イン変換を使用するディジタル画像信号の伝送装置に関
する。

れている。ディジタルビデオ信号の情報量が多いので、
その伝送データ量を圧縮するための高能率符号化が採用
されることが多い。種々の高能率符号化の中でも、DC
T(Discrete Cosine Transform)の実用化が進んでい
る。

システムでは、係数データのデータ量を量子化によって
目標値以下に制御するバッファリングがなされる。すな
わち、所定期間で発生した係数データを量子化ステップ
で割算する場合、この量子化ステップの大きさによっ
て、所定期間の発生データ量が目標値以下に抑えられ
る。このデータ量制御、すなわち、バッファリング処理
は、好ましくは、係数データの振幅の分布の傾向、およ
び再生画像に画質に与える影響を考慮して適応的になさ
れる。

量子化を粗くすると、復元画像の解像度の劣化が目立つ
問題がある。
ビィティを検出する時に、エッジ情報を含むブロック
は、アクティビィティが低いものとして検出することが
できるディジタル画像信号の伝送装置を提供することに
ある。
画像信号を直交変換および可変長符号により符号化し、
符号化出力を伝送するようにしたディジタル画像信号の
伝送装置において、ディジタル画像信号を所定のブロッ
ク構造に変換するためのブロック化回路と、ブロック化
回路と結合され、ディジタル画像信号のブロック毎に直
交変換を行うための直交変換回路と、直交変換回路から
の交流分のデータが供給され、ブロック毎のアクティビ
ィティを検出する回路であって、交流分のデータの比較
的高域の複数のデータの絶対値を複数のしきい値と比較
することで、アクティビィティをクラス分けするように
した回路と、直交変換回路からのデータを量子化するた
めの回路と、量子化回路と結合され、アクティビィティ
のクラスに適応して量子化ステップを制御するための制
御回路と、量子化回路の出力が供給される可変長符号化
回路とからなるディジタル画像信号の伝送装置である。
出するための回路が交流分のデータの比較的高域の複数
のデータの絶対値を複数のしきい値と比較することで、
アクティビィティをクラス分けし、また、全ての交流分
のデータの絶対値と複数のしきい値よりも充分大きなし
きい値とを比較し、大きなしきい値を超えるものは、最
もアクティビィティが高いクラスとするように構成され
ている。
幅が互いに異なる複数の量子化ステップから制御回路に
よって選択されたもので直交変換回路の出力を量子化
し、アクティビィティのクラスに応答して量子化ステッ
プが変更される。
各出力のブロック配列の位置に応じて、量子化ステップ
を変更する、エリア制御を行い、さらに、色信号に関し
て、アクティビィティのクラスに応答してエリア制御が
変更される。
ティビィティのクラス分けを行う時に、そのブロックの
全係数データを用いずに、エッジ情報が含まれる時に発
生し易いものを除外する。これによって、エッジ情報を
含むブロックは、アクティビィティが低いと判定され、
量子化が細かくされる。
照して説明する。図1は、ディジタルVTRの記録側に
設けられるビデオデータの処理回路の構成を示す。図1
において、1で示す入力端子には、ディジタル化された
ビデオデータが供給される。このビデオデータがブロッ
ク化回路2に供給される。ブロック化回路2では、イン
ターレス走査の順序のビデオデータが例えば(8×8)
のDCTブロックの構造のデータに変換される。すなわ
ち、時間的に連続する第1および第2フィールドの空間
的に同一位置の(4×8)のブロックを二つ組み合わせ
