移相器の駆動パターンで同じ特性を得ることができる。
<分配部形態4:要素のスイッチ切替型>
 以上は、干渉計フィルタの干渉条件を変えることで、分配部を分波回路や可変分岐比光カプラとして切り替えて動作させる構成例を示してきたが、次にこれらとは別の考え方の構成方法を分配部形態4として図22に示す。本図はM=4の場合を示している。本分配部は、各箇所においてインターリーブフィルター(ILF)と可変光カプラ(VC)を光スイッチで選択できるよう構成されている。各ILFとVCを図11の表の動作に倣って単純に切り替えて使用することで、分配部の可変動作を実現する。分配部形態1~3の干渉計型フィルタのように細かな干渉条件の調整が不要になる点が利点であるが、光スイッチが必要となるので全体構成が複雑になる点が欠点である。尚、本構成も動作モードの限定によって常に結合率が3dBになるVCについては、VCを単純な3dBカプラに置き換えてももちろん良い。尚、光スイッチには、On/Off切り替えタイプの構成でも良いし、或いは、可変光カプラと同じ構成を用いて、中間領域を用いずに100%透過、0%透過の動作点を用いるようにしても良い。
<分配部形態5:多入力のスイッチ切替型>
 更に別の構成を分配部形態5として図23に示す。本図もM=4の場合を示している。本構成では、可変光カプラ(VC)がツリー状に多段に接続され、且つ、各VCのいずれか一方の出力に2入力1出力光スイッチが挿入され、この光スイッチのVCが接続されていない側のポートが、分配部の入力ポートになっている。従って、初段目のVCの入力ポートと合わせてM入力(本図ではM=4)の回路になっている。本構成を分配部に用いる場合は、マルチキャリア光源は用いずにこの4入力に個別のキャリア光源を別々に接続する。4キャリア時は、4つのキャリア光源をそれぞれの波長で発光させ、全ての光スイッチを分配部の入力ポート側、即ち各キャリア光源側を選択するように切り替える。VC25-1-1、25-2-2も経路選択スイッチとして用い、入力ポート3からの光が出力ポート3に導かれるように設定する。同様にVC25-2-1も経路選択スイッチとして用い、入力ポート2からの光が出力ポート2に導かれるように設定する。2キャリア時は、入力ポート2、3のキャリア光源を発光させ、光スイッチ43-1-1のみ分配部の入力ポート側を選択するように設定し、光スイッチ43-2-1、43-2-2はVC側を選択するように設定する。VC25-1-1は経路選択スイッチとして用い、入力ポート3からの光がVC25-2-2に導かれるように設定する。VC25-2-1、25-2-2は3dBカプラとして動作するように設定する。1キャリア時は、入力ポート3のみキャリア光源を発光させ、全ての光スイッチがVC側を選択するように設定する。VC25-1-1は2:1カプラとして、VC25-2-1、25-2-2は3dBカプラとして動作するように設定する。このように動作させることで、各変調フォーマットを切り替えることができる。尚、本構成での光スイッチについても、On/Off切り替えタイプの構成を用いても良いし、或いは、2入力1出力可変光カプラと同じ構成を用いて、中間領域を用いずに100%透過、0%透過の動作点を用いるようにしても良い。
 本形態では、分波器を用いない為、各キャリア光の波長をそれぞれ任意に設定することができるという利点がある。一方、光源が複数必要であると共に、これら複数の光源を複数の入力ポートにそれぞれ接続しなくてはならず、光源を含めた構成としては複雑な構成になる点が欠点である。
<分配部形態6:可変カプラ内蔵単純MZI型>
 更に別の構成を分配部形態6として説明する。全体構成は分配部形態1、2と同じであるが、各TILFの構成がこれらとは異なる。本形態でのTILFの構成を図24Aに示す。本形態でのTILFは、2個の可変光カプラに可変光移相器付きの遅延線が挟まれたMZI構成になっている。各可変カプラは、本図では、2個の3dB光カプラを2個の可変光移相器を介して接続したMZI構成としたが、別の構成でも構わない。遅延線による2本の干渉アームの光路長差は、本図ではΔL=c/(M・Δf)の場合で図示しているが、M=4の場合のTILF27-1-1では2ΔL、TILF27-2-1、27-2-2ではΔLとなる。M=4以外も含めた一般構成では、n段目のTILF、即ちTILF27-(n)-(X)の光路長差はM・ΔL/2になる。
 本TILFを分波器として動作させる場合は、可変光カプラ25-1、25-2の結合率を3dBにし、可変光カプラを通常の3dBカプラとして動作させる。遅延線部分の可変光移相器の調整に関しては、前述の分配部形態1の時と同様に調整することで、所望の光キャリアを出力8-1と8-2へ分波する。本TILFを3dB光カプラ、或いは2:1光カプラのように任意の分岐比の分岐器として動作させる場合は、可変光カプラ1を遅延線部分の短アーム側か長アーム側のいずれか一方のみに光が導かれるように動作させ、可変光カプラ25-2を結合率が所望の分岐比、例えば3dBや2:1、になるよう動作させる。或いは、可変光カプラ25-2を結合率が0%又は100%結合になるよう動作させ、可変光カプラ25-1を結合率が所望の分岐比、例えば3dBや2:1、になるよう動作させる。この様に可変光カプラの動作を選ぶことによって、本TILFを分波器として動作させたり、所望の分岐比の分岐器として動作させたりすることができる。尚、分岐動作時の分岐比が3dBしかない場合は、可変光カプラ1又は可変光カプラ2のいずれかを固定の3dBカプラに置き換えることができる。
 本形態は、分配部形態1と分配部形態4の構成の考え方を合わせたような形態になっており、メリット/デメリットもこの2形態の中間に位置する。
 図24Bは本形態の特性を更に向上させた構成である。図24Aの構成では、分岐器として動作させる場合に、可変光カプラ25-1若しくは25-2を0%又は100%結合になるよう動作させるが、一般に、この様な干渉を利用した可変光カプラの場合、作製上の不完全性により、完全に100%或いは0%で動作させることは難しく、所謂、消光比としては30dB程度に留まってしまう。そこで、図24Bの構成では、遅延線部分の短アーム側か長アーム側のいずれか一方に、消光比を向上させる為のOnOffスイッチ55を設けている。OnOffスイッチの構成は、本図では可変光カプラと同じように、2個の3dB光カプラを2個の可変光移相器を介して接続したMZI構成としたが、別の構成でも構わない。
 本TILFを分波器として動作させる場合は、前述の動作に加えて、OnOffスイッチを透過状態にする。本TILFを任意の分岐比の分岐器として動作させる場合は、可変光カプラ25-1をOnOffスイッチ55が設けられていないアーム側に光が導かれるように動作させ、OnOffスイッチを遮断状態にし、可変光カプラ25-2を結合率が所望の分岐比、例えば3dBや2:1、になるよう動作させる。分岐動作では、OnOffスイッチ側の経路に光が伝搬しないように動作させるが、本構成では可変光カプラ25-1とOnOffスイッチの2箇所で伝搬光を遮断することにあるので、図24Aの構成と比べると2倍の消光比を得ることができる。尚、分岐動作時の分岐比が3dBしかない場合は、可変光カプラ25-2を固定の3dBカプラに置き換えることができる。
<分配部形態7:可変カプラ内蔵ラティス型>
 更に別の構成を分配部形態7として説明する。本形態でのTILFの構成を図25Aに示す。本形態は、基本的には分配部形態2に分配部形態6の考えを適用したものであり、各TILFの構成が単MZIをベースとした構成ではなく、ラティス型干渉計をベースとした構成になっている点が分配部形態6での考えと異なる。本形態でのTILFは、可変光カプラと可変光移相器付きの遅延線が交互に接続された構成になっている。
 本形態は、基本的には分配部形態2に分配部形態6の考えを適用したものであるので、メリット、デメリットはこれらに上げているものと基本的には同じである。尚、図25Aが通常タイプで、図25Bは、分岐動作時に不要経路からのクロストークが小さくなる高性能版である。
 動作の考え方も基本的には分配部形態2、6から容易に類推できるので、ここでは図25Bの構成のみ、その動作に関して簡単に述べる。また、合分波動作は分配部形態2でのTILF27-1-1の動作を想定して説明するが、TILF27-2-1やTILF27-2-2の動作に関しても、各遅延線の光路長差や結合率を読み替えて適用すれば良い。
