Abstract
870,067. Mechanical coupling for cable sheathing. LIGHT & POWER ACCESSORIES CO. Ltd., and LOTT, F. J. Nov. 26, 1959 [Jan. 27, 1959], No. 2885/59. Class 38 (1). A flameproof gland for an armoured electric cable comprises a body 1 into which slides a sleeve 2A with a tapered end 7. A split tapered conducting collar 7, e.g. of lead, is forced into a tapered bore in a pressure ring 5C by a cap nut 5A screwed into the sleeve 2A. The collar 7 is thus compressed on to lead sheathing 6A on a cable 4D to form an earth contact and the ring 5C moves longitudinally to compress a neoprene seating ring 6 on to the sheathing 6A. The ends 10 of the wire armouring of the cable are clamped between the tapered end 4 of the sleeve and a tapered ring 9B by means of a cap 9 screwed on to the body 1. A neoprene washer 11B in the cap 9 is compressed by a cap nut 11A and a metal washer 11C to grip the outer sheathing of the cable. A neoprene ring 3A in an annular groove 3 provides a fluid-tight seal between the sleeve 2A and the body 1. The body 1 has a reduced diameter screw-threaded part 1A for screwing into a box and blind holes 1C to receive a turning tool. To allow for different diameters of sheathing soft metal tape may be wound round the sheathing or round the collar.
