Abstract
バにおいて1550nm波長ウインドウ内の所定の波長におけ
る光源を用いた伝送システムを提供すること。 【構成】 分散補償光ファイバが、1520〜1565nm波長ウ
インドウにおける低分散動作に適した伝送リンクを形成
するために1290nmから1330nmまでの範囲内の波長におけ
る零分散動作のために最適化された従来の単一モ−ド伝
送ファイバとともに使用するために適合される。それら
の分散補償光ファイバは、-20ps/nm-kmよりも負方向に
大きい分散および1520〜1565nm領域内の波長における1d
b/kmより小さい減衰を与え得る。それらの分散補償ファ
イバうちのあるものは、伝送ファイバの分散対波長傾斜
を補償するために、1520〜1565nm領域内で負の傾斜を有
する分散対波長関係をも呈示する。この分散補償ファイ
バは、それによってシステム中に導入される減衰を克服
するようになされた補償器を形成するために、ファイバ
増幅器と結合されうる。1つの実施例では、分散補償フ
ァイバは分布ファイバ増幅器である。
Description
は実質的に異なっている伝送リンク上での低分散、低減
衰単一モ−ド伝送のためのシステムおよびそのシステム
に用いられる装置に関する。
重大な要因は減衰である。シリカをベ−スとした光ファ
イバの設計および製造においては、光ファイバの減衰性
能は1970年代では0dB/kmであったのが今日では理論
的最小値に近い値まで改善されており、1310nmでは約0.
35db/kmであり、また1550nmでは約0.2dB/kmである。
イバ増幅器が公知であり、そして最近では種々の商用シ
ステムが利用できるようになっている。例えば、Armita
ge,"Three-level fiber laser amplifier: a theoretic
al model", APPLIED OPTICS, Vol. 27, No. 23, Dec.
1, 1988,およびそこで引用されている文献を参照された
い。これらのファイバ増幅器はファイバの減衰に基因す
るリンク長制限を実質的に軽減することができる。今日
までのところ、唯一の実用ファイバ増幅器は1520 - 156
5 nmの近辺で動作し、その範囲ではEr+3ド−パント・イ
オンに遷移が存在する。
形成する光ファイバにおける材料分散および導波路分散
に基因して生ずる全色分散(total chromatic dispersi
on)である。ガラスファイバ導波路中での光の速度はそ
の光の波長の関数であるから、分散はある範囲の波長を
含むパルスに対するパルス拡散の原因となる。パルス広
がりはファイバ分散、ファイバ長、および光源のスペク
トル幅の関数である。光源の波長の範囲が非常に狭いシ
ステムでも、すべての光源の波長範囲が例えばレ−ザ−
光源チャ−プに基因してある程度は広がる。
ド・ファイバでは、全色分散対波長のグラフは主として
材料分散の関数であり、正の傾斜をもったほぼ直線の曲
線として描くことができる。この曲線はほぼ1310 nmで
零交差を有し、1550 nmにおいて約15 ps/nm-kmの値に達
する。Agrawal, Nonlinear Fiber Optics, Academic Pr

従来のファイバでは、分散がほぼ零となる1310 nm付近
で帯域幅が最大となる。これらの従来のファイバは1310
nm付近での動作のために最適化されている(以下で
は、1310 nmでの動作のために最適化されている)と言
われている。
の単一モ−ド・ファイバにおける最小理論減衰は1550 n
mの領域にあり、これはレイリ−散乱および赤外線吸収
に基因する。伝送が1310nmで行なわれる場合には、標準
のステップ・インデックスは1550nmにおける理論最小値
の約1.75倍の減衰を有する。標準ステップ・インデック
ス光ファイバが実質的な分散を生ずる1550nmにおける伝
送では、分散の効果が減衰上の利益を上回るから、リン
ク長は分散で制限される。
(total performance)は分散と減衰との両方の関数で
あるから、1550nmにおける分散を最小限に抑えて、その
波長範囲における最小減衰を利用するための種々の試み
がなされている。分散対波長曲線の零交差を1550nm領域
にシフトする種々の「分散シフト」ファイバ設計("dis
persion-shifted" fiber designs)が開発されている。

零交差の付近で傾斜が低下し、それによって伝送波長の
近傍における比較的広い波長範囲において低分散伝送を
可能にするという利点をも有していることを示してい
る。例えば、Okamoto et al.の米国特許第437264

m-nmから1550nmにおける約-2ps/km-nmまで変化する全分
散対波長曲線を有する分散フラットファイバ設計Cが示
されている。この分散フラット設計は、必要とされる分
散補償ファイバの長さが伝送ファイバの長さの7〜8倍
となるので、1550nmにおける分散補償のためには実用で
きでない。同様の分散対波長曲線がReedの米国特許第4
852968号の第9欄第25〜30行目に記載されて
いる。

l 1982, pp. 183-185はコンピュ−タ・シミュレ−ショ
ンの「ダブル・クラッド」ファイバ("double-clad" fi
bers)における分散フラット化に関するものである。第
85頁の図6は、「短波長零交差が材料分散零交差より
も短い波長に移動されうると考えられる」と著者が主張
する1つのシミュレ−トされたファイバ設計を含んでい
る。零交差を左へとシフトさせることに加えて、このシ
ミュレ−トされた設計は、1450nm波長領域における非常
に急激に負の傾斜と、この領域における-40ps/km-nmよ
り小さい全色分散を示している。Cohen et al.の米国特
許第4435040号は第6欄第45〜54行目に図6
に関する平行開示を含んでいる。

