Abstract
1524684 Terminating cables or conduits BICCLtd 22 Dec 1975 [20 Dec 1974 23 Dec 1974 16 April 1975 14 Nov 1975] 44415/77 44416/77 44417/77 and 44418/77 Divided out of 1524683 Heading H2E In a method of terminating an electric cable or conduit, the cable or conduit end is prepared so that the individual conductors 5 project from an end of a surrounding protective cable layer, the cable or conduit being secured in a first member having an enlarged section in one face around a passage through which the cable or Conduit passes before applying a hardenable insulating compound, in a pasty or viscous condition, in the recess so as to fill the enlarged section and stand proud therefrom. A second member which has an enlarged section facing the enlarged section of the first member cooperates with the first member to enclose the insulating, compound and pressure is generated therein by drawing the first and second members together. The termination may be secured by mechanically engaging at least one of the members. As described, a gland may be empoloyed wherein, Fig. 1, a first gland member 9 slides over a second gland member 14 each member 9, 14 having an enlarged section which together define a space which is filled with the insulating compound, a gland barrel 6 and gland body 11 being threadingly engaged so as to draw the members 9, 14 together. The armour wires of the cable are gripped between a ring 8 and an armour cone 10. In alternative embodiments, the first gland member 9 may be inside the second member 14 (Fig. 10 and Figs. 4, 5 and 6, not shown), and screwed thereto (Fig. 4, not shown). Further a flameproof sealing ring, which may have square shoulders may be provided between the second member 14 and the gland body 11 (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown), or the ring may be replaced by a cold setting resinous compound. When the second member 14 is outside member 9, it may function as the body 11 and be provided with a screw thread to engage that of the barrel 6 (Fig. 3, not shown). In a further embodiment, Fig. 7, the members 9, 14 are drawn together by bolts 27 via gland members 25, 26, the cable armour being gripped between the first member 9 and the gland member 25. In yet a further embodiment, Fig. 9, not shown, the fitting is mounted on a cable end by means of a seal comprising an elastomeric ring (30) of polychloroprene and a lead inset (31), a skid washer (32) co-operating with first member 9 to compress the seal. Fig. 10 shows a modification where a gland similar to earlier embodiments is secured to the cable end by a standard (non-flameproof) gland 33, further gland members 34, 35 performing the functions of the gland barrel 6 and body 11. In a final embodiment (Fig. 11, not shown), the first member 9 is secured to the cable end by first screwing it into a compressor (38) so as to compress an elastomeric ring (43), a skid washer (39) being interposed between the ring (43) and the compressor (38). A spigot (41) is provided with a tapered thread rather than the form of spigot 20 shown in Fig. 1.
