Abstract

851,508. Mechanical couplings for cable or wire armouring or covering. HAWKE, W. March 31, 1959 [March 28, 1958], No. 9944/58. Class 38(1) A clamping gland for a double-wire-armoured cable comprises a body A having a cavity a<SP>4</SP> counterbored at a<SP>5</SP> to receive the end of an inner sleeve D. An outer sleeve F having an internal taper is accommodated in a threaded bore e4 of a cover member E, and a shoulder g <SP>1</SP> of an intermediate sleeve G is adapted to abut the thinner end of the sleeve F. Two portions c<SP>1</SP>, c<SP>2</SP> of the armoured wire layers are clamped by the sleeves when the cover member E is' screwed home on the body A. In a modification, Fig. 3, the counterbore in the body A is deepened and tapered at a <SP>5</SP> to receive a washer H which becomes clamped on the internal sheath b <SP>1</SP> of the cable when the gland is tightened. Additionally, the gland is made weatherproof by a sealing washer L which may be of synthetic rubber or plastic. The body A may have a spigot portion and flange in place of a threaded portion a2. The parts of the gland may be of metal or plastic.
