本発明は、一般に、ＴＶスクリーンに電子番組ガイドとして表示されるテレビジョンスケジュール情報に係り、より詳細には、番組ガイドから去ることなく、番組再フォーマット機能にアクセスするためのシステム及び方法に係る。

【背景技術】
大都市エリア又はケーブルネットワークではテレビ放送局の数が増加したために、視聴者に放映される潜在的に関心のある番組の数も飛躍的に増加した。直接衛星信号を受信できるディッシュアンテナを使用すると、視聴者が見ることのできる番組の数は、更に増加している。
更に、テレビジョンは、テレビジョンとＰＣ技術の融合したものであるデジタルの将来に直面している。将来のテレビジョン受像機は、マイクロコンピュータやモデムを含み、ネットワーク、イントラネット及びインターネットを経て他のコンピュータと相互接続すると共に、プリンタのようなコンピュータ周辺装置にも接続できるものとなろう。「擬似ビデオ・オン・デマンド（ＮＶＯＤ）」や、「ビデオ・オン・デマンド」や、「ワールド・ワイド・ウェブへのアクセス」や「オーディオ・オン・デマンド」等の機能は、視聴者に過度の情報及び帯域巾を与えることになろう。

次第に明らかになってきているように、情報の過負荷は、実際上、供給される情報の有用性を低下させる。従って、入手できる情報を管理しそしてユーザに馴染み易いインテリジェントなインターフェイスを提供することが大きな課題となっている。
そこで、視聴者が種々の番組を分類しそしてどの番組を視聴し又は録画するか決定する上で助けとなるように、視聴者のテレビスクリーン上に直接映し出されるテレビジョンスケジュールシステムが開発された。このような１つのテレビジョンスケジュールシステムが、参考としてここに取り上げる共通に譲渡された米国特許第５，３５３，１２１号（ヤング氏等）に開示されている。ヤング氏の１つの実施形態では、テレビジョンスケジュールは、異なるテレビ番組に対応するセルのアレーを有する一連のメニュースクリーンを含む。視聴者は、これらのセルをスクロールして、種々の時間に種々のチャンネルにどのテレビ番組が放映されるか見ることができる。更に、視聴者は、あるセルを選択して関連番組の詳細な情報を得たり、又は追加オプションをもつ他のサブメニューを引き出したりすることができる。

本発明の別の観点によれば、ブラウジング又はグレージングポップアップウインドウに表示されるメッセージの内容がＥＰＧ発生システムにより制御される。

【発明を実施するための最良の形態】
広告映像は、ＥＰＧデータベースに記憶することもできるし、又は外部ソースから受け取ることもできる。グレージング／ブラウジングポップアップフォーマットは、メモリに記憶されたグラフィックオブジェクトと、ＲＯＭに記憶されたデータで発生される一定エリアと、データベースに記憶されるか又はリアルタイムで与えられる更新可能なデータに基づいてテキスト及びグラフィックを表示するための可変エリアとを備えている。
ポップアップは、以下に詳細に述べる広告リストデータ構造体に記憶された内容を有する広告又は他のメッセージを表示するための可変エリアを備えている。

好ましい実施形態では、本発明の電子番組ガイドは、パーソナルコンピュータや、ＰＣＴＶや、セットトップボックスに接続されたテレビジョンや、カスタムボードを含むテレビジョンにおいて実施することができる。しかし、本発明は、特定のハードウェア構成に限定されるものではなく、コンピュータ及びテレビジョンシステムの新たな組合せが開発されるにつれて、その利用性が増加するであろう。以下の説明では、上記のどれもが時々「ＴＶシステム」と称される。ＴＶシステムを表すブロック図が図２に示されている。本発明は、特定のＴＶシステムに限定されるものではないので、実施の細部については示さない。

各一次分類ごとに、図１０に示すテーマサブ分類テーブルがある。このテーブルは、一次テーマ分類に含まれた各テーマサブ分類ごとにエントリーを含む。各テーブルエントリーは、サブ分類エントリーに対応するテーマＩＤと、サブ分類の名称とを含む。