て(8×8)のブロックが形成される。(8×8)のブ
ロックでは、奇数番目のライン上の画素データが第1フ
ィールドに含まれるものであり、偶数番目のライン上の
画素データが第2フィールドに含まれるものである。
路3に供給される。シャフリング回路3では、ドロップ
アウト、テープの傷、ヘッドクロッグ等によって、エラ
ーが集中し、画質の劣化が目立つのを防止するように、
1フレーム内で、複数のマクロブロックを単位として、
空間的な位置を元のものと異ならせる処理、すなわち、
シャフリングがなされる。この例では、シャフリング単
位とバッファリング単位とを等しく、5マクロブロック
としている。シャフリング回路3の出力がDCT(コサ
イン変換)回路4および動き検出回路5に供給される。
DCT回路4からは(8×8)の係数データ(すなわ
ち、直流分DC、交流分ACの係数データ)が発生す
る。このDCT回路4は、後述のように、動きブロック
については、(8×8)のブロックに含まれる(4×
8)のブロックに関してフィールド内DCTを行うよう
に切り替えられる。
(8×8)の係数データを複数ブロック集めたものであ
る。例えば525/60システムのコンポーネント方式
の(Y:U:V=4:1:1)のビデオデータの場合に
は、図2Aに示すように、1フレーム内の同一位置の、
4個のYブロックと1個のUブロックと1個のVブロッ
クとの計6ブロックが1マクロブロックを構成する。サ
ンプリング周波数が4fsc(fsc:カラーサブキャリア
周波数)の場合では、1フレームの画像が(910サン
プル×525ライン)であり、その内の有効データが
(720サンプル×480ライン)とされる。上述のコ
ンポーネント方式の場合には、1フレームの全ブロック
数は、(720×6/4)×480÷(8×8)=81
00として求められる。従って、8100÷6=135
0が1フレーム内のマクロブロックの個数である。
式の(Y:U:V=4:2:0)のビデオデータの場合
には、図2Bに示すように、1フレーム内の同一位置
の、4個のYブロックと1個のUブロックと1個のVブ
ロックとの計6ブロックが1マクロブロックを構成す
る。
データの内の直流分DCが圧縮されずに後段の回路に伝
送され、その内の63個の交流分がバッファ6を介して
量子化回路7に供給される。交流分の係数データは、図
3に示すように、ジグザク走査の順で次数が低い交流分
からこれが高いものに向かって順に伝送される。また、
この交流分の係数データがアクティビィティ検出回路8
およびデータ量見積り器9にも供給される。バッファ6
は、見積り器9で適切な量子化番号QNoが決定される
のに必要な時間と対応する遅延量を有している。見積り
器9からの量子化番号QNoは、量子化回路7に供給さ
れるとともに、後段に伝送される。
生は、フレーム内のDCT変換の場合であって、若し、
動き検出回路5によって、動きがあると検出されると、
フィールド内のDCTの処理が選択される。すなわち、
時間的に連続する第1および第2フィールド内の同一位
置の(4×8)の二つのブロック毎に、DCTを行うの
がフィールド内DCTである。若し、そのブロックに関
してフィールド間で動きがあると動き検出回路5が検出
すると、この検出に応答してフレーム内DCTからフィ
ールド内DCTに変更される。動き検出回路5は、(8
×8)のブロックの画像データをアダマール変換した時
の垂直方向の係数データに基づいて静止/動きの判定を
ブロック毎に行う。動き検出としては、他にフィールド
差の絶対値に基づいて行うものでも良い。

