Abstract

927,057. Waveguides. CANNON ELECTRIC CO. Sept. 4, 1959 [April 3, 1959], No. 30236/59. Class 40 (8). [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXXVI] A gripping device for an elongated member, such as the sheath 26 of a cable 14 where it enters a coupling 10, comprises a pair of annular rings 82, 90 with parallel conical faces 114, 156 located in a socket 38 in the tubular coupling body 28 and adapted, on tightening a collar 102 screw-threaded on the body 28, to compress between them a series of nested conical washers 84, 86, 88 so that the inner edges of the washers are forced into the cable sheath and the outer edges engage the inner surface of socket 38, the outer edges of washers 86, 88 and ring 90 being formed with flanges 138, 152 and 160 respectively which overlap the adjacent washer to limit the amount of flattening of the washers. A nut 112 screws into the outer end of collar 102 to compress a resilient sleeve 108 on to the cable sheath. A similar gripping device is provided at the opposite end of body 28 for a second cable 12; the inner conductors 16, 22 of the cables are received in sockets 54, 56 located in the body 28 by insulating inserts 42, 44 and connected by a collar 52. The cable sheaths may consist of insulating or conducting material and in the former case, the conical washers may be formed of non-metallic material. Fig. 8 shows the gripping device adapted for securing a radiofrequency transmission tube 180 in a retaining device 182. As before, a collar 212 compresses nested conical washers 196, 198, 200 between rings 190, 204. The washers in this case do not have flanges at their outer edges.