−ラで延長されただけであれば、1550nmにおける値は全
体のスケ−ルの数倍だけ図6の測定スケ−ルからはずれ
ることになるであろう。ケ−ス3のシミュレ−ションは
1310より小さい波長における零交差を生ずることに関す
るものであるから、この文献には1550nm領域に関しては
開示されても暗示されてもいない。
う文献から明らかなことは、全分散曲線の傾斜の絶対値
(約2 ps/nm2-km)は、1310nmにおける伝送に対して最
適化された標準の単一モ−ドファイバの場合の全分散曲
線の傾斜(それは約0.06 ps/nm2-km)よりはるかに大き
いということである。この設計のファイバは1550nmの光
を伝送しないと考えられる。このようなファイバは1dB/
kmよりはるかに大きい、非常に大きな減衰を有するであ
ろう。このシミュレ−トされたファイバは多くの理由で
1550nmウインドウ(約1520nm - 1565nm)における分散
補償ファイバとしては実用できないであろう。第1に、
このファイバは1550nm領域における光を伝送しないであ
ろう。なぜなら、このような非常に大きく負方向に傾斜
した分散対波長曲線を示すであろうとこの実際のファイ
バに対するベンド・エッジ波長(bend-edge wavelengt
h)が1520nmより大幅に低いであろうからである。ベン
ド・エッジ波長というのは、真っ直ぐなファイバが基本
モ−ドを伝播しなくなる波長のことである。
補償効果に、従って従来の1310nm伝送リンクにおける正
の分散を打消すのに必要な分散補償ファイバの長さに大
きな変化を生ずることになる。さらに、著者等はこれら
の「考えれ得る」シミュレ−トされたファイバを製造す
ることの困難性を認めており、「予想されうるように、
ダブル・クラッド光導波路の潜在的に魅力のある特性は
直径および屈折率差に厳しい裕度を要求する」と述べて
いる(第185頁、第1欄、第1段)。
散補償手段を有する伝送リンクに対する技術が提案され
ている。Kogelnick et al.の米国特許第4261639
号は単一モ−ド・ファイバ伝送システムにおけるパルス
分散を最小限におさえるための光パルス等化技術に関す
るもんどえある。(またLin, Kogelnick and Cphen,"Op
tical-pulse equalization of low-dispersion transmi
ssion in single-mode fibers in the 1.3-1.7μm spec

1980, pp. 476-478をも参照されたい。)Kogelnickの
システムでは、伝送ファイバの負の分散がイコライザ・
ファイバの正の分散によって打消される。2本のファイ
バの長さはそれらの分散値の比に基づいて整合される。

において5nmのスペクトル幅を有する信号を伝送して(-
0.8ps/nm-km)(100km)(5nm) =-400psecの分散を生じてい
る。1350nm単一モ−ド・ファイバがイコライザ・ファイ
バとして意図されており、、かつ1550nmにおけるそれの
分散は約16ps/nm-kmであるから、5kmの長さのイコライ
ザ・ファイバが400psecの分散を生じ、かつそれによっ
て合成リンクにおける全分散を打消して零にする。
477頁)では、そこに記載されて例は1510nmで零分散
を有する1kmファイバと、1320nmで零分散を有する0.76k
mファイバを伴った伝送リンクである。この合成ファイ
バの場合の全分散曲線の零交差は1420nmで測定される。
テムは重大な問題を有している。伝送ファイバの零分散
波長と光源波長との差が小さい場合には、その特許で説
明されているように、比較的短い長さの市販のイコライ
ザ・ファイバを使用することができる。しかし、上記Li
n, Kogelnick and Cohenの文献に呈示されているよう
に、波長の差が大きい場合には、それに伴って長い長さ
のイコライザ・ファイバが必要とされ、リンク長が減衰
で制限されるようになる。従って、Kogelnickの考え方
は本発明が関係する基本的な問題を解決することはでき
ない。すなわち、1310nmにおいて零分散を有する伝送フ
ァイバに対して1550nm光源を利用した実用的な伝送シス
テムを実現することはできない。

