Abstract

731,316. Stuffing-boxes. VIENNE, R. DE, and VIENNE, J. DE. March 9, 1953, No. 6467/53. Class 122 (5). [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXXVI] An elongated element, such as an electric cable 10 or a pipe, is secured where it passes through an aperture in a partition by a gland comprising a socket member 1 which is internally threaded to take a ferrule 5, has an internal tapered curved surface 3 terminating at its smaller end in a radial shoulder 4 having a bore through which the cable passes, and houses a ring 9 of elastic material having, in its free state, an axial length greater than that of the curved surface 3 and an internal diameter greater than the cable diameter, and which, when the ferrule 5 is screwed into the socket, is forced towards the shoulder 4 and thereby compressed into contact with the cable 10. A metal washer 8 is interposed between the ring 9 and the ferrule 5. The tapered surface 3 may be either concave or convex.