 本TILFを分波器として動作させる場合は、可変光カプラ25-1、25-2、25-3を結合率がそれぞれ3dB、3dB、14.6%となるように動作させ、各OnOffスイッチ55-1、55-2を透過状態にする。遅延線部分の可変光移相器の調整に関しては、前述の分配部形態2の時と同様に調整することで、所望の光キャリアを出力8-1と8-2へ分波する。本TILFを任意の分岐比の分岐器として動作させる場合は、可変光カプラ25-1、25-2をOnOffスイッチ55-1、55-2が設けられていないアーム側に光が導かれるように動作させ、各OnOffスイッチを遮断状態にし、可変光カプラ25-3を結合率が所望の分岐比になるよう動作させる。尚、分波動作時に可変光カプラ25-3の結合率が3dBで、且つ、分岐動作時の分岐比が3dBしかない場合は、可変光カプラ25-3を固定の3dBカプラに置き換えることができる。
<分配部形態8:可変カプラ内蔵FFT型>
 更に別の構成を分配部形態8として説明する。M=4における、本分配部形態の構成を図26に示す。本形態は、分配部形態3に分配部形態6の考えを適用したものであり、分配部形態3のFFT型干渉計において、一部又は全ての光カプラを可変光カプラに置き換えている。また、分配部形態6で説明したように、分岐動作時の不要経路からのクロストークを低減する為に、FFT型干渉計の遅延線部分にOnOff光スイッチを挿入している。もし、クロストーク特性の向上が必要なければ、本OnOff光スイッチは省略することができる。本形態は、基本的には分配部形態3に分配部形態6の考えを適用したものであるので、メリット、デメリットはこれらに上げているものと基本的には同じである。
 本形態の分配部を4キャリア時に必要な分波器として動作させる場合は、全ての可変光カプラ25-1-1~25-4-2を結合率がそれぞれ3dBとなるように動作させ、各OnOffスイッチ55-1~55-4を透過状態にする。遅延線部分の可変光移相器の調整に関しては、前述の分配部形態3の時と同様に調整することで、各光キャリアをポート1~4へ分波する。
 本形態の分配部を隣接2キャリア時に必要な分波器及び分岐器の組み合わせとして動作させる場合は、可変光カプラ25-1-1、25-3-2、25-4-1、25-4-2を結合率が3dBになるように動作させ、可変光カプラ25-2-1、25-2-2をそれぞれ遅延光路長差2ΔL、0のアーム側に光が導かれるように動作させ、OnOffスイッチ55-1、55-3を遮断状態に、55-2、55-4を透過状態にする。尚、可変光カプラ25-3-1の動作状態はいずれであっても良い。この様に動作させることで、途中に可変光カプラ25-2-1、25-2-2が入るが、可変光カプラ25-1-1と遅延光路長差2ΔLと0の干渉アームと可変光カプラ25-3-2で、遅延光路長差2ΔLのILFが構成されるので、φ、φを調整する可変光移相器を適切に動作させることで、光キャリアf1、f2を分波することができる。分波された光キャリアf1、f2はそれぞれ可変光カプラ25-4-1、25-4-2で3dB分岐される。従って、分配部形態3における隣接2キャリア時の動作と同じ動作を実現する。同じ全体動作結果を得る為の各可変光カプラ、各OnOffスイッチの動作には他の組み合せもあることは容易に分かるが、ここでは1例の提示に留める。
 本形態の分配部を1キャリア時に必要な分岐器として動作させる場合は、可変光カプラ25-1-1、25-2-2を遅延光路長差0のアーム側に光が導かれるように動作させ、可変光カプラ25-3-2、25-4-1、25-4-2を結合率がそれぞれ2:1、3dB、3dBになるように動作させ、OnOffスイッチ55-1~55-3を遮断状態に、55-4を透過状態にする。尚、可変光カプラ25-2-1、25-3-1の動作状態はいずれであっても良い。この様に動作させることで、入力された光キャリアを2:2:1:1の比率で分岐することができる。従って、分配部形態3における1キャリア時の動作と同じ動作を実現する。本動作でも、同じ全体動作結果を得る為の各可変光カプラ、各OnOffスイッチの動作には上記とは異なる他の組み合せもあることは容易に分かる。
 尚、上述の動作組み合せの場合は、可変光カプラ25-3-1、25-4-1、25-4-2は常に3dB動作であるから、固定の3dB光カプラに置き換えることができる。また、OnOffスイッチ55-4は、常に透過状態であるから、省くことが出来る。
<集約部の各種構成>
 次に、集約部の様々な構成について説明する。以下、M=4の場合で具体的に示すが、M=4以外の場合でも基本的には同様であることを予め断っておく。
<集約部形態1:可変カプラ型>
 図27は、集約部形態1である可変カプラ型集約部の構成図である。本構成は、第1の実施形態での集約部の構成を一般化した構成になっている。可変光カプラ(VC)が逆ツリー状に多段に接続され、集約部の入力ポートと可変カプラの間や各可変カプラの間には可変光移相器が配置されている。この様な構成で集約部の各入力ポートからの光を任意の比率で、且つ任意の相対位相関係で出力ポートに合流させることができる。
 本構成も動作モードの限定によって、可変動作が必要なくなるVCに関しては単純な3dBカプラに置き換えてももちろん良い。また、上記の各可変光移相器は、集約部の各入力ポートからの光の相対位相を調整することが目的なので、初段の可変光移相器12-2-1~12-2-4のみを残して、残りの可変光移相器12-1-1、12-1-2は省略することが可能である。但し、各段に可変光移相器を設けた方が、相対位相の調整は行い易い。上記の各可変光移相器の別の省略の方法としては、可変光移相器12-1-1と12-1-2は対となってVC25-2-1からの光とVC25-2-2からの光の相対位相を調整するので、いずれか一方を省くことができる。可変光移相器12-2-1と12-2-2や、可変光移相器12-2-3と12-2-4に関しても同様である。また、集約部の入力ポートと可変カプラの間の可変光移相器12-2-1~12-2-4も、光変調器側に可変位相機能を設ければ、省略することが可能である。更には、これら可変移相器は、光変調器アレイの出力光の相対位相が所望の値からずれた場合に、そのズレを修正するためのものであるので、もし、作製精度の向上、或いは、トリミング技術の適用等によって、これらのズレが無い場合には、これら可変移相器を省略することができる。
 尚、各可変光カプラ(VC)は、例えば、2入力2出力の3dB光カプラと2入力1出力の3dB光カプラを2個の可変光移相器を介して接続したMZI構成になっている。尚、2入力1出力の3dB光カプラは2入力2出力の3dB光カプラを用いて一方の出力を未接続にして代用しても良い。また、3dB光カプラの具体的な実現方法は、方向性結合器やマルチモード導波路構成、又は、波長無依存カプラ(WINC)と呼ばれる一種の干渉計など、いずれの方法を用いても良い。また、この各可変光カプラはMZI構成だけでなく、方向性結合器の結合部の屈折率を変えることで結合器としての結合率を変える構成など他の構成を用いても良い。以降の形態に関しても同様である。
<集約部形態2:可変減衰器型>
 図28は、集約部形態2の構成である。本形態は、可変カプラ型(集約部形態1)の可変カプラ部を、可変減衰器と2入力1出力光カプラの組み合せに置き換えたものになっている。本形態でも可変減衰器の減衰量を調整することで集約部の各入力ポートからの光を任意の比率で、且つ任意の相対位相関係で出力ポートに合流させることができる。但し、減衰によって比率を変えているので、等比率での合流以外の動作では原理的な損失が発生する。可変カプラ型(集約部形態1)ではこのような原理損失は発生しない。一方、本構成では、集約部の各入力ポートに対して個別に可変減衰器が備えられていることになるので、集約部の各入力ポートからの光のレベル調整が行いやすいという利点がある。
<集約部形態3:可変減衰器付き可変カプラ型>
 図29は、集約部形態3の構成である。本構成は、可変カプラ型と可変減衰器型を合わせた構成になっている。可変カプラにより合流比を調整することで原理損失を抑えると同時に、集約部の各入力ポートからの光のレベル調整も行いやすくなっている。欠点は、回路の規模が大きくなることである。
 また、本図では可変減衰器45-3-1~45-3-4の後に光モニタ46-1~46-4を設けた構成を示している。このように光モニタを適宜備えることで各ポートからの信号状態を把握しながら各種の調整を行うことができる。光モニタに関しては、形態1、2等の他の形態においても同様に備えることができることは言うまでも無い。
<集約部形態4:単段M×1可変カプラ型>
