908,838. Mechanical couplings for cable covering; preventing access of moisture. BRITISH ENGINES Ltd. July 11, 1960 [July 18, 1959], No. 24736/59. Class 38 (1). A cable gland for panel mounting has a body 10 with a bore 14 in which a deformable insert 11, of insulating material, e.g. P.V.C., rubber, bonded to shoulder 15, is forced into contact with the outside of the cable to provide a moisture-proof seal by a wedge member 12 screwed down by cap nut 13. Cable armouring is clamped against taper 24 by nut 26. The gland can seal on the outer sheathing of the cable, Fig. 2 (not shown). In a two-part gland body 10b, having the wedge member retained in it screws on to body 10a which contains the sealing insert, Fig. 3 (not shown). Seals on both outer sheath and cable or double sealing on cables may be done by interchanging the body members. Earth continuity may be maintained by using a metallic deformable insert, e.g. lead. According to the Provisional Specification the gland may be of the form described in Specification 852,132.
