Definitions
- the present invention relates to a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery and a manufacturing method thereof.
- Such a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery (hereinafter sometimes simply referred to as “battery”) includes an electrode group in which a porous insulating layer is provided between a positive electrode and a negative electrode. This electrode group is provided together with an electrolyte in a battery case made of stainless steel, nickel-plated iron, or metal such as aluminum (Patent Document 1).
- the present invention has been made in view of the above points, and the object of the present invention is to store a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery in a charged state at a high temperature or a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery. Even when the secondary battery is repeatedly charged and discharged, the non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery is prevented from swelling and leaking to ensure the safety of the battery.
- the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery of the present invention includes a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and a porous insulating layer, and the porous insulating layer is provided between the positive electrode and the negative electrode.
- the positive electrode has a positive electrode current collector and a positive electrode mixture layer, and the positive electrode mixture layer is provided on at least one surface of the positive electrode current collector.
- the positive electrode current collector contains aluminum particles having an average crystal grain size of 1 ⁇ m or more. In other words, the tensile elongation of the positive electrode is 3% or more.
- the positive electrode mixture layer includes a positive electrode active material and an organic material having a melting point or softening point higher than 200 ° C. Such an organic material is preferably a binder.
- Such a positive electrode is produced according to the following method. First, a positive electrode active material and an organic material having a melting point or softening point higher than 200 ° C. are provided on at least one surface of the positive electrode current collector. Next, the positive electrode current collector provided on the surface with the positive electrode active material and the organic material is rolled and then heat-treated at a predetermined temperature.
- the predetermined temperature is 200 ° C. ⁇ (predetermined temperature) ⁇ (melting point or softening point of the organic material).
- the non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery In the heat treatment step performed after rolling, moisture or carbon dioxide adsorbed on the surface of the positive electrode active material can be removed from the surface of the positive electrode active material. Therefore, if a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery is produced using this positive electrode, the non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery can be charged from the positive electrode active material even if it is stored under high temperature (for example, in an environment of 60 ° C. or higher). Generation of gas such as carbon dioxide can be prevented. Moreover, if a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery is produced using this positive electrode, it is possible to prevent generation of gas such as carbon dioxide from the positive electrode active material even if the non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery is repeatedly charged and discharged. it can.
- the melting point or softening point of the organic material is higher than 200 ° C.
- the organic material can be prevented from melting or softening in the heat treatment step performed after rolling. Therefore, it is possible to prevent the molten or softened organic material from covering the positive electrode active material.
- the “average crystal grain size” is a value obtained according to the following method in this specification. First, after charging the battery, the positive electrode is taken out from the battery. Next, the cross section of the positive electrode is processed under predetermined conditions. Subsequently, a scanning ion microscope image (SIM image: Scanning Ion Microscope Image) is measured on the processed cross section. Thereafter, the crystal grain size of the aluminum particles is measured from the obtained SIM image, and the average value of the crystal grain sizes of the measured aluminum particles is obtained.

- the “positive electrode tensile elongation” is a value obtained according to the following method in the present specification. First, a positive electrode for measurement (width is 15 mm and length in the longitudinal direction is 20 mm) is prepared. Next, one end in the longitudinal direction of the measurement positive electrode is fixed, and the other end in the longitudinal direction of the measurement positive electrode is pulled at a speed of 20 mm / min along the longitudinal direction of the measurement positive electrode. Thereafter, the length in the longitudinal direction of the measurement positive electrode immediately before being broken is measured, and the tensile elongation of the positive electrode is measured using the measured length and the length in the longitudinal direction of the measurement positive electrode before pulling (that is, 20 mm). Calculate the rate.
- the organic material may be present on the surface of the positive electrode mixture layer more than the portion of the positive electrode mixture layer that is in contact with the surface of the positive electrode current collector.
- the organic material is at least one of polyimide, a polyimide derivative, a polymer of tetrafluoroethylene, and a copolymer containing tetrafluoroethylene units.
- the positive electrode active material is LiNi x M (1-x) O 2 (M is at least one of Co, Al and Mn, x is a 0.3 ⁇ x ⁇ 1 It is preferable that
- the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery in a charged state is stored at a high temperature, or even when the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery is repeatedly charged and discharged.
- the safety of the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery can be ensured.

- FIG. 6 is a flowchart showing a first method of manufacturing a positive electrode in the first modification of the embodiment of the present invention.