 図30は、集約部形態4の構成である。本構成は、FFT型分配部のΔLを0とし、入出力を入れ替えた構成になっている。公知の干渉原理により、可変移相器をφ=ψ=ψ=π/2に設定すると、各入力ポート1、2、3、4から透過比率は1:1:1:1になる。同様に、φ=π/2、ψ=ψ=2・arctan(1/√2)≒0.39πに設定すると2:1:2:1の合流比に、φ=2・arctan(1/√2)≒0.39π、ψ=ψ=π/2に設定すると2:2:1:1の合流比になる。この様に、可変移相器の設定によって、所望の合流比を実現できるので、本構成も前述の集約部形態と同様に本発明の集約部として用いることができる。
<集約部形態5:高調波カットフィルタ付き>
 ここまでの集約部の構成は、細かな構成は異なるものの、基本的には光変調アレイ部からの光信号を合流させている。もし、各キャリアの信号が高いレベルの高調波成分を持つ場合、即ち大きなサイドローブスペクトルをもつ場合、このサイドローブが隣接キャリアに対してクロストークになる可能性がある。通常、このサイドローブはそれほど大きくないので問題にならないが、光変調器アレイの周波数特性が良すぎ、且つ、駆動信号波形の矩形度が良すぎるなどの条件が揃うとサイドローブが大きくなるので問題になる。そこでこうした問題が生じた場合にこの影響を回避する手段として、各光変調器の後段に高調波をカットする光バンドパスフィルタ(OBPF)を備えることが考えられる。然しながら、この様なOBPFはそれなりの回路面積を必要とするので、単純に実装した場合、チップサイズが相当大きくなる。
 ここでは、幾つかの工夫を入れることで回路規模を抑制してOBPFを実装することを考える。先ず、光信号の高調波が問題になるのは一つ目のサイドローブであり、通常、二つ目、三つ目とより高次になるにつれサイドローブの強度は急激に小さくなる。従って、本願発明の変調器の場合、隣接キャリアに対するクロストークのみを考慮するOBPFで十分である。よって、OBPFはILFのように隣接チャンネルが減衰できるフィルタで良い。ILFでは1チャンネル置きに透過帯域が繰り返されるので、偶数チャンネルと奇数チャンネルで一つずつILFを用意すれば良く、キャリア毎にILFを用意する必要が無くなる。
 M=4の場合の具体的な構成例を図31に示す。図31の構成は、集約部形態1の構成をベースに最終段の可変カプラ25-1-1の前に高調波除去フィルタ56-1、56-2として1入力1出力のTILFを配置した構成になっている。本図では、TILFは非特許文献5に示されているようなラティス型TILFの構成にして透過率特性の矩形度が良い構成とした。ラティス型TILFの段数をここでは2段としているが、より矩形度の高い透過特性を得たいなどの要望があれば、より段数の多いラティス型TILFを採用してももちろん良い。本図でのラティス型TILFの各段遅延部の光路長差や光カプラの結合率は、分岐部形態2のTILF27-2-1と同じにしてあるので、透過特性も同じになり、ψ=2πの時、図19Bに示す特性になる。尚、ψ=2πの時は、図19Bにおいてポート1と2が入れ替わった特性になる。
 本集約部の基本的な動作は、集約部形態1と同じであり、それに高調波除去フィルタとしてのTILFの動作が以下のように加わる。4キャリア時は、キャリア周波数f1、f3の信号光が高調波除去フィルタ56-1を通り、キャリア周波数f2、f4の信号光が高調波除去フィルタ56-2を通る。従って、高調波除去フィルタ56-1はf1、f3の信号光を透過、f2、f4の信号光を遮断するようにψ=2πで動作させ、高調波除去フィルタ56-2はf1、f3の信号光を遮断、f2、f4の信号光を透過するようにψ=0で動作させる。2キャリア時は、キャリア周波数f1の信号光が高調波除去フィルタ56-1を通り、キャリア周波数f2の信号光が高調波除去フィルタ56-2を通る。従って、高調波除去フィルタは4キャリア時と同じように動作させる。1キャリア時は高調波除去フィルタ56-1、56-2共にキャリア周波数f1の信号光が通るので、高調波除去フィルタ56-1、56-2共にf1の信号光を透過するように、即ちψ=ψ=2πで動作させる。
 TILFは図19Bに示すように繰り返し特性を持つ為、Mが4より大きい場合でも、図31に示すように最終段の可変カプラ25-1-1の前に偶数チャンネルと奇数チャンネルでそれぞれ一つずつTILF56-1、56-2を配置すれば良いことが分かる。従って、Mが大きい場合においても比較的小さい回路面積で実装が可能であることが本構成の大きなメリットであることが分かる。
<集約部形態6:分配部構成を流用した構成>
 ここでは、分配部形態の入出力ポートを入れ替えた形態を集約部として用いることを考える。この場合、分配部形態で分岐/分波の機能は、それぞれ合流/合波になる。集約部は変調された光が通る為、透過特性は波長無依存の特性であることが望ましい。上述の集約部形態1~4で用いている可変光カプラや可変減衰器等は基本的にはほぼ波長無依存であるので、波長依存性が問題になることは無く使用できる。一方、分配部の構成は光路長差を持った干渉計が入っているので、これを集約部として用いた場合には、波長依存性が問題になる可能性があり、適用可否の吟味が必要である。
 分配部形態4、及び、分配部形態6~8の構成を、入出力ポートを入れ替えて集約部として用いた場合は、同一波長のキャリアを集約/合流させる時には、実質的に可変カプラを用いることになるので、波長無依存で任意の合流比で信号光を合流させることができる。異波長のキャリアを集約/合波させる時には、TILFを用いて合波させる事になるので、これも問題ない。集約部形態1~4では、この合波させる場合にカプラで合流させていたことによって合流原理損失が生じていたが、この分配部形態4や分配部形態6~8の入出力ポートを入れ替えた構成では、TILFでの合波になり、原理損失が生じない。従って、原理損失が無い点はこの分配部形態4や分配部形態6~8において入出力ポートを入れ替えた構成におけるメリットとなる。また、TILFによる合波であるので、集約部形態5で述べたように信号光の高調波をカットする効果が得られるのも大きなメリットである。デメリットは、集約部形態1~4と比べると構成がやや複雑になる点である。
 同様に、分配部形態1~3において入出力ポートを入れ替えた構成では、異波長のキャリアを集約/合波させる時にはILFを用いて合波させる事になるので問題ない。しかしながら、同一波長のキャリアを集約/合流させる時には、図17C~17B、19D~19E、21B~21Eの透過特性に示されるように、ILFの透過特性がキャリア周波数付近では大きな波長依存性を持つので、スペクトル幅をもつ変調信号にとっては左右非対称のスペクトル歪みを受けることになり、基本的には用いることができない。然しながら、扱うキャリア光の周波数間隔がスペクトル幅よりも十分広い場合、即ち、シンボルレートがキャリア光の周波数間隔よりも十分小さい場合は、この透過特性の波長依存性は相対的に緩やかになり問題にならなくなる。このように、シンボルレートがキャリア光の周波数間隔よりも十分小さいという条件下では、分配部形態1~3の入出力ポートを入れ替えた構成を集約部として用いることができる。この場合も、合流原理損失が生じない点がメリットであり、構成が複雑になる点がデメリットである。
<光変調器アレイ部の各種構成>
 次に、光変調器アレイ部の各種構成について説明する。通常、光変調器アレイ部の光変調器には、図32Aに示す単MZI型の位相変調器を用いる。これは前述したように、駆動電気信号の振幅が多少ずれても出力信号に影響が出にくく、また変調スペクトルの広がりが狭い為である。然しながら、これらの品質が気にならない適用先の場合には、図32Bに示す単純な位相変調器構成を用いても構わない。また、発生する信号の最小多値数が2値、即ち、BPSK信号でなくても良いのであれば、光変調器アレイ部の光変調器に、図32Cに示すネストMZI型の変調器を用いても良い。この場合は、最小の多値数は4値、即ちQPSK信号となる。更に、多値数が大きな信号を発生する変調器を用いてももちろん良い。
 尚、最後尾に配置されている可変光移相器は、分配部側や集約部等の他の部分でその機能を設けている場合は、或いは、前述のように光変調器アレイ部の各光変調器間で相対位相の調整を行う必要が無い場合は、省略することが可能である。