視聴者が、例えば、コメディ映画のような特定形式のショーをサーチし始めると、各チャンネルが検査され、そしてリストされた各ショーのテーマＩＤが、映画の一次分類エントリーに対応するテーマサブ分類テーブルのコメディエントリーに記憶されたテーマＩＤと比較される。テーマＩＤに一致するショーに関する情報がテーマサーチデータ構造においてユーザインターフェイスのローカルバッファに記憶される。
テーマサーチ機能は、データベースへの２つのコールを必要とする。その第１のコールは、テーマサーチデータ構造体を、そのサーチ時刻からオフセットしたショー時刻を含んで特定のチャンネルエントリーに対するテーマ分類に一致する第１のショーに初期化する。次いで、第２のコールは、特定のオフセット時間後の次の一致するショーを見出し、テーマサーチデータ構造体を更新し、そして次のショーまでのオフセットを返送する。

視聴者の位置にあるデコーダは、１６個の搬送波を受信し、そして１つの搬送波を選択するように同長期／復調器を制御する。搬送波は、サンプリングされ、デコードされ、エラー修正され、そしてデマルチプレクスされて、種々のビット流を分離する。デコーダは、圧縮された映像を圧縮解除して、実質上いかなるサイズの映像も再構成する映像デコーダチップを備えている。

  1. 現に放送されているテレビジョン信号を回復するための受信機と、
    前記回復したテレビジョン信号を表示するためのディスプレイモニタと、

    テレビジョンスケジュール情報と、情報メッセージと、前記テレビジョンスケジュール情報から特定テレビジョン番組に関係する情報メッセージへのリンクとを含む第１のデータベースと、
    広告メッセージと、テレビジョンスケジュール情報に関係する広告メッセージをリンク付けするための各ＩＤとを含む第２のデータベースと、
    前記広告メッセージ用の各ＩＤを用いて、前記表示されたテレビジョン画像に関連する広告メッセージを前記第２のデータベースから選択する手段と、
    規定の広告サイクルに基づき所定時間の後に異なる広告メッセージを表示したり、又は表示されているテレビ番組の状況に基づいて異なる広告メッセージを表示したりする手段と、
    前記表示されたテレビジョン画像に重畳されたポップアップウィンドウを表示する手段とを有し、前記ポップアップウィンドウは、前記選択された広告メッセージと、前記第１のデータベースに格納された情報メッセージ用の各リンクを用いて選択される前記表示されたテレビジョン画像に関連する情報メッセージとを含み、前記テレビジョン画像は前記情報メッセージ及び前記広告メッセージの両方と同時に表示され、且つ前記ポップアップウィンドウの少なくとも広告メッセージ部分を透明にしてその下のテレビジョン画像を透かして見えるようにすることができることを特徴とするテレビジョンシステム。
  2. 前記情報メッセージは、前記回復したテレビジョン信号からのテレビジョン画像の内容に関連していることを特徴とする請求項１に記載のテレビジョンシステム。
  3. 前記情報メッセージは、前記回復したテレビジョン信号のチャンネルのその後の番組に関連していることを特徴とする請求項１に記載のテレビジョンシステム。
  4. 前記情報メッセージは、前記回復したテレビジョン信号のチャンネルの現在の番組に関連していることを特徴とする請求項１に記載のテレビジョンシステム。
  5. 前記表示されたテレビジョン画像に重畳されたＥＰＧ及び広告メッセージの合成を表示する手段をさらに備えたことを特徴とする請求項１に記載のテレビジョンシステム。
  6. 前記表示されたテレビジョン画像に重畳されたＥＰＧを表示する手段をさらに備えたことを特徴とする請求項５に記載のテレビジョンシステム。
  7. 少なくとも１つの記憶された背景カラー値を含むＥＰＧデータを記憶する手段をさらに備えたことを特徴とする請求項５に記載のテレビジョンシステム。
  8. 前記記憶された背景カラー値を使用して前記ＥＰＧのみを表示する手段をさらに備えたことを特徴とする請求項７に記載のテレビジョンシステム。
  9. 前記記憶された背景カラー値に透明値を置き換えて前記合成を表示する手段をさらに備えたことを特徴とする請求項７に記載のテレビジョンシステム。