- FIG. 7 is a table summarizing the results obtained in the examples.
- the applicant of the present application performs heat treatment at a predetermined temperature after rolling a positive electrode current collector provided with a positive electrode active material or the like on the surface (in this specification, this heat treatment is referred to as “heat treatment after rolling”).
- the tensile elongation of the positive electrode can be 3% or more (if the heat treatment after rolling is not performed, the tensile elongation of the positive electrode is about 1.5%). It discloses that the occurrence of a short circuit can be prevented.
- the heat treatment temperature after rolling is preferably as low as possible (for example, 170 ° C.).
- the inventors of the present application have increased the heat treatment temperature after rolling, for example, if the temperature is set to 200 ° C. or higher, the non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery in a charged state is subjected to a high temperature (for example, 60 ° C. or higher environment). It was found that the increase in the internal pressure of the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery can be suppressed when the battery is stored in (1) or when the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery is repeatedly charged and discharged.
- the present inventors have now found that the above-mentioned problems can be solved by increasing the heat treatment temperature after rolling. From this, the inventors of the present application thought that the above-mentioned problem was caused not only by the factor of decomposition of the nonaqueous electrolyte but also by a factor completely different from the factor. In order to elucidate a new factor, the present inventors examined a phenomenon occurring in the positive electrode during the heat treatment after rolling. Then, it turned out that gas generate
- the amount of gas generated from the positive electrode increased as the heat treatment temperature after rolling increased until the heat treatment temperature after rolling reached T 1 ( ⁇ 200 ° C.).
- the heat treatment temperature after rolling is more than T 1, the amount of gas generated from the positive electrode was hardly increased.
- the inventors of the present application as a new factor that causes the above-mentioned problem, is that the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery in a charged state is stored at a high temperature or is compared with the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery. It was considered that gas was generated from the positive electrode when charge and discharge were repeated. Further, the inventors of the present application pay attention to the fact that the lithium composite oxide easily reacts with carbon dioxide and moisture in the air, and when the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery in a charged state is stored at a high temperature or the nonaqueous electrolyte. The following was considered as the reason why gas is generated from the positive electrode when charging and discharging are repeatedly performed on the secondary battery.
- the positive electrode is conventionally produced according to the following method. First, a positive electrode active material, a conductive agent, and a binder are applied to the surface of the positive electrode current collector. Next, the positive electrode current collector with the positive electrode active material applied on the surface is rolled. The rolled positive electrode current collector is cut into a predetermined shape and size.
- the positive electrode active material, carbon dioxide and moisture react with each other on the surface of the positive electrode active material to produce a compound.
- a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery is produced using this positive electrode and stored at a high temperature in a state where the non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery is charged, or charging and discharging are repeatedly performed on the non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery.
- the compound is decomposed, resulting in the generation of gas.
- a compound generated by causing a reaction between the positive electrode active material, carbon dioxide, and moisture on the surface of the positive electrode active material is referred to as a “compound that induces an increase in internal pressure”.
- the factor causing the above-described defect is more dominant than the factor that has been found so far.
- a temperature of 200 ° C. or higher eg, 200 ° C. or higher and 300 ° C. or lower
- the heat treatment after rolling is preferably performed at 230 ° C. or more and 250 ° C. or less.
- FIG. 2 is a graph schematically showing the relationship between the heat treatment temperature after rolling and the battery capacity when PvdF is used as the positive electrode binder.
- PvdF is preferably used as the positive electrode binder, but the melting point Tm of PvdF is 172 ° C. Therefore, when the heat treatment temperature after rolling is set to 200 ° C. or higher, PvdF melts and coats the positive electrode active material. Therefore, the capacity of the manufactured non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery is significantly smaller than the designed capacity.
- the inventors of the present application may use an organic material that does not melt or soften at 200 ° C. or higher (eg, 200 ° C. or higher and 300 ° C. or lower) as a binder for the positive electrode.
- the present invention has been completed.
- FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery according to the present embodiment.
- FIG. 4 is a cross-sectional view of the electrode group in the present embodiment.
- the electrode group 8 is housed in the battery case 1 together with the nonaqueous electrolyte, and the opening of the battery case 1 is sealed by the sealing plate 2.
- the electrode group 8 is formed by winding a positive electrode 4 and a negative electrode 5 with a porous insulating layer 6 interposed therebetween.