 また、これまで説明した可変光移相器に関して、本願発明の光変調器内の各光回路の間に配置されている、信号位相を調節するための可変光移相器は、各光回路に入力される複数の信号間の位相のずれを補正するために配置されている。各光回路に入力される複数の信号間の位相のずれは、光変調器内において使用されている各光回路の光素子の組み合わせによって設計上生じる場合と、温度変化、導波路長の設計値からの作製誤差等により、設計上の値からずれて生じる場合とがある。光変調器内において使用されている各光回路の光素子の組み合わせによっては、設計上は各光回路に入力される信号の位相のずれが生じない場合がある。この場合、上記信号位相調整機能、すなわち光回路間に配置されている信号位相を調節するための可変光移相器は、温度変化、導波路長の設計値からの作製誤差等により生じるずれを補正するためのみに設置される。
<フォーマット可変変調器>
 第1の実施例として作製したフォーマット可変変調器の構成を図33に示す。本実施例では、前述の実施形態のうち、M=4とし、分配部の構成は分配部形態1の単純MZI型とし、集約部の構成は集約部形態1の可変カプラ型とし、光変調器アレイ部はネストMZI型のQPSK変調器を基本構成としている。従って、本変調器は、4キャリアQPSK変調、2キャリア16QAM変調、1キャリア256QAM変調の3種類の変調器として用いることができる。
 本変調器は、石英系平面光波回路(PLC)とLN変調アレイを組み合せた複合集積技術(非特許文献3)を用いて実現した。PLC導波路は、EO効果が非常に小さいため単体で高速変調器を構成することはできないが、伝搬損失がLN導波路の10分の1以下であり非常に低損失な導波媒体であり、且つ、曲がり導波路の許容曲げ半径が2mm程度で高い設計自由度を持つことから、受動回路であれば低損失で多彩な光回路を実現できる。一方、LN導波路は、伝搬損失や許容曲げ半径がPLC導波路と比べて大きいので複雑な光回路を構成することは不向きであるが、高いEO効果を持ち、また、変調に伴う光吸収等の現象が生じないことから、高速変調回路としては非常に優れている。
 従って、特に本実施例の変調器のように複雑な変調器の場合は、分配/集約回路等の受動回路部分にはPLC導波路を用い、変調アレイ部のみLN導波路を用いて両者を複合集積することで、PLC導波路とLN導波路の双方の長所を得ることができ、LN導波路モノリシック技術で作製するよりも低損失で良好な特性の変調器を実現することができる。このメリットは、構成が複雑な変調器ほど顕著となり、今回の構成のようにインターリーブフィルターや可変カプラ、更には後述する実施例2で示すように、分配/集約回路に加えて偏波合成器が必要となる偏波多重変調器では、更にメリットが大きくなる。
 分配部の構成について詳細に説明する。本構成では、各TILFを2段構成、即ち、メインのTILF27-1-1-1、27-2-1-1、27-2-2-1の出力に、それぞれ、サブのTILF27-1-1-2、27-1-1-3、27-2-1-2、27-2-1-3、27-2-2-2、27-2-2-3を接続している。サブTILFとメインTILFは基本的に同じ構成であり、干渉計の光路長差ΔL、即ち、FSRは同じである。但し、サブTILFは1入力1出力の構成とし、いわゆる、ゲート回路として用いる。このような構成にすることで、メインTILFで分離しきれずに漏れこんだクロストークを、サブTILFでブロックすることができるので、低クロストークでの分離特性を得ることができる。
 具体的な動作について、TILF27-1-1-1、27-1-1-2、27-1-1-3を例に説明する。キャリア間隔をΔfとすると、TILF27-1-1-1、27-1-1-2、27-1-1-3のFSRはいずれも2Δfに設計する。TILF27-1-1-1~27-1-1-3を分波器として用いる場合、即ち、キャリア光f1、f2、f3、f4を、f1、f3とf2、f4の2群に分離する場合、TILF27-1-1-1は通常の分波器として動作させる。即ち、f1、f3を例えば上側のポート、f2、f4を下側のポートへ出力するように、TILF27-1-1-1内の可変光移相器を調整する。この時、上側ポートに接続されているTILF27-1-1-2は、f1、f3が最大透過、f2、f4が最小透過となるように、TILF27-1-1-2内の可変光移相器を調整する。同様に、下側ポートに接続されているTILF27-1-1-3は、f1、f3が最小透過、f2、f4が最大透過となるように、TILF27-1-1-3内の可変光移相器を調整する。このように、TILF27-1-1-1で分離されたキャリア光は、TILF27-1-1-2、TILF27-1-1-3で更に不要キャリア光を除去するようにフィルタリングされる。従って、2段構成としたTILFは、通常の一段で構成される場合と比べて、二倍の消光比、即ち、低クロストーク性能を得ることができる。
 TILF27-1-1-1~27-1-1-3全体を可変カプラとして用いる場合、即ち、例えばキャリア光f1を等分配する場合、TILF27-1-1-1内の可変光移相器を調整することで、TILF27-1-1-1の透過特性を周波数軸上でシフトさせ、TILF27-1-1-1の両出力ポートへの透過率が周波数f1で同じになるようにする。この時、TILF27-1-1-2、及び、TILF27-1-1-3は、共に周波数f1で最大透過になるように、TILF27-1-1-2内、及び、TILF27-1-1-3内のそれぞれの可変光移相器を調整する。等分配以外の任意の分岐比、例えば2:1にする場合も基本的には同じで、TILF27-1-1-1の分岐比が周波数f1で所望の分岐比、例では2:1、になるように、TILF27-1-1-1内の可変光移相器を調整する。TILF27-1-1-2、及び、TILF27-1-1-3については、等分配の場合と同じく、周波数f1で最大透過になるように調整する。
 TILF27-2-1-1、27-2-1-2、27-2-1-3、及び、TILF27-2-2-1、27-2-2-2、27-2-2-3に関しても、基本的に考え方は同じである。尚、TILF27-2-1-1、27-2-1-2、27-2-1-3、27-2-2-1、27-2-2-2、27-2-2-3のFSRは共に4Δfに設計する。
 また、図33を見て分かるように、TILFの干渉計の光路長が長い側が、TILF27-1-1-1、27-1-1-2、27-1-1-3に関しては下側、TILF27-2-1-1、27-2-1-2、27-2-1-3、27-2-2-1、27-2-2-2、27-2-2-3に関しては上側となっている。これはこれら干渉計の配置が、実際には回路チップ上で九十九折に配置されており、これら干渉計の光路長が長い側が常に九十九折の曲がりの外側になるようにレイアウトしている為である。この様にレイアウトすることで、チップサイズを小さくすることができる。
 この分配部は、全て入力側のPLCチップ(PLC-I)上に作製されている。TILF内の可変光移相器は、熱光学移相器を用いている。熱光学移相器は、導波路クラッド上に設けた薄膜ヒータによって局所的に導波路の温度を制御し、熱光学効果により薄膜ヒータ直下の導波路の屈折率、即ち導波光の位相を制御するものである。また、入力ポートには、偏波保持ファイバーを接続している。尚、各TILFを構成している3dB光カプラは、波長無依存カプラ(WINC)設計とした。
 次に、光変調器アレイ部の構成について詳しく説明する。光変調器アレイは、4つのネストMZI変調器(QPSK変調器)1-1~1-4からなる。図33に示すように、QPSK変調器でデータ変調を行う変調用光移相器はLN基板上に作製され、3dB光カプラやバイアス制御行うための可変光移相器12-4-1~12-4-16、また、各子MZIからの出力光の相対位相を調整する可変光移相器12-3-12-1~3-8は、PLCチップ(PLC-IやPLC-O)上に作製されている。これらの可変光移相器も熱光学移相器を用いている。尚、LNチップにはXカット基板を用いており、データ変調を行う変調用光移相器の中心電極は、図3Bに示したように、子MZIの間に配置されている。QPSK変調器のIchとQchの子MZIからの信号光を相対位相差90°に調整して合成する為のπ/2光移相器は、熱光学移相器を調整することによって実現している。尚、可変光移相器12-4-1~12-4-16や可変光移相器12-3-1~12-3-8は、今回、PLC-O側に設けたが、PLC-I側に設けてももちろん良い。QPSK変調器の子MZIを構成している3dB光カプラ、及び、親MZIの入力側の3dB光カプラは、Y分岐導波路で構成している。親MZIの出力側の3dB光カプラは波長無依存カプラ(WINC)とした。