る。このシステムでは、1310nmで零分散を有する1kmお
よび2.5knの標準の単一モ−ド・ファイバが、1550nmで
零分散を有する分散シフト・ファイバの60kmリンクに付
加され、そのリンクの零分散の波長を1541nmの光源波長
に向ってシフトさせている。改善された伝送性能が測定
されかつグラフ化されている。
分散補償技術であって、SiO2をベ−スとした光ファイバ
における分散を補償するためにフッ化物ガラスをベ−ス
としたファイバを用いることに関するものである。フッ
化物ガラスをベ−スとしたファイバの零分散波長は約20
00nmである。そこに記載された仮想の例では、伝送波長
において合成リンクに対する零分散を実現するために、
1320nmにおいて零分散を有するSiO2をベ−スとした光フ
ァイバ1kmが、2000nmにおいて零分散を有するフッ化物
ガラスをベ−スとしたファイバ0.54kmと結合されている
(第6欄24〜26行目および第7欄48〜59行目を
参照されたい)。標準の分散規定を用いると、1550nmに
おける標準ファイバの分散は、約15 ps-km-nmとなり、
従ってフッ化物ガラスファイバのそれは約-33 ps/km-nm
となるであろう。(分散の定義に対する符号の付け方が
異なっているために、上記米国特許第4969710号
の図4と図5では分散対波長のグラフが上下に反転して
いることに注目されたい。本発明の目的に対しては、Ag
rawal, Nonlinear Fiber Optics, Academic Press,In
c., SanDiego, CA., 1989, p. 10に示されているよう
に、米国で慣用されている符号の付けかたおよび分散方
程式に従ものである)。
39号のイコライザ・ファイバよりも短い長さのフッ化
物ガラスファイバを使用できるようにするが、上記米国
特許第4969710号で要求されているフッ化物ガラ
スファイバは現在一般に入手不能であるという難点があ
る。
55号は約1600nmにおいて零材料分散交差を有するフッ
化物ガラス(62HfF4 - 33BaF2 - 5LaF3)で作成された
ファイバに関するものである(図3参照)。このヨ−ロ
ッパ特許公開公報の図3は、このようなフッ化物ガラス
を用いた分散シフト・ファイバ分布では-10 ps/km-nmの
ように低い分散値が可能でありうることを示唆してい
る。

て多モ−ドファイバのセグメントを用いた分散補償シス
テムに関するものである。米国特許第4913520号
はレ−ザ−出力パルス幅を圧縮するために自己位相変調
を用いるパルス圧縮技法に関するものである。米国特許
第4979234号は飽和半導体レ−ザ−増幅器を用い
たパルス圧縮技法に関するものである。
明の第1の課題は約1310nmにおいて零分散を有する伝送
ファイバを通じて伝送するものであって、1550nmのウイ
ンドウ内に所定の波長の光源を利用した伝送システムの
設計および実施である。今日敷設されているファイバ伝
送リンクのうちの圧倒的多数が約1310nmで零分散を有す
る光ファイバを基礎としているから、この課題は商業的
に重要である。既存の標準的な単一モ−ドの1310nmで最
適化された光ファイバ・ル−トをより高い容量にアップ
グレ−ド(upgrading)することはロングホ−ル(long-
haul)通信提供者にとって非常に関心の高い問題であ
る。
一モ−ド・ファイバを通じて伝送する1550nmシステムの

る標準の単一モ−ド光ファイバよりなる伝送リンク2
(以後これを「1310nm伝送リンク」と呼ぶ)に550nm光
源が入射される。1310nm伝送リンク2の端部において、
信号がエルビウムをド−プされた光ファイバ増幅器(O
FA)3に結合される。このような増幅器は公知であ

される。
この実施例では、1550nm光源21が分散補償ファイバ2
4に入射されるが、これによりOFA25によって増幅
されるべき1550nm信号を先行歪ませるので、1310nm伝送
ファイバ22の後続の長さ部分中を伝播した後で、全色
分散が実質的に打消される。1310nm伝送ファイバ22か

る50kmの伝送ファイバ2に場合には、光源スペクトル幅
のnm当りの全伝送ファイバ分散は750ps/nmである。本発
明の1つの実施例では、分散補償ファイバ4は-30ps/nm
-kmの分散を有しており、50kmの伝送リンクにおける正
の分散を完全に補償するためには、25kmの長さを必要と
する。この長さの値は正確である必要はなく、精密でな
ければ分散を生ずるが、従来のシステムではシステムパ
ラメ−タに応じてアルレベルの分散が許容される。伝送
ファイバおよび分散補償ファイバの長さは特定の伝送波
長(典型的には1520nm-1565nmの範囲)につきシステム
を零交差に微同調するために変化されうる。本発明の分
散補償伝送システムでは、分散補償ファイバの所要長は
1310nm伝送リンク・ファイバの長さの約2分の1より大
きくないことが好ましく、かつ光源スペクトル幅の1550
nmにおけるnm当りの分散補償伝送リンク全体の全分散は
約300ps/nmより小さい。1550nm波長ウインドウにおける
1310nm伝送リンク・ファイバの分散は約±5ps/nm-kmで
あるから、分散補償ファイバの所要長が1310nm伝送リン
ク・ファイバの長さ2分の1より大きくないようにする
ために、伝送波長における分散補償ファイバの分散は-2
0ps/nm-kmまたはそれより負方向に大きい値であること
が好ましい。
約10dBのリンク減衰に対しては、約0.2dB/kmのオ−ダ−
である。分散補償ファイバ4の減衰が0.5dB/kmのオ−ダ
−であれば、分散補償ファイバ4がシステムに12.5dBの
減衰を付加するが、それはOFA3によって用意に除去
されうる。分散補償リンクの減衰は≦1dB/kmであること
が好ましい。

衰で割算した値である。前述の例における分散補償ファ
イバの良度指数は-60ps/nm-kmでおなるであろう(註:
良度指数が低ければ(より負の方向であれば)、性能は
それだけ良くなる)。
実施できるようにするためには、良度指数が-40pn/nm-k
mまたはそれより負方向に大きい値の範囲でなければな
らず、好ましくは-120ps/nm-kmより負方向に大きくなけ
ればならない。これらの範囲は、既存の通信エンクロ−
ジャにおけるコストおよびパッケ−ジングに関して分散
補償ファイバを実用的な長さに保持している場合に付加
されうえう最大システム減衰に基づいている。好ましく
は、分散補償ファイバの長さによって付加される最大減
衰は<30dBであり、伝送ファイバにおける損失を同時に
克服する1つまたは2つの増幅器でもって損失が克服
(補償)され得るようになされるべきである。