- the positive electrode 4 is connected to the lower surface of a sealing plate (functioning as a positive electrode terminal) 2 through a positive electrode lead 4a, and has a positive electrode current collector 4A and positive electrode mixture layers 4B and 4B.
- the negative electrode 5 is connected to a rivet 21 (functioning as a negative electrode terminal) provided on the sealing plate 2 via a negative electrode lead 5a, and includes a negative electrode current collector 5A and negative electrode mixture layers 5B and 5B. .
- the rivet 21 is insulated from the sealing plate 2 by a gasket 22.
- An injection hole (not shown) is formed in the sealing plate 2, and the nonaqueous electrolyte is injected into the battery case 1 from the injection hole. When the nonaqueous electrolyte is injected into the battery case 1, the injection hole is closed by the plug 23.
- the positive electrode 4 will be described in detail.
- 4 A of positive electrode collectors should just have thickness of 10 micrometers or more and 500 micrometers or less, for example, may be a board
- 4 A of positive electrode collectors should just contain aluminum, may consist of aluminum, and may consist of aluminum containing a small amount of iron (for example, 1.20 mass% or more and 1.70 mass% or less). good. In such a positive electrode current collector 4A, the average crystal grain size of the aluminum particles is 1 ⁇ m or more. In addition, since the heat processing temperature after rolling in this embodiment is 200 degreeC or more, this inventor thinks that 4 A of positive electrode electrical power collectors may or may not contain iron.
- the positive electrode mixture layer 4B is provided on both surfaces of the positive electrode current collector 4A, and contains a positive electrode active material, a conductive agent, and a binder.
- the positive electrode active material can be used without particular limitation as long as it is a known material as the positive electrode active material of the lithium ion secondary battery.
- a lithium composite oxide such as LiCoO 2 , LiNiO 2 , LiMnO 2, or LiCoNiO 2 can be given.
- the effect obtained in the present embodiment is that the positive electrode active material contains nickel as compared with the case where the positive electrode active material is a lithium composite oxide not containing nickel (LiCoO 2 or LiMnO 2 in the above specific example).
- the lithium composite oxide (LiNiO 2 or LiCoNiO 2 in the above specific example) is larger. This will be described in a second modification described later.
- the conductive agent for the positive electrode 4 can be used without particular limitation as long as it is a known material as the conductive agent for the positive electrode of the lithium ion secondary battery.
- Examples of the conductive agent of the positive electrode 4 include graphites such as graphite or carbon blacks such as acetylene black.
- the conductive agent may be 1 part by mass or more and 20 parts by mass or less with respect to 100 parts by mass of the positive electrode active material.
- the binder of the positive electrode 4 an organic material having a melting point or softening point higher than 200 ° C. (hereinafter may be simply referred to as “the organic material”, “this organic material”, or “organic material”) is used. Since the melting point of PvdF, which has been preferred as a binder for the positive electrode, is 172 ° C., this organic material has better heat resistance than PvdF. Therefore, the heat resistance of the binder of the positive electrode 4 can be improved as compared with the case where PvdF is used as the binder of the positive electrode.
- the binder of the positive electrode 4 is preferably composed of the above organic material (an organic material having a melting point or softening point higher than 200 ° C.). However, if the occupied volume of the organic material in the positive electrode mixture layer 4B is 50% or more of the occupied volume of the binder in the positive electrode 4 in the positive electrode mixture layer 4B, the heat resistance of the binder in the positive electrode 4 is minimized. Can be secured.
- the occupied volume of the material (PvdF or the like) inferior to the organic material in the positive electrode mixture layer 4B is less than 50% (preferably 30% or less) of the occupied volume of the binder of the positive electrode 4, A material having lower heat resistance than the organic material may be present in the positive electrode mixture layer 4B.
- organic material having a melting point higher than 200 ° C. examples include polyimides, polyimide derivatives, PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), and copolymers containing TFE (tetrafluoroethylene) units.
- organic material having a softening point higher than 200 ° C. examples include acrylic rubber or fluorine rubber having a relatively high molecular weight and high heat resistance.
- the binder of the positive electrode 4 may be at least one of polyimide, a polyimide derivative, a copolymer containing PTFE and a TFE unit, acrylic rubber and fluororubber, or a small amount (for example, the positive electrode mixture layer 4B).
- the volume occupied by PvdF may be 30% or less of the volume occupied by the binder in the positive electrode mixture layer 4B).