 このWINCの出力は2ポートあるが、一方は、集約部である可変カプラVCへ接続し、もう一方は、モニタ出力とした。このモニタは、QPSK変調器毎に用意されているので、各QPSK変調器の動作点バイアス調整やIch/Qch間の位相調整のためのモニタとして用いることができる。更に、QPSK変調器を通してではあるが、分配部の出力ポートをモニタしていることになるので、TILFの分波状態や、TILFをカプラとして動作させている時の分岐比モニタとしても用いることができる。このモニタをもちいることで、出力ポートからの信号光をモニタする場合と比べて、これら調整を非常に効率良く行うことができる。
 次に、集約部の構成について詳細に説明する。本構成では、図27に記載した集約部形態1の構成から、可変カプラ外にある可変光移相器を全て省いた構成としている。このように図27記載の可変光移相器12-1-1、12-1-2や可変光移相器12-2-1~12-2-4を省いても、図33のQPSK変調器内の可変光移相器12-3-1~12-3-8を組み合せて駆動することで代用することができる。例えば、可変光移相器12-2-1に該当する箇所の位相をΔφ動かしたい場合は、その上流にある可変光移相器12-3-1、12-3-2を同時にΔφ動かせば、実質的に変光移相器12-2-1で位相をΔφ動かしたことになる。可変光移相器12-3-1、12-3-2が元々それぞれψ,ψに設定されていた場合には、それぞれψ+Δφ,ψ+Δφに設定し直せば良い。可変光移相器12-1-1で位相をΔφ動かしたい場合も、同様にその上流にある可変光移相器12-3-1~12-3-4を同時にΔφ動かせば良い。他の可変光移相器に関しても同様である。このように可変光移相器を省く構成にすることで回路長を短くしている。
 この集約部は、図33に示す通り全て出力側のPLCチップ(PLC-O)上に作製されている。可変カプラVC25-1-1、25-2-1、25-2-2は可変光移相器を介して2個の3dB光カプラを接続したマッハツェンダー干渉計(MZI)になっている。これらの可変光移相器も熱光学移相器を用いている。また、この3dB光カプラは通常の方向性結合器とした。通常の方向性結合器の場合、結合率はそれなりの波長依存性を持つ。方向性結合器が波長依存性を持ち、結合率が3dB即ち50%からずれると、一般に、可変光移相器をどのように設定しても、VC全体として高い結合比(例えば、1:0等)の特性を得ることができなくなる。然しながら、今回、これらVCで必要な結合率は、1:1、或いは2:1であり、それ程大きな比率を必要としない。このような条件下では、方向性結合器で一般に生じる波長依存性は、通信波長帯(1520~1620nm)の範囲では問題の無いレベルであるので、小型で且つ低損失特性が得られる通常の方向性結合器を今回用いている。
 PLCチップは、火炎堆積(FHD)法等のガラス膜堆積技術と反応性イオンエッチング(RIE)等の微細加工技術の組み合わせを用いて作製した。具体的には、シリコン基板上に下部クラッド層となるガラス膜を堆積/透明化し、引き続き、屈折率がクラッド層よりもやや高いコア層を堆積した。そして、光導波回路となるコアパターンを微細加工技術によりパターン化し、上部クラッド層となるガラス膜を堆積/透明化することで埋め込み型の光導波路を作製した。最後に、上部クラッド表面に薄膜ヒータとなる金属を真空蒸着法等で堆積し、これを微細加工技術でパターン化し、熱光学移相器を装荷した。
 導波路のコアとクラッドの比屈折率差は1.5%である。チップサイズはPLC(I)で約14×36mm、PLC(O)で約7×31mmあった。尚、図中には示していないが、各薄膜ヒータへは駆動連流を給電するための電気配線パターンがチップ上に形成されている。
 LNチップは、Xカット基板上に形成された2対8組の合計16本の位相変調アレイで構成されている。位相変調アレイの各導波路はチタン拡散法により作製し、図3A、Bに示すように、各対の導波路間上部に中心電極を形成し、各対の周囲にはGND電極を形成することで、進行波電極を構成している。尚、図33には示していないが、図3A、Bに示すように、各進行波電極へは変調信号を伝搬させる為の高周波配線パターンがチップ上に形成されている。
 本実施例の変調器は、これらのPLCチップ及びLNチップを端面接続し、PLC-Iの入力ポート、PLC-Oの出力ポートに、それぞれ、偏波保持光ファイバー、通常のシングルモード光ファイバーを接続し、チップ全体を高周波パッケージに収納実装して作製した。
 作製した変調器に、図9Bに示した波長可変光源アレイ4個と光カプラからなるマルチサブキャリア光源を接続し、変調動作の確認を行った。各波長可変光源の発光周波数間隔、即ち、サブキャリア間隔は25GHzである。データ変調を行う8本の変調用光移相器中心電極には、PN=11段の擬似ランダム(PRBS)NRZ電気信号を、8本それぞれ異なる遅延を与えた上で、入力した。変調シンボルレートは25Gbaudである。従って、サブキャリア間隔とシンボルレートが等しいので、複数サブキャリア光を用いて本変調器で発生する光信号はOFDM信号となる。
 4サブキャリアQPSK変調信号を発生する場合は、上記マルチサブキャリア光源から本変調器に4サブキャリア光f1、f2、f3、f4を入力する。TILF27-1-1-1はこれらサブキャリア光を、f1、f3はTILF27-1-1-2側へ、f2、f4はTILF27-1-1-3側への2群に分ける分波器として動作させる。TILF27-1-1-2はf1、f3に対して透過、f2、f4に対して遮断するフィルタとして動作させ、TILF27-1-1-3はf2、f4に対して透過、f1、f3に対して遮断するフィルタとして動作させる。TILF27-2-1-1はf1、f3を、f1はTILF27-2-1-2側へ、f3はTILF27-2-1-3側へ、分ける分波器として動作させる。TILF27-2-1-2はf1に対して透過、f3に対して遮断するフィルタとして動作させ、TILF27-2-1-3はf3に対して透過、f1に対して遮断するフィルタとして動作させる。TILF27-2-2-1はf2、f4を、f2はTILF27-2-2-2側へ、f4はTILF27-2-2-3側へ、分ける分波器として動作させる。TILF27-2-2-2はf2に対して透過、f4に対して遮断するフィルタとして動作させ、TILF27-2-2-3はf4に対して透過、f2に対して遮断するフィルタとして動作させる。4つのQPSK変調器1-1~1-4は、それぞれQPSK変調器として動作させる。VC25-1-1、25-2-1、25-2-2は全て50%結合に調整する。尚、実際のデバイスの伝搬損失のバラツキ等や、各サブキャリア光の光パワーレベルのバラツキがある場合には、これらVCの結合率を微妙に調整して、各サブキャリア信号のレベルを揃える様にしてももちろん良い。
 出力された信号光の光スペクトルを図34Aの上図に示す。尚、マルチキャリア光源でサブキャリアを1波ずつ発光させた時の出力信号光のスペクトルも合わせて重ねて示す。また、サブキャリアを1波ずつ発光させた時の出力信号光の信号コンスタレーション、即ち各サブキャリアの信号コンスタレーションを図34Aの下図に示す。このように、良好な4サブキャリアQPSK変調信号が発生できていることが分かる。
 2キャリア16QAM変調信号を発生する場合は、上記マルチサブキャリア光源から本変調器に2サブキャリア光f1,f2を入力する。TILF27-1-1-1はこれらサブキャリア光を、f1はTILF27-1-1-2側へ、f2はTILF27-1-1-3側へ、に分ける分波器として動作させる。TILF27-1-1-2はf1に対して透過、f2に対して遮断するフィルタとして動作させ、TILF27-1-1-3はf2に対して透過、f1に対して遮断するフィルタとして動作させる。TILF27-2-1-1はf1において2:1カプラとなるように動作させる。TILF27-2-1-2,27-2-1-3は共にf1に対して最大透過となるように動作させる。TILF27-2-2-1はf2において2:1カプラとなるように動作させる。TILF27-2-2-2、27-2-2-3はf2に対して共に最大透過となるように動作させる。QPSK変調器は、QPSK変調器1-1と1-2、QPSK変調器1-3と1-4をそれぞれ組にして16QAM変調器として動作させる。VC25-1-1は50%結合に調整する。VC25-2-1、25-2-2は2:1カプラになるように調整する。QPSK変調器1-1で生成される電界強度が2であるQPSK信号(大QPSK信号)と、QPSK変調器1-2で生成される電界強度が1であるQPSK信号(小QPSK信号)の相対位相関係は、可変光移相器12-3-1と12-3-2を同時に、或いは、可変光移相器12-3-3と12-3-4を同時に変化させることで調整する。QPSK変調器1-3での大QPSK信号とQPSK変調器1-2での小QPSK信号の相対位相関係に関しても同様に可変光移相器12-3-5と12-3-6を同時に、或いは、可変光移相器12-3-7と12-3-8を同時に変化させることで調整する。
