In a shears in which longitudinally moving stock passing through a guide tube 61 is severed when the guide tube 61 is swung to deflect the stock between a pair of blade discs 31 rotating on parallel axes, the guide tube 61 is cut away at its end adjacent the blade discs 31 to the form of an open channel, the open channel being closed by a hood 76 except during severing of the stock. Rod passes from a mill stand 11 through guides 12 and 56 to the flared inlet 58 of the guide-tube 61 supported at its inlet end on rollers engaging fixed inclined slots 64. The outlet end of the guide tube 61 is supported on rollers 71 engaging fixed inclined slots 73 and is connected to a piston in a cylinder 85 communicating with a compressed air bottle 91. When. the guide tube 61 is moved by the piston during severing, the hood 76 which is pivotally mounted on the guide tube 61 is temporarily opened by the action of rollers 81 engaging slots 83. The rod which prior to severing is fed into a guide pipe 14 now engages the curved upper face of a rectangular guide 35 and passes into a guide pipe 13. In a four-strand mill plant, Fig. 3, the rod issuing from each pass traverses the guide 12, a shear 10, an outlet guide-pipe 13 or 14, water-boxes 15, 16 and 17, and a guide 19 or 21 leading to a reeling device 22 or 23.