補償したことから生ずる問題と結合されたベンド・エッ
ジによって約0〜1.2ps/nm2-kmに制限っされる。整合し
たクラッド標準単一モ−ド・ファイバではDtfは約15ps/
nm-kmであるが、この値は異なるファイバ設計および155
0nm波長ウインドウ(1520nm〜1565nm)内の異なる伝送
波長に対して変化する。デルタおよびコア半径のような
標準単一モ−ド・ファイバの設計パラメ−タおよび1550
nm波長ウインドウ内で選択された公称伝送波長に依存し
て、その1550nm波長ウインドウ内ではDtf = 15 ± 5 ps
/nm-kmである。

・リングとの間に含んでいる。コア・モ−トの屈折率凹
みはコア・モ−トに例えばフッ素のよう負のド−パント
を添加することにより、あるいはSiO2コア・モ−トを設
けかつ例えばGeO2でド−ピングすることによりクラッド
51(および101)の屈折率を高めることによって与
えられる。他の分布類別であるコ−ンが破線51’で示
されている。表1は分布51’ではなくて分布50につ
いて示している。
影響する主たる要因は、i)中央コア領域における高い
ピ−ク・デルタ、およびii)中央コア領域に対する小さ
い半径である。補償は半径に感応するが、システムで用
いられる分散補償ファイバの長さは製造半径の変化を補
償するように調節され得る。補償の程度と曲げ損失に対
するファイバの耐性との間には妥協が存在する。有用な
概念は「ベンド・エッジ」、または真っ直ぐなファイバ
がもはや基本モ−ドを保持しない波長である。コア・リ
ングを伴う分布類別6、8および8Aは、所定の曲げ損
失について、図5および7のリングを伴わない分布類別
よりも大きい分散補償を与えるように設計され得る。

フ波長は、公称伝送波長がカットオフ波長とベンド・エ
ッジ波長とのほぼ中間であるように調整されうる。これ
は低減衰と負方向に大きい分散との最適組合せを与え
る。分布類別5および7の場合のベンド・エッジは、ベ
ンド・エッジ波長とカットオフ波長との間の間隔が典型
的にこれらの設計の場合には800nmのオ−ダ−であるか
ら、ベンド・エッジにはそれほど感応しない。

D)のような標準的なファイバ製造方法によって作成さ
れ得る。表2におけるファイバはOVD法によって作成
された。OVD法は米国特許第4486212号、第4
125388号、第5067975号、第431483
7号、および第4715679号のような多数の特許公
報に記載されている。
記のようにダブル・オ−バ−クラッド法によって作成さ
れた。コア直径62.5μmのグレ−デッド・インデックス
多モ−ド・ファイバのためのコア・プリフォ−ムが標準
のOVD法(マンドレル上にガラス粒子を沈積させそし
てそのマンドレルを除去する)によって作成され、コン
ソリデ−トされ、そして延伸されてケ−ン(再延伸され
る)となされた。ピ−ク・コア組成は36重量%GeO2をド
−プされたシリカであった。このような沈積および再延
伸法(deposition and redraw process)が蒸気米国特
許第4486212号および第5067975号に記載
されている。この直径7mmのケ−ンはSiO 2でオ−バ−ク
ラッドされて80mmのス−ト直径となされ、そして脱水さ
れかつコンソリデ−トされてガラス母材を形成した。こ
のガラス母材が再延伸されて外径約7mmのケ−ンとなさ
れた。第1のオ−バ−クラッド・ケ−ンが再び第2のSi
O2ス−ト層でオ−バ−クラッドされて直径58mmのス−ト
となされた。このオ−バ−クラッド・ス−ト・プリフォ
−ムが脱水されそしてコンソリデ−トされて最終のガラ
ス母材となされた。この最終のガラス母材が延伸されて
ファイバ(標準のコ−ティングを有する)となされた。

μm O.D.)3.1kmおよびファイバI.D. 7873-02(107μm
O.D.)3.3kmが延伸されかつ測定された。

された母材から線引きされた6本のファイバよりなる。
第1に、コア・プリフォ−ムが、高デルタ・ステップ・
インデックス分布およびSiO2中における40重量%のGeO2
濃度をもってマンドレル上に沈積された。このコア・プ
リフォ−ムはそれの外表面上に沈積された純粋なSiO2の

され、そして再延伸されて外径7mmのコア・ケ−ンとな
された。コア・ケ−ンは85mmのス−ト直径となるように
SiO2でオ−バ−クラッドされた。この最終のプリフォ−
ムが脱水されかつコンソリデ−トされて、線引きによっ
てファイバとなされるための最終のガラス母材となされ
た。
いファイバを形成する前に、7939-011および-016のため
の母材の一部分が延伸されて、110μmから85μmまで変
化するO.D.を有する2kmの長さのファイバ(ガラス)と
なされた。この2kmの長さのファイバの異なる直径部分
における分散が測定され、110μmの直径では-17ps/nm-k
mが、そして85μmの直径では-45ps/nm-kmの値が得られ
た。その後で、母材の残部から次のようにして6本のフ
ァイバが線引きされた。7939-011(30.7km); -012(7km);
-013(15.9km); -014(12.7km); -015(6.7km); および-0
16(11.6km) これら6本のファイバの測定された特性は
均一であえり、上記の表2に示されている。
−バ−クラッド工程を含むOVD法によって製造された
母材から線引きされた3本のファイバよりなる。第1