 出力された信号光の光スペクトル、及び、各サブキャリアの信号コンスタレーションを図34Bに示す。このように、良好な2サブキャリア16QAM変調信号が発生できていることが分かる。
 1キャリア256QAM変調信号を発生する場合は、上記マルチサブキャリア光源から本変調器にサブキャリア光f1のみを入力する。TILF27-1-1-1はf1において4:1カプラとなるように動作させる。TILF27-1-1-2、27-1-1-3は共にf1に対して最大透過となるように動作させる。TILF27-2-1-1、TILF27-2-2-1はf1において共に2:1カプラとなるように動作させる。TILF27-2-1-2、27-2-1-3、27-2-2-2、27-2-2-3は共にf1に対して最大透過となるように動作させる。QPSK変調器は、4つのQPSK変調器を組にして256QAM変調器として動作させる。VC25-1-1は4:1カプラになるように、VC25-2-1、25-2-2は2:1カプラになるように調整する。各QPSK変調器で生成されるQPSK信号間の相対位相関係は、可変光移相器12-3-1と12-3-2、12-3-3と12-3-4、12-3-5と12-3-6、12-3-7と12-3-8を組にして変化させることで調整する。
 出力された信号光の光スペクトルは図34B上図のch1のみのスペクトルとほぼ同様のスペクトルが得られた。但し、信号コンステレーションに関しては、16行16列の信号点と考えられる図が得られたものの、256QAM信号になると、駆動電気信号自体の品質、即ち雑音の影響が見えてくるため、ぼやけたコンステレーションとなった。これは原理的な問題ではないので、駆動電気信号自体の品質を向上させた評価系で動作を行えば改善する。
 以上のように、キャリア数と多値数が異なる信号光、即ち、占有帯域幅とSNR劣化耐力の異なる複数の変調フォーマットの信号光を、同一の変調器で動的に切り替えて発生させることができた。
<フォーマット可変変調器2>
 実施例1の変型版として、集約部の構成を集約部実施形態6の構成としたのが、実施例2である。本集約部の構成を図35に示す。尚、分配部や光変調器アレイ部の構成及び動作は実施例1と同じである。本集約部は、分配部形態6と分配部形態7を組み合せた構成を、入出力を入れ替え、集約部として用いている。
 初段目であるTILF57-2-1、57-2-2には、分配部形態6で示した可変カプラ内蔵単純MZI型のTILFを用い、最終段であるTILF57-1-1には、分配部形態7で示した可変カプラ内蔵ラティス型のTILFを用いている。これらTILFの基本的な動作の考え方は、分配部形態6と分配部形態7で示した説明と同じであり、分岐/分波を、それぞれ合流/合波に読み替えて考えればよい。
 4キャリア時には、TILF57-2-1をQPSK変調器1-1からのキャリア周波数f1の信号光とQPSK変調器1-2からのキャリア周波数f3の信号光を合波させる合波器、TILF57-2-2をQPSK変調器1-3からのキャリア周波数f2の信号光とQPSK変調器1-4からのキャリア周波数f4の信号光を合波させる合波器、TILF57-1-1をTILF57-2-1からのキャリア周波数f1,f3の信号光とTILF57-2-2からのキャリア周波数f2,f4の信号光を合波させる合波器として動作させる。2キャリア時には、TILF57-2-1をQPSK変調器1-1からのキャリア周波数f1の信号光とQPSK変調器1-2からのキャリア周波数f1の信号光を2:1の比率で合流させ16QAM信号を合成させる合流器、TILF57-2-2をQPSK変調器1-3からのキャリア周波数f2の信号光とQPSK変調器1-4からのキャリア周波数f2の信号光を2:1の比率で合流させ16QAM信号を合成させる合流器、TILF57-1-1をTILF57-2-1からのキャリア周波数f1の信号光とTILF57-2-2からのキャリア周波数f2の信号光を合波させる合波器として動作させる。1キャリア時には、TILF57-2-1をQPSK変調器1-1からのキャリア周波数f1の信号光とQPSK変調器1-2からのキャリア周波数f1の信号光を2:1に比率で合流させ16QAM信号を合成させる合流器、TILF57-2-2をQPSK変調器1-3からのキャリア周波数f1の信号光とQPSK変調器1-4からのキャリア周波数f1の信号光を2:1の比率で合流させ16QAM信号を合成させる合流器、TILF57-1-1をTILF57-2-1からのキャリア周波数f1の信号光とTILF57-2-2からのキャリア周波数f1の信号光を4:1の比率で合流させ256QAM信号を合成させる合流器として動作させる。
 いずれの場合も合波器として動作させる場合には、キャリア周波数では原理損失を生じずに信号を集約することができる。また、合波の際には信号光の高調波をカットする効果が得られる。
 本集約部の構成では、TILF57-2-1、57-2-2には可変カプラ内蔵単純MZI型を、TILF57-1-1には可変カプラ内蔵ラティス型のTILFを用いているが、これは回路サイズと合波動作時の透過特性のバランスを取ったためである。TILF57-1-1は、偶数チャンネルと奇数チャンネルを交互にインターリーブ合波する為に、切れの良いフィルタ特性にした方が良いので、透過周波数特性の矩形度に優れる可変カプラ内蔵ラティス型のTILFを用いた。一方、TILF57-2-1、57-2-2では、隣接チャンネル同士を合波するのではなく1チャンネルスキップしたチャンネルを合波する為、フィルタ特性の切れはそれ程求められないので、回路サイズが小さくて済む可変カプラ内蔵単純MZI型のTILFを用いた。
 この様に、本実施形態では、集約部の回路構成が実施形態1と比べてやや複雑になるもののマルチキャリア時には、損失が低く、且つ、各キャリア信号間で信号高調波に起因するクロストークが少ないというメリットが得られる。
 尚、クロストークを低減させるという観点では、最終段であるTILF57-1-1が大きな役割を果たしている。これは、集約部形態5で述べたように隣接チャンネルの信号からのクロストークの影響が一番大きいからである。従って、損失に関してあまり考慮しなくて良いのであれば、最終段以外のTILF、本実施例ではTILF57-2-1、57-2-2、を集約部形態1で示した可変光カプラを用いても良い。この場合、一部の合波動作時に損失が犠牲になるが、TILFを可変光カプラに置き換えた分、回路サイズは小さくできる。このように、要求仕様に応じて、各集約部形態を織り交ぜた構成にしても勿論良い。
<偏波多重機能付きフォーマット可変変調器>
 実施例3として作製した偏波多重機能付きフォーマット可変変調器の構成を図36に示す。本実施例では、前述の実施形態のうち、M=4とし、分配部の構成は形態1の単純MZI型とし、集約部の構成は集約部形態1の可変カプラ型とし、光変調器アレイ部は単MZI型のBPSK変調器を基本構成とし、これらを2系統集積し偏波多重を行う構成としている。従って、本変調器は、偏波多重4キャリアBPSK変調、偏波多重2キャリアQPSK変調、偏波多重1キャリア16QAM変調の3種類の変調器として用いることができる。本変調器も石英系平面光波回路(PLC)とLN変調アレイを組み合せた複合集積技術を適用して実現した。また、LNチップ基板も実施例1と同じようにXカット基板を用いている。
 本構成でも、実施例1と同じように分配部の各TILFは低クロストーク特性が得られる2段構成にした。図中では、2段構成をまとめてTILFとして符号付けをしている。
 偏波多重信号を生成する場合は、通常、変調器を2セット分レイアウトし、この2個の変調器の出力光を直交偏波関係で偏波多重する。よって、基本的には単偏波での変調器2個に、CW入力光をこれら2個の変調器に分配する光カプラ、及び、偏波回転器と偏波合成カプラが必要な構成要素になる。従って、今回のフォーマット可変変調器に関しても同様に、フォーマット可変変調器が2セット必要となるが、本実施例では各要素の接続関係を工夫することにより、分配部のTILFを単偏波分の1セットのみに抑える構成とした。具体的には、CW入力光を2系統に分配する光カプラを、分配部の前ではなく、分配部の後、即ち、光変調器アレイの前に配置した。図36を見て分かるように、入力光は直ぐにTILFで構成される分配部に入力され、この分配部で、分波或いは分岐された後に、4つの分配カプラで分配され、BPSK変調器に入力されている。8個あるBPSK変調器は、BPSK変調器50-1、50-3、50-5、50-7がX偏波用、BPSK変調器50-2、50-4、50-6、50-8がY偏波用と、X偏波信号用とY偏波信号用が上から交互に並べられている。ここで、X偏波信号用とY偏波信号用の変調器は共にXカット基板を用いた変調器なので、これら変調器を通過している時点での信号光はいずれも基板に対して水平な偏波方向(TE偏波)で伝搬していることに注意されたい。これらの信号は合流用3dBカプラやVCで合波或いは合流された後、偏波回転器により、Y偏波用の信号光は偏波方向を基板に対して垂直な方向(TM偏光)に変換されて、偏波合成カプラにより、もう一方のX偏波用信号光と多重されて出力される。