ールドに関しての(4×8)の係数データとが発生し、
これらは、図4に示すように、上下に位置する(8×
8)の配列として扱われる。第1フィールドの係数デー
タの中には、直流成分DC1が含まれる。第2フィール
ドにも、同様に直流成分DC2が含まれる。これらの各
フィールドの係数データを別個に扱うと、フレーム内D
CTとフィールド内DCTとで、以降の処理を別個にせ
ざるを得ない。その結果、ハードウエアの規模の増加等
の問題が生じる。そこで、この実施例では、第2フィー
ルドの直流成分DC2に代えて、差分直流成分ΔDC2
(=DC1−DC2)を伝送する。動き検出回路5から
の検出信号(動きフラグ)Mがデータ量見積り器9に供
されるとともに、後段に伝送される。この動きがある時
の処理については、後でより詳細に説明する。

この量子化ステップが見積り器9からの量子化番号QN
oによって決定される。ディジタルVTRの場合では、
編集等の処理が1フィールドあるいは1フレーム単位で
なされるので、1フィールドあるいは1フレーム当りの
発生データ量が目標値以下となる必要がある。DCTお
よび可変長符号化で発生するデータ量は、符号化の対象
の絵柄によって変化するので、1フィールドあるいは1
フレーム期間より短いバッファリング単位の発生データ
量を目標値以下とするためのバッファリング処理がなさ
れる。バッファリング単位を短くするのは、バッファリ
ングのためのメモリ容量を低減するなど、バッファリン
グ回路の簡略化のためである。この例では、5マクロブ
ロック(=30DCTブロック)がバッファリング単位
とされている。
述のように、DCTブロックの単位で、絵柄の細かさを
調べ、そのDCTブロックのアクティビィティを4段階
にクラス分けし、そのクラスを示す2ビットのアクティ
ビィティコードATを発生する。検出結果が見積り器9
に供給され、アクティビィティコードATが後段に伝送
される。
1に供給され、ランレングス符号化、ハフマン符号化等
がなされる。例えば係数データの“0”の連続数である
ランレングスと係数データの値とをROM内に格納され
たハフマンテーブルに与え、可変長コード(符号化出
力)を発生する2次元ハフマン符号化が採用される。可
変長符号化回路11からのコード信号が後段に供給され
る。
11で参照されるのと同一のハフマンテーブル12が設
けられている。このハフマンテーブル12は、可変長符
号化した時の出力コードのビット数データを発生する。
見積り器9で最適な量子化ステップの組が判定され、そ
の判定出力がセレクタ10に供給される。セレクタ10
は、量子化回路7がこの量子化ステップの組で係数デー
タを量子化するように制御する。これとともに、量子化
ステップの組を識別するための量子化番号QNoが後段
に伝送される。
(直流分データ、可変長符号化出力、量子化番号QN
o、動きフラグM、アクティビィティコードAT)が後
段のフレーム化回路において、エラー訂正符号化の処理
と記録データのフレーム構造への変換の処理がなされ
る。フレーム化回路からは、シンクブロック構成のデー
タが現れる。記録データは、チャンネル符号化回路、記
録アンプを介して2個の回転ヘッドに供給され、磁気テ
ープ上に記録される。

トの内の77バイトがデータエリアであって、最後の8
バイトが積符号の内符号のパリティである。データエリ

の量子化番号QNoおよび補助コードAUXが位置す
る。その後の75バイトがデータ(可変長コードあるい
は外符号化のパリティ)である。

ブロック毎に検出された動きの有無を示す1ビットのフ

リアからはみ出したAC−H成分が先頭のAC−Hエリ
アから順に詰め込まれる。AC−Lエリア内に空きエリ
ア、すなわち、可変ACエリアが存在すれば、ここに
も、はみ出したAC−H成分が詰められる。
識別ビット、記録データの種類を示す2ビット、シンク
ブロックアドレス、パリティバイトIDPを含む。フレ
ームIDは、フレーム毎に反転する。識別ビットは、こ
の実施例のディジタルVTR用のフォーマットとそれ以
外のフォーマット、例えばデータ記憶装置のフォーマッ
トとを識別する。これが“1”の時は、ディジタルVT
R用のフォーマットを意味し、これが“0”の時は、他
のフォーマットを意味する。記録データ識別ビットは、
記録データの種類(ビデオ、オーディオ等)を表す。さ
らに、シンクブロックアドレスは、1フレームのデータ
を含み、複数本のトラックに分割して記録される全シン
クブロックに対して、通番で符されたアドレスである。
Xも、一種のID信号であって、ビデオ信号の放送形
式、オーディオのモード等の情報が有している。データ
エリア内に量子化番号QNo、補助コードAUXを記録
しているのは、ID信号のエラー訂正符号よりも、デー
タエリア内のデータに関するエラー訂正符号の方がより
訂正能力が高いからである。