となされた。このコア・ケ−ンは82mmのス−ト直径とな
るようにSiO2でオ−バ−クラッドされた。この最終のプ
リフォ−ムが脱水されかつコンソリデ−トされて、線引
きによってファイバ(標準のコ−ティングを有する)と
なされるための最終のガラス母材となされた。

によって形成される凹状領域でありうるが、純粋なシリ
カであってもよく、その場合には、GeO2をド−プしたシ
リカよりなるクラッドが用いられる。
ティック・テスト・プロシ−ジュアEIA/TIA-455-168に
記載されている標準分散測定技法によって測定された。
これらの測定は、分散補償ファイバの2つの端部に標準
ステップ・インデックス単一モ−ド・ファイバの短いセ
クションを添接してその分散補償ファイバに入射される
光が単一モ−ドであるようにすることによって、改善さ
れうる。
のテストが図9〜12に示されているようなシステムに
基づいて行なわれた。このテストの結果が表3に示され
ている。
に、一連の比較テストにおいて同じ送信機、受信機およ
び光ファイバ増幅器が用いられた。送信はチャンネル当
りの変調深さを有する40チャンネルNTSC AMビデオを装
填され、かつ受信機のパワ−・レベルは表3に示されて
いるようになされた。各テストにおいて補正されたキャ
リア対ノイズ(CNR)、複合2次(CSO)および複合3次
ビ−ト(CTB)歪みが55.25および325.25メガヘルツで測
定された。これら2つの周波数はそれらが40チャンネル
・スペクトルにおける周波数歪みの最悪のケ−スを表わ
すから選ばれた。
(図9参照)は結合された送信機および光ファイバ増幅
器に対するベ−スラインをキャリア対ノイズ、CSOお
よびCTB歪みレベルについて確立することを含む。受
信機で0dBを実現するように可変光減衰器が調節され
た。テスト#1はレ−ザ−・チャ−プとファイバ分散の
相互作用による劣化を比較するための基礎となる。1310
nmで最適化されたファイバ(テスト#2)および分散補
償ファイバを伴った1310nmで最適化されたファイバ(テ
スト#3)による伝送がテスト#1の結果と比較され
た。
キロメ−トルの長さの標準単一モ−ド・ファイバ(Corn
ing SMF-28, Corning Incorporated, Corning, N.Y. 14
831)が敷設され、そして受信機で0dBパワ−・レベルを
許容するように可変光減衰器が調節された。このテスト
では、レ−ザ−・チャ−プとファイバ分散との相互作用
により、ベ−スに比較して、CSOが55.2メガヘルツで
12.8dB、そして325.25メガヘルツで24.25dB劣化され
た。これらは、特に325.25メガヘルツの周波数において
比較的大きな変化であり、50dBより大きいキャリア対ノ
イズ比、-60dBより低いCSOレベル、および-65dBより
低いCTBレベルによって特徴づけられうる典型的なA
Mバックボ−ン伝送システムの最低基準をこのテストが
満足しない点までCSOレベルを劣化させた。
ロメ−トルの分散補償ファイバ(上述したファイバI.D.
7939-016)がCSO歪みを補正するためにテスト#2
のシステムに付加された。性能デ−タによって示されて
いるように、このシステムでは、ベ−スに比較して両方
のRF周波数において付加された歪み実質的な部分が補
正された。55.25メガヘルツでは、12.8dBの付加歪みの1
1.4dBが補正された。325.25メガヘルツでは、24.2dBの
付加歪みの15.5dBが補正され、8.7dBが補正されないま
まであった。
償ファイバの長さが正しくなかったか、あるいは1310nm
最適化ファイバに対して分散補償ファイバの分散傾斜が
ミスマッチであることのいずれかに基因するものと考え
られる。
イバの伝送を分散シフト(DS)ファイバによる伝送と
比較することは有意義である。表3のテスト#4(図1
2参照)では、全てのファイバが1550nmにおける性能を
最適化された分散シフトファイバ(Corning SMF-DS)の
40キロメ−トルで置換された。1550nmで動作する補償ま
たは伝送回路網は分散シフトファイバの全体のエンド・
ツ−・エンド性能よりも良好に機能しうることはありえ
ない。
ァイバ・テストに比較して、分散補償ファイバは良く機
能した。55.25メガヘルツにおいては、SDO歪みは分
散シフトファイバを通る場合の0.2dBという歪み値の範
囲内であったが、325.25メガヘルツというそれより高い
周波数では、そのSDO歪みが分散シフトファイバを通
る場合の7dBという歪み値以内に補正された。325.25メ
ガヘルツにおいてSDO歪みが完全に補正されたわけで
はないが、これは分散補償ファイバの長さが不正確であ
ること、あるいは伝送ファイバの分散傾斜と分散補償フ
ァイバのそれとの間のミスマッチに関係しているものと
考えられる。
ということは補償ファイバの長さが正しくなかったか、
あるいは1310nm最適化ファイバに対して分散補償ファイ
バの分散傾斜がミスマッチであることのいずれかに基因
するものと考えられる。
イバをそれがあたかも分散シフトファイバであるかのよ
うに動作せて、1320nm伝送リンクを通じて1550nmのAM
ビデオ信号を伝送するシステムに存在するCSO歪みを
大幅に減少させることができる。傾斜補償された分散補
償ファイバは標準の単一モ−ド・ファイバを通じた場合
のこのCSO劣化を完全に補正するために有用であろう
と考えられる。
I.D. Nos. 7-8015-01〜 -03 (合計で39.4km)よりなる
ものであり、それは1550nmにおいて-65.5ps/nm-kmの分
散を呈示したが、これは標準の単一モ−ド・ファイバの
正の分散より約4倍の大きさである。この分散補償ファ
イバのスペクトル減衰が図13に示されている。1550nm
における損失は0.48dB/kmであった。この分散補償ファ
イバの分散が図16に波長との関係でプロットされてい
る。
一モ−ド・ファイバの分散を補正するためには、39kmの
分散補償ファイバが必要とされ、これによって19dBの過
剰損失が生じた。1310nm伝送リンクおよび分散補償ファ
イバの損失は3つのOFAを用いることによって克服さ
れた。分散補償ファイバの所要長は重要であるが、この
分散補償ファイバは曲げ損失に対する耐性が非常に強い
ので、コンパクトなファイバ・リ−ルに巻取ることがで
きる。