 このように、入力CW光をX偏波信号用とY偏波信号用の2系統に分配する光カプラ(各偏波信号分配用3dB光カプラ)を、分配部と光変調器アレイ部の間に配置することにより、この分配光カプラの数は多くなるものの、分配部をX偏波信号用とY偏波信号用で共用化し、分配部の数を1セットのみに抑えることができた。分配光カプラの面積に比べると、TILF等で構成される分配部の面積は桁違いに大きいので、大幅にレイアウト面積を削減できる。また、各種変調フォーマットを切り替える際に分配部のTILF等は前述のように可変移相器を複数個所動作させるが、分配部の数が1セットで済むという事は、この動作箇所も増えないということを意味するので、動作制御が簡単になり、また消費電力も低減できるというメリットも得ることができる。
 集約部では、X偏波信号用とY偏波信号用の2系統の回路が編みこまれるようにレイアウトされている。可変光カプラVC25-1からはX偏波用の変調信号光が、可変光カプラVC25-2からはY偏波用の変調信号光が出力され、偏波回転器、偏波合成カプラを経て、これらの信号光が偏波多重されて出力される。
 尚、X偏波信号用とY偏波信号用の2系統の光回路をレイアウトする方法としては、図31Aの方法以外の方法も可能である。例えば、図37に示すように、BPSK変調器50-1~50-4をX偏波信号用に、BPSK変調器50-5~50-8をY偏波信号用にして、前述の4つの分配光カプラの出力を相互に編みこんで、これらBPSK変調器に接続し、X偏波信号用集約部とY偏波信号用集約部は単純に上下に並べるレイアウトがある。また、別のレイアウト方法として、図38に示すように、BPSK変調器50-1、50-2、50-5、50-6をX偏波信号用に、BPSK変調器50-3、50-4、50-7、50-8をY偏波信号用にして、分配光カプラ49-1、49-2の出力を編みこんで、分配光カプラ49-3、49-4の出力を編みこんで、X偏波信号用集約部とY偏波信号用集約部は合流用3dB光カプラとVCの間でのみ編みこむレイアウトなどがある。いずれの方法もX偏波信号用BPSK変調器とY偏波信号用BPSK変調器の並ぶ順番が変わるだけで、光回路としての接続関係は変わらないので、機能的には同じ構成である。
 尚、図37,38では、作図上、各偏波信号分配用3dB光カプラと各BPSK変調器までの導波路長が各経路で異なっているように見えるが、実際のレイアウトでは等長になるように設計している。厳密に言えば、TILFの経路長は短アーム側で計算して、本変調器の入力ポートから出力ポートまでの距離が、BPSK変調毎の各経路で同じになるように設計している。実施例1、2や実施例3の図36に示した構成に関してももちろん、この等長設計を行っている。
 TE偏波光をTM偏波光に変換する偏波回転器には、主軸を45°傾けた薄膜の半波長板を用いている。45°の半波長板を透過する各偏波の光は、ポアンカレ球上で見てみると45°直線偏波軸であるPQ軸で半回転した位置に偏波変換される。従って、TE偏光はTM偏光に、TM偏光はTE偏光に変換されるのでTE/TM変換器として動作する。半波長板は、導波路を横切る溝に挿入し屈折率整合した接着剤にて固定してある。尚、導波路を横切る溝は半波長板での反射が戻り光として伝搬するのを防ぐ為に8度傾けて作製してある。尚、PLC-Iに入力する信号光はTE偏光となるように偏光保持入力ファイバーの角度を調整してある。
 偏波合成カプラには、2個の光カプラに挟まれた2本のアーム導波路の一方に応力解放溝が掘られた干渉計を用いている。ガラスの高温透明化工程を経た石英系導波路は、シリコン基板と石英ガラスの熱膨張係数差に起因して、一般に強い圧縮応力が生じており、これにより複屈折Bが生じている。応力解放溝部では応力解放により複屈折Bが非常に小さい値になっていることから、応力解放溝の長さ、及び、干渉計の導波路長差を調整することで、偏波合成カプラを構成している干渉計アームの光路長差を、例えば、TE偏光に対しては等長の光路長差に、TM偏光に対しては半波長の光路長差に設計することができる。このように設計された干渉計では、TE偏光とTM偏光は別ポートに伝搬するため、上側入力ポートに入力されたTE偏光の信号光と下側入力ポートに入力されたTM偏光を共に出力ポートに出力することができる。従って、このような干渉計は偏波合成カプラとして動作する。
 可変光移相器として用いる熱光学移相器の薄膜ヒータの両側のクラッドには熱光学移相器の消費電力を低減する為の断熱溝を設けた(図36~38では、図示を省略してある)。尚、図中には示していないが、各薄膜ヒータへは駆動連流を給電するための電気配線パターンがチップ上に形成されている。
 各チップの作製方法、チップ接続実装方法等の作製方法は、実施例1と同様である。
 本実施例でも、図9Bに示したマルチキャリア光源を使用して変調動作の確認を行った。各波長可変光源の発光周波数間隔、即ち、キャリア間隔は50GHzにした。データ変調を行う8本の変調用光移相器中心電極には、PN=11段の擬似ランダム(PRBS)NRZ電気信号を、8本それぞれ異なる遅延を与えた上で、入力した。変調シンボルレートは25Gbaudである。従って、キャリア間隔がシンボルレートの2倍あるので、本実施例で動作確認する光信号は普通のFDM信号となる。尚、今回の変調シンボルレートは評価装置の都合上25Gbaudとしたが、今回のキャリア間隔50GHzの場合、前述のようにOFDM信号となる50Gbaudまでの変調シンボルレートまで高速化しても各キャリアの信号の独立性を保つことができるので、例えば、100G伝送で用いられている32Gbaudのシンボルレートで変調を行うことももちろん可能である。
 4キャリアBPSK変調信号を発生する場合は、上記マルチキャリア光源から本変調器に4キャリア光f1、f2、f3、f4を入力する。実施例1の4キャリア時と同様の動作により、TILF27-1-1はこれらキャリア光をf1、f3はTILF27-2-1側へ、f2、f4はTILF27-2-2側への2群に分ける分波器として動作させ、TILF27-2-1はf1、f3をf1は分配用3dBカプラ49-1側へ、f3は分配用3dBカプラ49-2側へ、分ける分波器として動作させ、TILF27-2-2はf2,f4を、f2は分配用3dBカプラ49-3側へ、f4は分配用3dBカプラ49-4側へ、に分ける分波器として動作させる。8つのBPSK変調器は、それぞれBPSK変調器として動作させる。VC25-1、VC25-2は共に50%結合に調整する。
 本変調器から出力された信号光をバルクのPBSでX偏波信号のみ切り出して観測した光スペクトルを図39Aの上図に、各キャリアの信号コンスタレーションを図39Aの下図に示す。バルクPBSでY偏波のみ切り出して観測した場合も同様の測定結果が得られた。このように、良好な偏波多重4キャリアBPSK変調信号を生成できていることが分かる。
 2キャリアQPSK変調信号を発生する場合は、上記マルチキャリア光源から本変調器に2キャリア光f1,f2を入力する。実施例1の2キャリア時と同様の動作により、TILF27-1-1はこれらキャリア光を、f1はTILF27-2-1側へ、f2はTILF27-2-2側へ、に分ける分波器として動作させ、TILF27-2-1はf1において3dBカプラとなるように動作させ、TILF27-2-2はf2において3dBカプラとなるように動作させる。BPSK変調器は、BPSK変調器50-1と50-3、BPSK変調器50-2と50-4、BPSK変調器50-5と50-7、BPSK変調器50-6と50-8をそれぞれ組にしてQPSK変調器として動作させる。VC25-1、VC25-2は共に50%結合に調整する。
 出力された信号光のX偏波信号の光スペクトル、及び、各サブキャリアの信号コンスタレーションを図32Bに示す。Y偏波の場合も同様の測定結果が得られた。このように、良好な偏波多重2キャリアQPSK変調信号を生成できていることが分かる。