る。しかしながら、視覚的効果を考慮すると、必ずしも
上述の丸め処理が最良と言えない場合がある。この実施
例では、量子化時に、高域の係数データが粗く量子化さ
れるようにされている。通常、高域の成分は、小さな値
であるので、上述の丸めによって、量子化後では、高域
成分の値が全て0となる。このことは、後段の可変長符
号化の効率を増加させる。
数が現れる場合もあり、例えば係数の値の8は、図6A
から分かるように、16の値に丸められる。これは、高
域係数を増幅することと等価で、視覚上、ノイズとな
り、画質を劣化させる。この問題を改善するために、図
6Bに示すような丸め処理が好ましい。

量子化ステップが粗くても、歪みが目立たない。一方、
平坦な絵柄(アクティビィティが低い)ブロックは、粗
く量子化すると、歪みが目立ち易い。従って、その総ビ
ット数が所定値以下に制御されるバッファリング単位
(30DCTブロック)内で、アクティビィティが高い
ブロックに対する量子化は、粗いものとし、アクティビ
ィティが低いブロックに対する量子化は、細かいものと
することは、有効である。
子化しても、歪みが目立たないと述べたが、そのブロッ
クがエッジ情報を含む時には、これが成り立たない。む
しろ、エッジ情報に対しては、細かな量子化が好まし
い。ブロック内で全体的に細かな絵柄を含むもののみを
アクティビィティが高いと判定した方が好ましい。この
点を考慮して、アクティビィティ検出のために用いる係
数データを図8Aに示すようなパターンでもって、高域
のものに限定している。

1行のみに係数データが生じる。従って、第1行の係数
データは、アクティビィティ検出の対象から除外され
る。また、図10Bに示すように、水平方向のエッジが
含まれるブロックでは、第1列のみに係数データが発生
する。従って、第1列の係数データは、アクティビィテ
ィ検出の対象から除外される。また、垂直方向のエッジ
を含む画像に多少の動きがあって、フレーム内DCTが
された時には、図10Cに示すように、垂直方向の高周
波成分が増加し、左下コーナの係数データの値が大きく
なる。この動きの影響を軽減するために、この部分が除
外される。以上の結果、図8Aに示す検出対象範囲が設
定される。なお、ロジック33に動きフラグMが供給さ
れ、動き検出回路5によって検出された動きブロック
は、一義的にクラス0と分類される。

考慮した量子化について説明する。

用意されている。各組は、0〜7の各エリアに対応する

の量子化ステップの組は、(1,1,1,SQ,2,2
×SQ,4,4×SQ)である。図13に示す量子化テ
ーブルは、量子化番号QNoが増加するに伴って、量子
化ステップが大きくなる変化を有している。言い換える
と、量子化番号QNoが増加すると、量子化が粗いもの
へ変化する。全ての量子化ステップが2のべき乗で表現
されているので、これらの量子化ステップで係数データ
を割算する回路として簡単なものを使用できる。
子化と、輝度データおよび色データの相違を考慮した量
子化とを説明する。アクティビィティ検出回路8の前述
のようなクラス分けによって、アクティビィティクラス
の0、1、2、3の何れかに各DCTブロックが分類さ
れている。一つの量子化番号がqに設定された時に、ア
クティビィティクラスに従って量子化番号の調整がなさ
れる。アクティビィティがより高いクラス2および3で
は、量子化番号がq+1、q+2に変更され、アクティ
ビィティがより低いクラス0では、量子化番号がq−1
に変更される。その結果、アクティビィティの高低に応
じて量子化ステップを制御できる。この調整時に、量子
化番号が負になったり、あるいはこれが16以上になる
場合には、量子化番号が0あるいは15にクリップされ
る。
度の劣化は、目立たないので、色信号の周波数特性を低
下させて、それによって生じた余裕を輝度信号に振り向
ける処理がエリアシフトである。輝度(Y)信号に関し
ては、エリアシフトが利用できない(図14中でN/A
で示す)。色信号(U、V)に関して、アクティビィテ
ィクラスに適応してエリアシフトがなされる。図14中
のエリアシフトの数字は、元のエリア番号に対して加算
される値である。7を超える加算結果は、7にクリップ
される。
〜40n がそれぞれ図13に示す量子化テーブルを備え
る量子化回路である。nは、量子化テーブル内の量子化
ステップの組の数(この例では、n=16)と対応して
いる。これらの量子化回路401 〜40n は、コントロ
ーラ41によって、量子化動作がそれぞれ制御される。
コントローラ41には、アクティビィティ検出回路8か
らのアクティビィティコードATおよび動きフラグMが
供給される。量子化回路401 〜40n の出力データが
スキャン回路421 〜42n に供給される。スキャン回
路は、量子化回路の出力の順序を動きフラグMに応答し
て切り替える。
長符号化回路431 〜43n に供給される。可変長符号
化回路がハフマンテーブル12を参照して、例えば2次
元ハフマン符号化を行う。このハフマンテーブル12
は、本線信号に対する可変長符号化回路11で用いられ
るのと同一であるが、データ量のみを求めるために、出
力ビット数が分かるテーブルである。可変長符号化回路
の符号化出力がバッファ441 〜44n に供給される。
これらのバッファは、5マクロブロック毎にリセットさ
れ、5マクロブロックに関してのデータ量を累算する。

