Description
4つのPEEKロッドを、異なる温度(150℃、200℃、285℃、および310℃)に加熱し、鋼製ホイールの周囲で成形する。直径15.5インチの鋼製ホイールの周囲にしっかりと巻き付けたときの、34インチのロッドの2つの端部の間の距離として、加熱したPEEKロッドの成形性を測定する。表1は、この成形性を示している。
3つのPEEKロッドを310℃に加熱し、鋼製ホイールの周囲で成形する。中心温度が指定の温度に到達してから、得られた弓形部分をホイールから取り外す。冷却したPEEK弓形部分の緩和を測定して、スプリングバックを求める。表2に示されるように、PEEKのガラス転移温度より高温でホイールから取り外した場合に、PEEKロッドのスプリングバックが顕著になる。ガラス転移温度未満で取り外すと、PEEKの弓形部分は、ほぼ同じの比較的低いスプリングバックを示す。
McMaster−Carrより入手可能な14本の4インチ×1インチ×1インチの押出PEEKバーを使用して、接触ホットプレート溶着によって7本の溶着バーを作製する。1つのサンプルは、溶着前に90℃で3時間乾燥させた後で作製する。残りのサンプルは、135℃〜190℃の範囲内の温度で2時間乾燥させたロッドから作製する。
Ensingerより入手可能な押出PEEKからサンプルを作製する。ホットプレート接触溶着およびホットプレート非接触溶着を使用して溶着を行う。押出PEEKバーは、150℃で2時間半乾燥させる。
押出PEEKサンプルを溶着させる。サンプルを温度150℃で3時間乾燥させる。溶着は、420℃のプレート温度において40秒間行われる。端部は100psiの圧力で互いに押し付ける。すべての溶着部を、250℃で8時間アニールする。引張試験用にサンプルを機械加工する。表6は、平均破断時伸びおよび結果の分布を示している。
上記実施例に従って、EnsingerまたはQuadrantのいずれかより入手可能な押出PEEKを乾燥させたものからサンプルを作製する。サンプル端部を420℃で少なくとも40秒間加熱し、少なくとも40秒間互いに押し付ける。サンプルを、250℃の温度で8時間アニールする。機械的性質の試験用にサンプルを機械加工する。表7は、ASTM D638に従った手順におけるサンプルの破断時伸びを示している。
他の実施例と関連して行われる実験中、本出願人らは、早期の破壊が、溶着面付近の空隙の原因となりやすいことに気づいた。実施例5と類似の方法でサンプルを作製する。ロッドの溶融した端部を、少なくとも50psiの圧力で互いに押し付ける。ロッドが互いに押し付けられたときに、断面1平方インチ当たり少なくとも1/8インチのロッド長さに相当する量の材料が、ロッドの間から押し出される。CTスキャンによって、押し出された材料によって空隙が除去され、空隙の少ない接合が得られることが示されている。周囲圧力よりも高い圧力を溶融物内に維持する他の方法としては、真空環境中で溶着させることによって周囲圧力を下げること、または溶融した端部を互いに押し付けるときに、それらの間から溶融材料が押し出されるのを束縛することが挙げられる。
優れたシール特性を示す押出PEEKのグレードの1つは、15%のPTFEを含む。これは押出ロッドとして以下の性質を有する。
押出PEEKサンプルが溶着される。記載されるように、サンプルの1サブセットは150℃の温度で3時間乾燥させる。溶着は、420℃のプレート温度で40秒〜60秒の間の時間行う。端部を互いに押し付けられる。記載されるように、サンプルの1サブセットは250℃で8時間アニールする。引張試験用にサンプルを機械加工する。

- シールリングの形成方法であって:
熱可塑性ロッドをガラス転移温度よりも高い温度に加熱するステップであって、前記熱可塑性ロッドが第1および第2の端部を有するステップと;
前記ガラス転移温度より高い温度で、前記熱可塑性ロッドを環状構造に曲げるステップと;
前記第1および第2の端部を、前記熱可塑性ロッドの融点よりも高い温度で加熱し、前記第1および第2の端部を互いに、ロッド断面1平方インチ当たり少なくとも1/8インチに相当する材料を押し出すのに十分な力で押し付けるステップと、前記熱可塑性ロッドの前記第1および第2の端部を接合して半完成リングを形成するステップと;

- 曲げるステップの後で、前記曲げた押出ロッドを前記ガラス転移温度より低い温度に冷却するステップと、前記押出ロッドを曲げるために使用した成形装置から、前記曲げて冷却した押出ロッドを取り出すステップとをさらに含む、請求項8〜10のいずれか1項に記載の方法。
- アニールするステップが、前記半完成リングの温度を、前記ガラス転移温度より高い温度まで変化させ、前記半完成リングを前記温度において少なくとも2時間維持し、前記半完成リングを冷却するステップを含む、請求項8〜11のいずれか1項に記載の方法。
- 接合するステップの前に、前記曲げた押出ロッドを、前記第1の端部の近傍で切断するステップをさらに含む、請求項8〜12のいずれか1項に記載の方法。
- 前記押出ロッドを加熱するステップが、0.6〜0.999の範囲内の加熱指数まで加熱するステップを含む、請求項8〜13のいずれか1項に記載の方法。
- 曲げるステップが、前記押出ロッドの半径方向厚さの少なくとも5倍の半径に曲げることを含む、請求項8〜14のいずれか1項に記載の方法。
