Description
液晶表示装置の製造方法に本発明を採用した一例を以下に説明する。図1は本発明の実施の形態1に係る製造方法によって製造された液晶表示装置の平面図を表している。図1に記載の液晶表示装置1において、第一の基板3(以下TFTアレイ基板と称する)は、ガラス基板42、表示領域2、障壁6で構成されている。前記表示領域2は前記ガラス基板42上に形成されたゲート線4とソース線5で区切られた画素部およびそれを駆動するTFTアレイでマトリックス状に構成されており、前記表示領域2を周回する障壁6と、図示しない液晶を封止するためのシール7で囲まれている。また前記TFTアレイ基板3と図示しない第二の基板(以下対向基板と称する)は、シール7によって適切な間隙を持って液晶を狭持している。
上記実施の形態1においては、図9のレジスト26の形状および図3の断面構造から明らかなように、障壁6の側面は、ゲート層20、半導体層22、ソース/ドレイン層23など金属層が露出している。
図15の障壁6の断面図に示した通り、障壁6の側壁面にゲート絶縁膜21と保護膜24を残した構造にすることにより、腐食耐性を向上することができる。これは、図16のレジスト26の形状に示した通り障壁6の上部のレジストで覆われた区域を広げることにより容易に実現することができる。その他のTFT17や障壁6の製造工程や、図12に示したブラシ洗浄工程の様子は実施の形態1と同様であり、その他の製造工程の説明はこれを省略する。
図17に、一枚のガラス基板42よりなるTFTアレイ基板を複数の表示領域で区分してTFTアレイを一括形成し、パネル工程が完了した後に分断して複数の液晶表示装置を得る方法において、前記障壁6を形成して、異物を捕捉する実施の形態を示す。同図において表示領域2は一枚のガラス基板42に4面割り付けられており、予め決められた複数の縦切断線40および横切断線41でTFTアレイ基板および対向基板を分断すれば、同一仕様の液晶表示装置を複数組み立てることができる。
Claims (7)
- マトリクス状の表示領域内にTFTアレイとこのTFTアレイに駆動され画素部を構成する導電膜を有する第一の基板に、第二の基板が間隙を有して貼り合わされ、前記間隙中に液晶を狭持してなる液晶表示装置において、前記第一の基板上であって前記表示領域の外縁領域の少なくとも一部に前記TFTアレイを構成する複数の材料と同一の材料により形成された障壁を備え、
該障壁は前記表示領域の外縁領域と比べて段差を有することを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記障壁を構成する材料として、前記導電膜を含まないことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記障壁は側壁面にゲート絶縁膜または保護膜を有することを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の液晶表示装置。
- ガラス基板面から前記障壁上の配向膜面の高さは、前記表示領域の配向膜面の平均高さより高く形成されたこと特徴とする請求項1ないし3のいずれか一項に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 区分された複数のマトリクス状の表示領域を備えた前記第一の基板に、前記各表示領域を区分する境界に前記障壁を形成したことを特徴とする請求項1ないし4のいずれか一項に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第一の基板は、前記表示領域の外側に配置する液晶駆動回路を接続する端子部領域と前記表示領域との間に位置し、かつ前記TFTアレイの隣り合うゲート駆動用配線の間隙または隣り合うソース駆動用配線の間隙の少なくとも一方に前記障壁を形成したことを特徴とする請求項1ないし4のいずれか一項に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 請求項1から6のいずれか一項に記載の液晶表示装置の製造方法において、前記TFTのソースまたはドレイン電極と前記画素部とを接続するコンタクトホールを形成すると同時に、前記障壁の外形をエッチングするコンタクトホール形成工程を有することを特徴とする液晶表示装置の製造方法。
