Abstract
【解決手段】陽極3と陰極5との間に発光層を有する有機層4を狭持してなる有機EL素子1において、発光層は、陽極3側から順に赤色発光層11、緑色発光層12、青色発光層13を積層してなる。赤色発光層11は、正孔輸送性発光材料を含む正孔輸送性を有している。また、緑色発光層が両電荷輸送性を有している。さらに、青色発光層は電子輸送性を有し、陽極3側から順に両電荷輸送性青色発光層と電子輸送性青色発光層と積層してなるものでも良い。

Description
先ず、基板2は、ガラス、シリコン、プラスチック基板、さらにはTFT(thin film transistor)が形成されたTFT基板などからなり、特に図2に示すボトムエミッション型の有機EL素子の場合には、この基板2は光透過性を有する材料で構成されることとする。また、有機EL素子1,1’を他の表示素子と組み合わせて用いる場合には、他の表示素子と基板を共用することもできる。
そして、この基板2上に設けられた陽極3は、仕事関数の大きな導電性材料で構成されていることとする。仕事関数の大きな導電性材料としては、たとえば、ニッケル、銀、金、白金、パラジウム、セレン、ロジウム、ルテニウム、イリジウム、レニウム、タングステン、モリブデン、クロム、タンタル、ニオブやこれらの合金、あるいは酸化錫(SnO2)、酸化インジウム錫(ITO:Indium tin oxide)、酸化亜鉛、酸化チタン等がある。
一方、この陽極3と電源8を介して接続されている陰極5は、仕事関数が小さな導電性材料を用いて構成されている。このような導電性材料としては、例えば、Li、Mg、Ca等の活性な金属とAg、Al、In等の金属との合金、或いはこれらを積層した構造を使用できる。また、有機層4との間に例えば、Li、Mg、Ca等の活性な金属とフッ素、臭素等のハロゲンや酸素等との化合物層を薄く挿入した構造としても良い。
そして、これらの陽極3と陰極5との間に狭持される有機層4は、陽極3側から順に、正孔輸送層10、赤色発光層11、緑色発光層12、青色発光層13、電子輸送層14を積層してなる。以下、これらの各層10−14の構成を、陽極3側から順次説明する。
先ず、陽極3上に設けられる正孔輸送層10は、正孔を輸送するように設計された層である。この正孔輸送層10は、正孔輸送性能を向上させるために、複数種の正孔輸送材料を積層した構成であっても良い。
次に、この正孔輸送素10上に設けられた赤色発光層11は、正孔輸送層10から注入した正孔の一部がこの赤色発光層11内において再結合して赤色の発光を得られ、残りの発光に寄与しない正孔が緑色発光層12に輸送され、緑色および青色発光に寄与することが好ましい。
そして、この赤色発光層11上に設けられた緑色発光層12は、正孔と電子の両方の電荷輸送性を有していることが好ましく、こうすることによって赤色発光層11から注入された正孔の一部を緑色発光層12内で発光に寄与させ、残りを青色発光層13に輸送すると共に、青色発光層13側から注入された電子の一部を緑色発光層12内で発光に寄与させ、残りを赤色発光層11に輸送する。これにより、赤、緑、青のそれぞれの発光層11,12,13から発光が得られるようになる。
次いで、緑色発光層12上に設けられる青色発光層13は、電子輸送性を有していることとする。これにより、電子輸送層14から青色発光層13に注入された電子の一部は青色発光層13内で青色発光に寄与し、残りは緑色発光層12に輸送されることで緑色及び赤色発光に寄与する。
また、青色発光層13と陰極5との間に設けられた電子輸送層14は、電子を輸送するように設計された層である。この電子輸送層14は、電子輸送性能を向上させるために、複数種の電子輸送材料を積層した構成であっても良い。

- 陽極と陰極との間に発光層を有する有機層を狭持してなる有機EL素子において、
前記発光層は、前記陽極側から順に赤色発光層、緑色発光層、青色発光層を積層してなる
ことを特徴とする有機EL素子。 - 請求項1記載の有機EL素子において、
前記赤色発光層が正孔輸送性を有する
ことを特徴とする有機EL素子。 - 請求項2記載の有機EL素子において、
前記赤色発光層が正孔輸送性発光材料を含む
ことを特徴とする、有機EL素子。 - 請求項1記載の有機EL素子において、
前記緑色発光層が両電荷輸送性を有する
ことを特徴とする有機EL素子。 - 請求項1記載の有機EL素子において、
前記青色発光層が電子輸送性を有する
ことを特徴とする有機EL素子。 - 請求項1記載の有機EL素子において、
前記青色発光層が、前記陽極側から順に両電荷輸送性青色発光層と電子輸送性青色発光層と積層してなる
ことを特徴とする有機EL素子。 - 請求項1記載の有機EL素子において、
前記赤色発光層が正孔輸送性を有し、前記緑色発光層が両電荷輸送性を有し、前記青色発光層が電子輸送性を有する
ことを特徴とする有機EL素子。 - 白色発光する有機EL素子の光取り出し面側にカラーフィルタを設けてなる表示装置において、
前記有機EL素子は、陽極と陰極との間に発光層を有する有機層を狭持してなり、
前記発光層が、前記陽極側から順に赤色発光層、緑色発光層、青色発光層を積層してなる
ことを特徴とする表示装置。