- the binder content of the positive electrode 4 is preferably 1 part by mass or more and 10 parts by mass or less with respect to 100 parts by mass of the positive electrode active material. That is, when the binder of the positive electrode 4 is made of the organic material, the content of the organic material is preferably 1 part by mass or more and 10 parts by mass or less with respect to 100 parts by mass of the positive electrode active material. Even when the binder of the positive electrode 4 contains a small amount of PvdF, the content of the organic material may be 1 part by mass or more and 10 parts by mass or less with respect to 100 parts by mass of the positive electrode active material. . Thereby, since the content rate of the positive electrode active material in the positive electrode mixture layer 4B can be secured, it is possible to prevent the battery capacity from being lowered. Moreover, the positive electrode active material can be adhered to the positive electrode current collector 4A.
- the distribution of the binder in the positive electrode mixture layer 4B is not particularly limited.
- the binder of the positive electrode 4 may be dispersed in the positive electrode mixture layer 4B. Further, as will be described in a first modification described below, the binder of the positive electrode 4 is more in the positive electrode mixture layer 4B than the portion of the positive electrode mixture layer 4B that is in contact with the surface of the positive electrode current collector 4A. Many may exist on the surface.
- FIG. 5 is a flowchart showing a method for producing the positive electrode 4 in the present embodiment.
- the positive electrode 4 in the present embodiment is manufactured according to the following method. Below, the preparation method of the positive electrode 4 in the case of using the copolymer containing a PTFE or a TFE unit as a binder of the positive electrode 4 is demonstrated first, Next, a polyimide or a polyimide derivative is used as a binder of the positive electrode 4. A method for producing the positive electrode 4 when used will be described, and then a method for producing the positive electrode 4 when acrylic rubber or fluororubber is used as the binder for the positive electrode 4 will be described.
- a positive electrode mixture paste is prepared by mixing a positive electrode active material, a conductive agent, and a copolymer containing PTFE or TFE units. At this time, a small amount of PvdF may be mixed into the positive electrode mixture paste.
- step S101 the positive electrode mixture paste is applied on both surfaces of the positive electrode current collector 4A.
- a positive electrode active material, a conductor, and a copolymer containing PTFE or TFE units are provided on the surface of the positive electrode current collector 4A (step (a)).
- step S102 the positive electrode mixture paste is dried.
- step S103 the positive electrode current collector provided with the positive electrode active material on the surface is rolled (step (b)).
- the positive electrode active material is pulverized. Therefore, the surface area of the positive electrode active material increases rapidly due to rolling. Since rolling is usually performed in the air, carbon dioxide, moisture, and the like in the air are adsorbed on the surface of the rapidly increasing positive electrode active material. When carbon dioxide and moisture are adsorbed on the surface of the positive electrode active material, the carbon dioxide, moisture, and the positive electrode active material react with each other, and as a result, a compound that induces an increase in internal pressure is generated on the surface of the positive electrode active material.
- step S104 the rolled positive electrode current collector is subjected to heat treatment (step (b)).
- the heat treatment method include heat treatment using hot air, IH (Induction Heating), infrared rays, or electric heat.
- a method of contacting a hot roll heated to a predetermined temperature with a rolled positive electrode current collector is selected. It is preferable to do. If heat treatment after rolling is performed using a hot roll, the heat treatment time can be shortened and energy loss can be minimized.
- the heat treatment temperature is higher than the softening temperature of the positive electrode current collector 4A, 200 ° C. or higher, and lower than the melting point or softening point of the organic material in the positive electrode mixture layer 4B.
- the heat treatment time may be, for example, from 0.1 seconds to 5 hours, and preferably from 10 seconds to 1 hour.
- gas is generated from the positive electrode as shown in FIG. Specifically, in the rolling step, a compound that induces an increase in internal pressure is generated on the surface of the positive electrode active material.
- the above compound (a compound that induces an increase in internal pressure) is decomposed to generate carbon dioxide and water.
- This heat treatment is preferably performed after rolling rather than before rolling for the following reasons.
- first adsorbate carbon dioxide or moisture in the air
- carbon dioxide or moisture in the air (referred to as “second adsorbate”) is adsorbed on the surface of the positive electrode active material. Therefore, when heat treatment is performed after rolling, not only a gas derived from the first adsorbate but also a gas derived from the second adsorbate is generated.
