Abstract

894,270. Mechanical couplings for cable armouring. PLANT ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. April 14, 1958 [April 13, 1957], No. 12130/57. Class 38 (1). A cable gland 1 comprises a tapped cup 8 enclosing a tapered male sleeve 9 and a parttapered female sleeve 10 between which the cable armouring 17 is gripped when the cap is screwed on to member 22, sealing being effected by a rubber or similar washer 11 which, when compressed, grips the cable outer sheath 18. Washer 11 may alternatively be fitted in contact with the wide end of male sleeve 9. The chamber in union member 19 may be filled with self-sealing compound, a vent-hole 21 being provided to allow excess compound to escape when member 9 is screwed on to coupling member 1. If the wall 6 of the switch, junction-box &c. in which the gland is fitted is of insulating material an earthing washer with an integral radially projecting pieced tongue to which an earthing wire can be secured may be fitted between shoulder 3 and casing 6. Union member 19 may be omitted (Fig. 1, not shown). The gland may be used for various sizes of cable by providing a range of sizes of sleeves 9 and 10.