が所定値以下となる量子化回路が決定される。この出力
端子46に発生する判定出力がセレクタ10(図1参
照)に供給され、セレクタ10が量子化回路7の量子化
ステップの組を指定する。これとともに、量子化番号Q
Noが出力される。見積り器9としては、図11に示す
構成に限られず、異なる量子化ステップで順次量子化を
行う方式等、種々の構成のものを採用できる。

の係数データが供給され、他方の入力端子bには、減算
回路48の出力データが供給される。スイッチ回路47
は、制御信号CTで制御される。減算回路48には、現
フィールドの直流分DC2が供給され、遅延回路49か
らの前フィールドの直流分DC1が減算される。この減
算回路48から差分直流データΔDC2が発生する。動
きブロックのために、フィールド内DCTがなされる時
に、第2フィールドの直流分DC2の代わりに差分直流
データΔDC2をスイッチ回路47が選択する(図4参
照)。
ータを形成する一つの目的は、値を小さくして係数デー
タが粗く量子化されるのを防止することにある。他の目
的は、値を小さくすることによって、量子化歪みの影響
を少なくすることである。フィールド間で、シーンチェ
ンジが発生した場合を除き、フィールド相関が存在する
ので、殆どの場合、差分直流データΔDC2の値は、0
に近い極めて小さな値であり、これらの目的を達成でき
る。

に、量子化回路401 〜40n を制御する。コントロー
ラ41は、アクティビィティコードAT(2ビット)を
受け取って、量子化番号QNoの調整を行う。係数デー
タの順序が分かっているので、1ブロック内の係数デー
タの時系列中の位置に応じてエリア規定がなされる。ま
た、動きブロックの場合には、フィールド内DCTがさ
れているので、係数データの分布がフレーム内DCTと
異なっている。従って、エリア規定を図12に示すフレ
ーム内DCTとは異なる、図15に示すものに変更す
る。コントローラ41が動きフラグMを受け取ること
で、図15に示すエリア規定が可能である。さらに、輝
度信号と色信号とが時系列中の位置で分かっているの
で、色信号に対するエリアシフトの制御を行うことがで
きる。
内DCTの場合に、図3に示すジグザクスキャンでもっ
て、係数データを順次出力する。この出力順序を動きブ
ロックの係数データに適用すると、0−ランの長さ(ラ
ンレングス)が短くなる等、後段の可変長符号化の効率
の低下を招く。そこで、動きブロックの場合には、図1
6に示される番号の順序でスキャン回路が係数データを
出力する。
ア規定およびデータ順序の変更は、図1では、簡単のた
めに示されていないが、本線信号に関しても同様になさ
れる。また、この実施例と異なり、DCT回路4の後段
にインターレス化回路を設け、ここで、フィールド内D
CTで得られた係数データをインターレス走査と同様の
順序に変換するする処理を行うようにしても良い。この
方法によって、それ以降の処理を静止ブロックか、動き
ブロックであるかを区別しないで行うことができ、制御
および回路を簡単とできる。

