Abstract
668,753. Cable joints. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd., and GRAY, D. J. Dec. 13, 1950 [Dec. 14, 1949], No. 32050/49. Class 38 (i). A fluid-tight gland for a cablejoint comprises a metal sleeve 13 secured on the metal cable-sheath 12 by a plumbed joint 17 and provided with a tapered surface 15 which is presented in a bore in the joint enclosure 1, a rubber-like packing ring 18 being clamped between the surface 15 and the bore by a compressing ring 20. The sleeve with a flange 14 thereon embedded in the joint 17 is received in a tube 10 providing the enclosure bore and internally threaded at 11 to work with the ring 20 which is finally locked by nuts 22, 23 threaded at 16 on the sleeve. To prevent the cable - sheath being forced into the enclosure when the ring 20 is tightened, a bridge-piece 24, with spacers 25 abutting the enclosure 1, is secured on the sleeve thread 16 between the nuts 22, 23, Fig. 2. After the ring has been tightened, the bridge-piece is removed and the lock-nuts screwed against the ring. In one modification, Fig. (not shown), for use where the enclosure 1 is divided centrally into two halves, the tapered surface 15 terminates in a flange 28 which abuts the inner end of the tube 10 and when used with armoured cable, Fig. 4, the ends of the armouring tape 33 are wire-bound at 34 and a plumbed joint 17 secures the sheath, the sleeve, and the tape together. The compressing ring 29 is threaded internally and externally at 30, 31, and a single lock-nut 32 is employed. A plumbed joint 35 on the outer end of the sleeve secures it to the armouring. Preferably, a metal washer 19 protects the packing washer 18 and when the enclosure is open at both ends, Fig. 1, the cable end opposite the gland is provided with a sleeve 6 secured to the sheath at 8 and screwed into a plate 5. The plate is anchored at 9 and is bolted to a flange 3 soldered to the enclosure 1.