 1キャリア16QAM変調を発生する場合は、上記マルチキャリア光源から本変調器にキャリア光f1のみを入力する。TILF27-1-1はf1において2:1カプラとなるように動作させ、TILF27-2-1、TILF27-2-2はf1において3dBカプラとなるように動作させる。BPSK変調器は4つのBPSK変調器50-1、50-3、50-5、50-7で一組、50-2、50-4、50-6、50-8で一組にして2組の16QAM変調器として動作させる。VC25-1、VC25-2は2:1カプラになるように調整する。
 BPSK変調器50-1、50-3で構成されるQPSK変調器で生成される電界強度が2であるQPSK信号(大QPSK信号)と、BPSK変調器50-5、50-7で構成されるQPSK変調器で生成される電界強度が1であるQPSK信号(小QPSK信号)の相対位相関係は、可変光移相器12-1と12-3を同時に、或いは、可変光移相器12-5と12-7を同時に変化させることで調整する。同様にBPSK変調器50-2、50-4で構成されるQPSK変調器で生成される大QPSK信号と、BPSK変調器50-6、50-8で構成されるQPSK変調器で生成される小QPSK信号の相対位相関係は、可変光移相器12-2と12-4を同時に、或いは、可変光移相器12-6と12-8を同時に変化させることで調整する。
 出力された信号光のX偏波信号の光スペクトル、及び、各サブキャリアの信号コンスタレーションを図39Cに示す。Y偏波の場合も同様の測定結果が得られた。このように、良好な偏波多重1キャリア16QAM変調信号を生成できていることが分かる。
 以上のように、本実施例でも、キャリア数と多値数が異なる信号光、即ち、占有帯域幅とSNR劣化耐力の異なる複数の変調フォーマットの信号光を、同一の変調器で動的に切り替えて発生させることができた。
 尚、本実施例では、偏波合成器の実現には、応力解放溝を用いた複屈折調整を利用したが、これ以外の例えば、導波路幅を横方向に広くして扁平な導波路構造にした場合に生じる構造複屈折を利用する方法や、また半波長板を主軸0°、或いは90°の角度で導波路に挿入することで半波長板自身の複屈折を利用する方法を用いても良い。また、3dBの原理損失を許容すれば通常の3dB光カプラで代用しても良い。但し、偏波合成器を用いた方が、この原理損失を回避できるほか、前述の偏波回転器で回転し切れなかった偏波成分を偏波合成器で除去でき、偏波クロストークを低減できるので、通常は偏波合成器を用いた方が良い。
 以上の実施例では、LNチップにはXカット基板を用いたが、Zカット基板を用いた構成としても良い。この場合、信号電極の数がXカット基板を用いた場合と比べると倍になる。また、分極反転構造をもつZカット基板を用いても良い。この場合は、信号電極の数はXカット基板を用いた場合と同じで済む。
 また、以上の実施例では、複合集積の組み合わせとして、LN導波路と石英系PLC導波路の組み合わせで説明しているが、これは、LN導波路は高いEO効果を持ち高速変調器の主流導波路技術であり、また、石英系導波路は受動導波路としては最も低損失な導波路であり、この組み合せが、複雑な変調器を低損失に実現する組み合わせとして優れているからである。しかしながら、他の材料系の導波路、例えば、EO効果をもつ導波路系として多元系酸化物材料や半導体材料等を用いた導波路と、受動導波路としてシリコンや高分子材料を用いた導波路の組み合わせ、或いは、EO効果をもつ導波路単体でモノリシックに構成しても、もちろん、本実施例等で示した効果が同様に得られることに変わりは無いことを付記しておく。
 更には、変調器の構成要素は空間系デバイスでも実現できることから、空間系のデバイス要素で構成してももちろん良いことも付記しておく。

Claims (13)

  1.  光変調器であって、
     光分波機能と光分岐機能を切り替えることができる光分波/光分岐切替可能回路からなる分配部と、
     該分配部に接続された光変調器アレイと、
     該光変調手段に接続され、合流比率を変えられる合流比率可変合流回路、及び/又は、光合波機能と光合流機能を切り替えることができる光合波/光合流切替可能回路からなる集約部と
     からなることを特徴とする光変調器。
  2.  前記光分波/光分岐切替可能回路、及び/又は、前記光合波/光合流切替可能回路が合分波特性を変えられる可変フィルタを含むことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の光変調器。
  3.  請求項2記載の可変フィルタが、可変インターリーブフィルタ、或いは、複数の可変インターリーブフィルタをツリー状、又は、逆ツリー状に接続した構成である、ことを特徴とする請求項2に記載の光変調器。
  4.  請求項3記載の可変インターリーブフィルタが1入力2出力インターリーブフィルタの2出力にそれぞれ1入力1出力インターリーブフィルタを接続して構成されていること、又は、該構成の入出力を入れ替えた構成であることを特徴とする請求項3に記載の光変調器。
  5.  請求項2記載の可変フィルタが、M=2(nは自然数)において、1入力M出力光カプラと、M経路の遅延回路と、該遅延回路からの経路に対して2n-1個の2入力2出力光カプラがn段容易されk段目j番(kは1~nの整数、jは1~2n-1の自然数)の該光カプラはX番目の経路とY番目の経路を結合し各段の間には各経路の相対位相を調整する光位相調節器を備えたM入力M出力光カプラと、からなること、又は、該構成の入出力を入れ替えた構成であること、ここで、

    ただし、(j-1)div2n-kと(j-1)mod2n-kはそれぞれ、(j-1)を2n-kで割った商と、余りであることを特徴とする請求項2に記載の光変調器。
  6.  前記光分波/光分岐切替可能回路、及び/又は、前記光合波/光合流切替可能回路が、光カプラと遅延線からなる干渉計型フィルタを含み、該光カプラの少なくとも一部が結合率可変の光カプラであり、該結合率を調整することで一部の遅延線を通る光をゼロにして干渉機能を消失させ、分波機能を分岐機能、又は、合波機能を合流機能に切り替えることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の光変調器。
  7.  前記光分波/光分岐切替可能回路、及び/又は、前記光合波/光合流切替可能回路が、光合分波器と、分岐比/合流比固定或いは可変光分岐器/合流器と、該合分波器と該光分岐器/合流器を選択切り替えする光スイッチと、からなることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の光変調器。
  8.  前記光分波/光分岐切替可能回路が、1入力2出力の可変光カプラをツリー状に接続した構成からなり、該可変光カプラの一方の出力には2入力1出力の光スイッチが挿入され、該光スイッチの他方の入力ポートが前記光分波/光分岐切替可能分配部の他の入力ポートであること、を特徴とする請求項1に記載の光変調器。
  9.  前記合流比率可変合流回路が可変光カプラであることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の光変調器。
  10.  請求項9記載の可変光カプラが、複数の2入力1出力可変カプラを逆ツリー状に接続してなることを特徴とする請求項9に記載の光変調器。
  11.  請求項10記載の可変光カプラが、最終段の2入力1出力可変カプラの入力に、1入力1出力の可変インターリーブフィルタを備えていることを特徴とする請求項10に記載の光変調器。
  12.  請求項9記載の可変光カプラが、M入力のカプラであり、M=2(nは自然数)、該M入力の経路に対して2n-1個の2入力2出力光カプラがn段容易されk段目j番(kは1~nの整数、jは1~2n-1の自然数)の該光カプラはX番目の経路とY番目の経路を結合し各段の間には各経路の相対位相を調整する光位相調節器を備えたM入力M出力光カプラと、M入力1出力光カプラと、からなり、ここで

  13.  前記分配部に出力光を2系統に分配する光カプラが接続され、分配された2系統それぞれに前記光変調器アレイが接続され、該2系統の光変調器アレイにそれぞれ前記集約部が接続され、該集約部の一方に出力光の偏波方向を他方の出力光の偏波方向に直交する偏波に変換する偏波回転器が備えられ、前記集約部からの出力光を合波する光カプラからなることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の光変調器。
