Abstract
825,020. Mechanical couplings for cable or wire armouring or covering. LIGHT & POWER ACCESSORIES CO. Ltd., and LOTT, F. J. Aug. 28, 1957 [May 1, 1957], No. 13863/57. Class 38 (1). A clamping gland for armoured electric cables comprises a hollow cylindrical body, means to provide a fluid-tight seal or seals within the gland, the body being adapted at one end for connection to an enclosure and screwthreaded at the other end to receive an armour clamping cap which causes the cable armouring to be gripped between a tapered clamping ring and a tapered portion of an internal sleeve. The body 1 (Fig. 1), has a threaded nipple 2 to screw into a mounting, a flange 3 with blind holes 4 to receive a tool for rotating the body, and a threaded portion 8 to receive the armour clamping cap 22. The flange 3 may alternatively be hexagonal. The body 1 also has a hole 5 which is enlarged at 6 and 7. The sleeve 9 fits into the enlarged hole 6 and has a neoprene ring 12 which engages the enlarged hole 7. The ring 12 is disposed in a groove 11 flanked by small flanges 10. A hole 13 in the sleeve 9 has a tapered portion 16 and a screw-threaded portion 15. Plug 17 screws into the sleeve 9 and the pressure exerted via a washer 19 compresses a resilient annulus 18 on to the cable. The sleeve 9 also has a tapered portion 28 which matches an internal taper 27 on a ring 26. The armouring of the cable is splayed out and gripped between the tapering surfaces, the pressure being applied by the cap 22. The sleeve 9 and the plug 17 have flats to facilitate their being screwed together. In a modification the sleeve 9 may incorporate a chamber which may be filled with a compound such as pitch to eliminate the internal seal. Where the cable has a covering of resilient material over the armouring the seal may be incorporated in the end of the armour clamping cap, which is modified by the provision of a further screwthread to which a closure cap 35 (Fig. 7), is fitted. The annular resilient ring 34 is compressed on to the cable by the ring 33. In a further modification an annular resilient ring is compressed on to the cable by the closure cap with the aid of a tapering entry hole in the armour clamping cap.
