Abstract

La invención se relaciona a un proceso para preparar compuestos de polimetilol de la fórmula (I) en la cual R es en cada caso independientemente un grupo metilol o un grupo alquilo adicional que tiene de 1 a 22 átomos de carbono o un grupo arilo o aralquilo que tiene de 6 a 22 átomos de carbono, al condensar aldehídos que tienen de 2 a 24 átomos de carbono en una reacción aldol con formaldehído utilizando aminas terciarias como un catalizador para dar alcanalos de la fórmula (II) en la cual R es en cada caso independiente como se define anteriormente, y la hidrogenación subsiguiente de la misma. Lo que es especial e ingenioso acerca de este proceso es que la reacción aldol se lleva a cabo con una solución acuosa de formaldehído que tiene un contenido de ácido fórmico de < 150 ppm y de preferencia < 100 ppm. En este proceso, la formación de subproductos puede evitarse ventajosamente en una manera controlada, por lo tanto se incrementa el rendimiento del compuesto de polimetilol deseado.