OFAsまたは光受信機にとって許容できる最低パワ−
・レベルによってのみ制限される、補償されている標準
単一モ−ド・ファイバの中間点に配置され得る。この例
では、図14に示されているように、6.4kmの分散補償
ファイバがリンクの送信端部に配置され、その分散補償
ファイバの残りの33kmはリンクの受信端部に配置され
た。送信端部におけるOFA#1は、出力パワ−が11dB
のブ−スタ−増幅器として用いられる980nm逆方向ポン
ピング(backward-pumped)増幅器であった。標準1310n
m最適化単一モ−ド・ファイバ・リンクは長さが150kmで
あり、1550nmにおいて約2500ps/kmのエンド・ツ−・エ
ンド分散、および33dBの減衰損失を伴った。OFA#2
は980nm順方向ポンピング(forward-pumped)の25dB利
得増幅器であり、その後に1.2nm帯域光フィルタが配置
だれた。OFA#3は+13dBmの飽和出力パワ−を有し、
31dBの利得を生ずる2つの980nm逆方向ポンピング増幅
器であり、その後に3nm帯域光フィルタが配置された。
OFA#3によるノイズ寄与を軽減するために、受信端
部における分散補償ファイバが2つのセクションに分割
され、これによってOFA#3の入力におけるパワ−・
レベルを増大させるようになされた。これらのOFAは
すべて入力および出力側に光アイソレ−タを有してい
た。

にPINフォトダイオ−ドに一定の光レベルを維持する
ために用いられた。光受信機の正味感度は1E-12 BERで-
30dBmであった。

(c)に示されている。分散補償を伴わない場合のアイ
・パタ−ンから予測されうるように、このシステムは標
準ファイバの12kmだけを通じてでは動作しない。しか
し、ファイバをベ−スとした光補償器を所定の場所に設
置すれば、図15のBERグラフに示されているよう
に、標準ファイバの150kmを通じて動作する場合に、1dB
以下のの受信機パワ−・ペナルティ(power penalty)
が得られた。
散シフトファイバかのように本質的に動作させ得る単純
なファイバをベ−スとした全光分散補償技術が実施され
た。この波長許容度のある方法で非分散シフトファイバ
の分散を補償することによって、ファイバの容量をビッ
ト・レ−トおよび光源スペクトル特性とほとんど無関係
にすることができた。これが、ファイバの得られるビッ
ト・レ−ト距離積が大きく増加されるので、容量のアッ
プグレ−ドのための便利な方法を提供する。

