Abstract

1,008,308. Shearing. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. March 3, 1964 [March 18, 1963], No. 8908/64. Heading B3W. A shear assembly for a moving web including a shear fixedly mounted along a path of movement, feed means for drawing the web through said sheer and web slack providing means disposed intermediate said shear and said web feed means and adapted automatically to supply from the length of slack to said web feed means whilst that portion of the web to be cut by the shear remains stationary during the operation of the shear. The assembly comprises a fixed shear blade 17, Fig. 1, a movable shear blade 18, a driven feed roll 22 and a pressure roll 23, and a loop-forming device comprising a pair of guide rolls 25 and 26 and a third guide roll 27 which can be moved vertically between the rolls 25 and 26. There are secondary feed rolls 30 and 31 and pivoted drags 32 which prevent retrograde movement of the web 20. The movable blade 18 is reciprocated by eccentrics 86 on a shaft 84, the eccentrics being connected to the blade by rods 88 of adjustable length and the shaft being driven through a onerevolution clutch. The fixed blade is carried by a frame 74 and has means by which it is adjustably mounted in brackets 75. The vertical movement of the third guide roller 27 is derived from a fluid motor 103 pivotally attached to the frame of the shear. The secondary feed rolls 31 are rotatably mounted on a shaft which is supported in eccentric bushes. The bushes can be rotated by a gear 61 which is rotated by a gear 62, a crank arm 65 and a fluid motor 68 to bring the rollers 30 and 31 into and out of co-operative engagement with the web 20. Operatic .-The one-revolution clutch and the fluid motor 103 are operated by common control means, so that as the blade 18 begins to move upwards the guide roll 27 moves downwards from the position shown in Fig. 1 at such a rate that the portion of the web 20 between the shear blades remains stationary at the time it is severed. The guide roll 27 continues to move down to a position below the path of the web, the trailing end of which is drawn through the feed rolls 22 and 23. The fluid motor 68 is then actuated to raise the secondary roll 31 and feed the newly-formed leading end of the web through the shear to the feed rolls 22 and 23.