- the surface area of the positive electrode active material increases rapidly. Therefore, since the second adsorbate is overwhelmingly more than the first adsorbate, the gas derived from the second adsorbate is overwhelmingly more than the gas derived from the first adsorbate. . Therefore, in the positive electrode manufactured by performing heat treatment before rolling, a great amount of carbon dioxide or moisture remains adsorbed on the surface of the positive electrode active material. Therefore, when a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery manufactured using such a positive electrode is stored under high temperature in a charged state, or against a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery manufactured using such a positive electrode. If charging / discharging is repeated, a large amount of gas may be generated. From the above, it is preferable to perform heat treatment after rolling rather than heat treatment before rolling.
- the heat treatment temperature after rolling is lower than the melting point of the copolymer containing PTFE or TFE units, it is possible to prevent the copolymer containing PTFE or TFE units from melting in the heat treatment after rolling. Moreover, since the heat treatment temperature after rolling is lower than the decomposition temperature of the copolymer containing PTFE or TFE units, it is possible to prevent the copolymer containing PTFE or TFE units from being decomposed during the heat treatment after rolling.
- the tensile elongation of the positive electrode 4 can be increased, and the average crystal grain size of the aluminum particles contained in the positive electrode current collector 4A can be increased.

- the heat treatment after rolling in the present embodiment when the heat treatment after rolling in the present embodiment is performed, the gas adsorbed on the surface of the positive electrode active material can be removed from the surface of the positive electrode active material. Therefore, even if the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery according to the present embodiment is charged and stored at a high temperature or repeatedly charged and discharged with respect to the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, gas is generated from the positive electrode 4. Can be prevented. If the heat treatment after rolling in this embodiment is performed as described above, the main cause of the problem is that the internal pressure of the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery increases when the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery in a charged state is stored at a high temperature.
- the factor can be removed, and the main factor causing the problem that the internal pressure of the non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery increases when the non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery is repeatedly charged and discharged can be eliminated. Therefore, even if the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery according to this embodiment is stored in a charged state at a high temperature or repeatedly charged and discharged with respect to the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, the battery swells and the explosion-proof valve Leakage from can be prevented. Therefore, it is possible to prevent the occurrence of an internal short circuit due to crushing.
- the inventors of the present invention explain why the tensile elongation of the positive electrode 4 is increased to 3% or more by the heat treatment after rolling, and the reason for the aluminum particles contained in the positive electrode current collector 4A by the heat treatment after rolling.
- the reason why the average crystal grain size is increased from about 0.5 ⁇ m to 1 ⁇ m or more is considered to be that when the heat treatment after rolling is performed, the positive electrode current collector 4A softens. What the present inventors consider as the reason why the tensile elongation of the positive electrode 4 increases to 3% or more by heat treatment after rolling will be described below.
- the positive electrode mixture layer is formed on the surface of the positive electrode current collector, the tensile elongation rate of the positive electrode is not regulated by the inherent tensile elongation rate of the positive electrode current collector itself.
- the positive electrode mixture layer has a lower tensile elongation than the positive electrode current collector. Therefore, when the positive electrode not subjected to the heat treatment after rolling is extended, a large crack is generated in the positive electrode mixture layer and at the same time, the positive electrode is broken. This is thought to be because the tensile stress in the positive electrode mixture layer increases with the elongation of the positive electrode, and the tensile stress applied to the positive electrode current collector is concentrated at the location where the large crack occurs, thereby breaking the positive electrode current collector. .
- the positive electrode current collector 4A when the positive electrode 4 subjected to heat treatment after rolling is stretched, the positive electrode current collector 4A is softened, so that the positive electrode 4 continues to grow while generating a large number of minute cracks in the positive electrode mixture layer 4B.
- the positive electrode 4 is broken. This is because the tensile stress applied to the positive electrode current collector 4A is dispersed by the generation of minute cracks, so that the generation of cracks in the positive electrode mixture layer 4B has little influence on the positive electrode current collector 4A, and at the same time as the generation of cracks.
- the positive electrode current collector 4A breaks when the positive electrode 4 continues to grow to a certain size without breaking and the tensile stress reaches a certain value (a value close to the tensile elongation inherent in the positive electrode current collector 4A). It is thought that.
- the tensile elongation of the positive electrode 4 is 3% or more.
- the average crystal grain size of the aluminum particles in the positive electrode current collector 4A is considered to be 1 ⁇ m or more and 10 ⁇ m or less.
- the electrode group 8 can be manufactured without deformation of the positive electrode 4.
- the configuration of the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery is not limited to the above description.
- the battery case may be cylindrical.