Claims (26)
- 【請求項1】 負の導波路分散を発生するように調整さ
れた屈折率分布を有していて、全分散が1520nmから1565
nmまでの範囲内の所定の波長において-20ps/nm-km以下
であり、かつ前記所定の波長における減衰が1dB/km以下
であるようになされたシリカをベ−スとした分散補償光
導波路ファイバ。 - 【請求項2】 前記ファイバの分散対波長曲線が1290nm
と1565nmの間の波長の範囲内ゼロ交差を有していない請
求項1のファイバ。 - 【請求項3】 前記所定の波長における前記ファイバの
分散を前記所定の波長における前記ファイバの減衰で割
算したものが-40ps/nm-dBより小さいようになされてい
る請求項1のファイバ。 - 【請求項4】 前記所定の波長における前記ファイバの
分散を前記所定の波長における前記ファイバの減衰で割
算したものが-120ps/nm-dBより小さいようになされてい
る請求項3のファイバ。 - 【請求項5】 公称伝送波長がカットオフ波長とベンド
・エッジ波長との間のほぼ中間となるようにカットオフ
波長が調整されている請求項1のファイバ。 - 【請求項6】 前記屈折率分布がクラッド領域によって
包囲された中央コア領域よりなり、前記中央コア領域
は、前記クラッド領域に対比して、前記負の導波路分散
を生ずるために十分に小さい直径およびそのために十分
に大きい屈折率を有している請求項1のファイバ。 - 【請求項7】 中央に配置されてクラッドガラスによっ
て包囲されかつ所定の屈折率の中央コア領域を有するコ
アと、前記中央コア領域を包囲したクラッドガラスの層
と、前記所定の屈折率と前記クラッドガラスの屈折率と
の中間の屈折率を有するコア・リング領域を具備した請
求項1のファイバ。 - 【請求項8】 中央に配置されてクラッドガラスによっ
て包囲されたコアを具備しており、このコアは前記クラ
ッドガラスの屈折率より低い屈折率を有するコア・モ−
ト領域を有している請求項1のファイバ。 - 【請求項9】 中央に配置されてクラッドガラスによっ
て包囲されたコアを具備しており、このコアは、(a)
所定の屈折率を有する中央コア領域、(b)前記クラッ
ドガラスの屈折率より低い屈折率を有するコア・モ−
ト、および(c)前記所定の屈折率と前記クラッドガラ
スの屈折率との中間の屈折率を有するコア・リング領域
を半径が増大する方向に見てこの順序で具備している請
求項1のファイバ。 - 【請求項10】 中央に配置されてクラッドガラスによ
って包囲されたコアを具備しており、このコアは、
(a)所定の屈折率を有する中央コア領域、(b)前記
クラッドガラスの屈折率より低い屈折率を有するコア・
モ−ト、(c)前記所定の屈折率と前記クラッドガラス
の屈折率との中間の屈折率を有するコア・リング領域、
および(d)前記クラッドガラスの屈折率より低い屈折
率を有する第2のコア・モ−トを半径が増大する方向に
見てこの順序で具備している請求項1のファイバ。 - 【請求項11】 負の導波路分散を生ずるように調整さ
れた屈折率分布を有するシリカをベ−スにした分散補償
光導波路ファイバであって、全分散が1520nmから1565nm
までの範囲内の所定の波長において-20ps/nm-kmより小
さくなされ、かつ1520nmと1565nmとの間の前記波長範囲
内における分散対波長曲線の平均傾斜が0と-1.2ps/nm-k
mとの間であるようになされたシリカをベ−スとした分
散補償光導波路ファイバ。 - 【請求項12】 負の導波路分散を生ずるように調整さ
れた屈折率分布を有するシリカをベ−スにした分散補償
光導波路ファイバであって、全分散が1520nmから1565nm
までの範囲内の所定の波長において-20ps/nm-kmより小
さくなされ、かつ1520nmと1565nmとの間の前記波長範囲
内における分散対波長曲線の平均傾斜Sdcfが 0 ≧ Sdcf ≧ 2Ddcf(Stf/Dtf) という関係式によって決定され、Ddcfは前記分散補償フ
ァイバの分散、Stfは1290nmと1330nmとの間の範囲内の
波長における低分散動作のために最適化された標準の単
一モ−ド伝送ファイバの1520nmと1565nmとの間の波長範
囲における分散対波長曲線の平均傾斜、Dtfは1520nmと1
565nmとの間の範囲内の波長における前記標準の単一モ
−ド伝送ファイバの分散であり、かつDdcfは-20〜-120p
s/nm-kmの範囲内にあるようになされたシリカをベ−ス
とした分散補償光導波路ファイバ。 - 【請求項13】 Dtfが約15ps/nm-km、プラスまたはマ
イナス5ps/nm-kmであるようになされた請求項12のフ
ァイバ。 - 【請求項14】 負の導波路分散を生ずるように調整さ
れた屈折率分布を有するシリカをベ−スにした分散補償
光導波路ファイバであって、全分散が1520nmから1565nm
までの範囲内の所定の波長において-20ps/nm-kmより小
さくなされ、かつ1520nmと1565nmとの間の前記波長範囲
内における分散対波長曲線の平均傾斜Sdcfが 0 ≧ Sdcf ≧ 2Ddcf(Stf/Dtf) という関係式によって決定され、Ddcfは前記分散補償フ
ァイバの分散、Stfは1290nmと1330nmとの間の範囲内の
波長における低分散動作のために最適化された標準の単
一モ−ド伝送ファイバの1520nmと1565nmとの間の波長範
囲における分散対波長曲線の傾斜、Dtfは1520nmと1565n
mとの間の範囲内の波長における前記標準の単一モ−ド
伝送ファイバの分散、そしてDdcfは前記所定の波長にお
ける前記標準の単一モ−ド伝送ファイバの分散であるシ
リカをベ−スとした分散補償光導波路ファイバ。 - 【請求項15】 1290nmと1330nmとの間の範囲内の波長
