Abstract

1,139,065. Unpackaging coiled strip. UNITED ENG. & FOUNDRY CO. 24 March, 1966 [26 March, 1965], No. 13055/65. Heading B8C. [Also in Division B3] An apparatus for removing a retaining band B from a coil of material C comprises a pair of motor-driven support rollers 10, 11 which can be raised by a fluid cylinder 11c. Above the coil is a hold-down roller 12 which is belt-driven by a motor 16. The motor 16 is mounted on a sub-frame 17 which is supported by parallel links 18, 21 which are pivotally attached to a frame 19 which is slidable in a direction parallel to the axis of the coil C. The sub-frame 17 is raised and lowered by a fluid cylinder 32. The band B is severed by a cutter 25 mounted in a holder 24 which is reciprocable in a guide 23. The holder 24 is moved to bring the cutter close to the band B by a fluid cylinder 27 which is mounted on the sub-frame 17. The cutter 25 is actuated to sever the band B by the impact of a hammerhead 28 carried by the piston-rod of a fluid cylinder 29. The cut band B passes into a shoot 34 and is fed by a pair of rubbercovered pinch rolls 35, 36 to a scrap-cutting shear 42, the cut pieces of band falling into a container 43. The pinch rolls 35, 36 are driven by an air-motor which stalls if the speed of the rolls exceeds the speed at which the band is advanced by the hold-down roller 12. The shoot 34 is vertically adjustable by means of a fluid cylinder 41. Prior to cutting the band B the coil of strip is positioned so that the leading end of the strip is between the roller 12 and a guide 44 along which the strip passes to a processing machine 45.