かしながら、テープ以外のディスク等の媒体を使用する
場合にも、この発明を適用できる。

量子化が粗くなることを防止できる。また、エッジ情報
が含まれるブロックは、アクティビィティが低いものと
して検出され、エッジ情報が量子化で失われることを防
止できる。さらに、エリア制御を行う量子化において、
色信号に関しては、アクティビィティに応じてエリアを
シフトすることにより、画質の劣化を抑えながら、圧縮
の効率を上げることができる。

Claims (5)
- 【請求項1】 ディジタル画像信号を直交変換および可
変長符号により符号化し、上記符号化出力を伝送するよ
うにしたディジタル画像信号の伝送装置において、 上記ディジタル画像信号を所定のブロック構造に変換す
るためのブロック化手段と、 上記ブロック化手段と結合され、上記ディジタル画像信
号のブロック毎に直交変換を行うための直交変換手段
と、 上記直交変換手段からの交流分のデータが供給され、上
記ブロック毎のアクティビィティを検出する手段であっ
て、上記交流分のデータの比較的高域の複数のデータの
絶対値を複数のしきい値と比較することで、アクティビ
ィティをクラス分けするようにした手段と、 上記直交変換手段からのデータを量子化するための手段
と、 上記量子化手段と結合され、上記アクティビィティのク
ラスに適応して量子化ステップを制御するための制御手
段と、 上記量子化手段の出力が供給される可変長符号化手段と
からなるディジタル画像信号の伝送装置。 - 【請求項2】 ディジタル画像信号を直交変換および可
変長符号により符号化し、上記符号化出力を伝送するよ
うにしたディジタル画像信号の伝送装置において、 上記ディジタル画像信号を所定のブロック構造に変換す
るためのブロック化手段と、 上記ブロック化手段と結合され、上記ディジタル画像信
号のブロック毎に直交変換を行うための直交変換手段
と、 上記直交変換手段からの交流分のデータが供給され、上
記ブロック毎のアクティビィティを検出する手段であっ
て、上記交流分のデータの比較的高域の複数のデータの
絶対値を複数のしきい値と比較することで、アクティビ
ィティをクラス分けし、また、全ての上記交流分のデー
タの絶対値と上記複数のしきい値よりも充分大きなしき
い値とを比較し、上記大きなしきい値を超えるものは、
最もアクティビィティが高いクラスとするための手段
と、 所定期間の伝送データ量が所定値以下になるように、上
記直交変換手段からのデータを量子化するための手段
と、 上記量子化手段と結合され、上記アクティビィティのク
ラスに適応して量子化ステップを制御するための制御手
段と、 上記量子化手段の出力が供給される可変長符号化手段と
からなるディジタル画像信号の伝送装置。 - 【請求項3】 請求項1あるいは請求項2記載のディジ
タル画像信号の伝送装置であって、 上記量子化手段は、量子化ステップの幅が互いに異なる
複数の量子化ステップから上記制御手段によって選択さ
れたもので上記直交変換手段の出力を量子化し、上記ア
クティビィティのクラスに応答して上記量子化ステップ
が変更されることを特徴とするディジタル画像信号の伝
送装置。 - 【請求項4】 請求項1あるいは請求項2記載のディジ
タル画像信号の伝送装置であって、 上記制御手段は、上記直交変換手段の各出力のブロック
配列の位置に応じて、上記量子化ステップを変更する、
エリア制御を行い、さらに、色信号に関して、上記アク
ティビィティのクラスに応答して上記エリア制御が変更
されることを特徴とするディジタル画像信号の伝送装
置。 - 【請求項5】 請求項1あるいは請求項2記載のディジ
タル画像信号の伝送装置であって、 上記量子化手段は、上記直交変換手段の出力のしきい値
に対する大小関係に応じて丸め処理が変更されることを
特徴とするディジタル画像信号の伝送装置。