における低分散動作のために最適化された標準単一モ−
ド伝送ファイバの少なくとも40kmと、前記標準単一モ−
ド伝送ファイバの長さの約2分の1以下の長さでもって
負の導波路分散を生ずるように調整された分散補償光導
波路ファイバとの直列の組合せよりなる分散補償された
光伝送リンクであって、このリンクの光源スペクトル幅
のnm当りの全分散が1520nmから1565nmまでの波長範囲内
の所定の波長において300ps/nm以下であるようになされ
た分散補償された光伝送リンク。 - 【請求項16】 前記分散補償ファイバおよび前記標準
ファイバに直列に接続された光ファイバ増幅器をさらに
具備しており、前記分散補償された光伝送リンクにおけ
る損失が標準単一モ−ド・ファイバの少なくとも40kmの
長さにおける減衰より小さいかあるいはそれに等しくな
された請求項15の光伝送リンク。 - 【請求項17】 前記分散補償ファイバがコアにErド−
ピングを含んでおり、かつさらに分布ファイバ増幅器を
具備している請求項15の光伝送リンク。 - 【請求項18】 1290nmと1330nmとの間の範囲内の波長
における低分散動作のために最適化されたシリカをベ−
スにした標準単一モ−ド伝送ファイバの少なくとも40km
と、負の導波路分散を生ずるように調整された屈折率分
布を有する分散補償光導波路ファイバの所定長との直列
組合せを具備しており、前記ファイバの全分散が1520nm
から1565nmまでの範囲内の所定の波長において-20ps/nm
-kmより小さく、前記所定の波長における前記ファイバ
の減衰が、1dB/kmより小さく、かつ前記分散補償ファイ
バの長さが前記標準単一モ−ド伝送ファイバの長さの約
2分の1より大きくないようになされた分散を補償され
た光伝送リンク。 - 【請求項19】 1290nmと1330nmとの間の範囲内の波長
における低分散動作のために最適化されたシリカをベ−
スにした標準単一モ−ド伝送ファイバの少なくとも40km
と、負の導波路分散を生ずるように調整された屈折率分
布を有する分散補償光導波路ファイバの所定長との直列
組合せを具備しており、1520nmから1656nmまでの波長範
囲内における分散対波長曲線の平均傾斜が0と-1.2ps/nm
2-kmとの間であり、前記分散補償ファイバの長さが前記
標準単一モ−ド伝送ファイバの長さの約2分の1より大
きくないようになされた分散を補償された光伝送リン
ク。 - 【請求項20】 1290nmと1330nmとの間の範囲内の波長
における低分散動作のために最適化された標準単一モ−
ド伝送ファイバの第1の長さと、負の導波路分散を生ず
るように調整された屈折率分布を有する分散補償光導波
路ファイバの所定長との直列組合せを具備する分散を補
償された光伝送リンクであって、負の導波路分散を生ず
るように調整された屈折率分布を有しかつ前記第1の長
さの約2分の1より小さい第2の長さを有する分散補償
光導波路ファイバとの直列組合せよりなり、1520nmから
1565nmまでの波長範囲内の所定の波長における前記伝送
リンクの複合2次歪み積が、前記所定の波長における低
分散動作のために最適化されかつ前記第1の長さと同じ
長さを有する分散シフト単一モ−ド・ファイバよりなる
伝送リンクの複合2次歪み積とほぼ同一のレベルまで低
下されるようになされた分散を補償された光伝送リン
ク。 - 【請求項21】 1290nmと1330nmとの間の範囲内の波長
における低分散動作のために最適化された標準単一モ−
ド伝送ファイバに対して使用するための分散補償器であ
って、1520nmから1565nmまでの範囲内の所定の波長にお
いて負の全色分散を有する分散補償ファイバと直列に接
続された光ファイバ増幅器を具備しており、この光ファ
イバ増幅器は前記所定の波長において増幅を与えるよう
になされている分散補償器。 - 【請求項22】 前記負の全色分散が前記ファイバの屈
折率分布に基因するものであり、その屈折率分布は負の
導波路分散を生ずるように調整されている請求項21の
分散補償器。 - 【請求項23】 前記分散補償ファイバの長さが約30km
より小さい請求項21の分散補償器。 - 【請求項24】 前記光ファイバ増幅器が増幅器ファイ
バを含んでおりかつその増幅器ファイバと前記分散補償
ファイバとの間のスプライスによって前記分散補償ファ
イバに接続されている請求項21の分散補償器。 - 【請求項25】 1520nmから1565nmまでの範囲内の所定
の波長で動作する光源と、光検知器と、光伝送ファイバ
と、分散補償ファイバと、前記光源および光検知器間に
直列に接続された光ファイバ増幅器を具備し、前記伝送
ファイバは1290nmから1330nmまでの範囲内の波長におけ
る低分散動作のために最適化されており、前記分散補償
ファイバは負の導波路分散を生ずるように調整された屈
折率分布を有し、このファイバの全分散が1520nmから16
56nmまでの範囲内の所定の波長において-20ps/nm-kmよ
り小さくなるようになされている光伝送システム。 - 【請求項26】 前記光源が前記伝送ファイバ、前記分
散補償ファイバおよび前記ファイバ増幅器の直列組合せ
に第1のWDMカプラ手段によって接続されており、前
記システムは1290nmと1330nmとの間の波長で動作する第
2の光源をさらに具備しており、この第2の光源は前記
第1のWDMカプラ手段によって前記直列組合せに接続
されており、前記検知器は第2のWDMカプラ手段によ
って前記直列組合せに接続されており、さらにまた前記
第2のカプラ手段によって前記直列組合せに接続された
第2の検知器を具備しており、この第2の検知器は前記
第2の光源によって発生された信号を受信するようにな
