A container closure cap A with recessed peripheral portion 2 conical skirt 4 and sealing disc B has slits 6 in the skirt, the angle a subtended at the centre by each slit being equal to at least 45 degrees, preferably 50-70 degrees and offset portions 10 formed in making the slits engage the container mouth or neck. Apparatus for applying the closure has a head C comprising a block 12 with a cylindrical skirt portion 15 and a conical portion 14 and slidable within a further cylindrical portion 17 is a plunger 19 urged downwardly by a relatively weak spring 20 but the plunger is held in its lower operative position by spring urged balls 21 movable in radial holes 24 in block 12 and which engage an annular recess 22 in the plunger, the springs, 23 being so adjusted that the force required to displace the balls and urge the plunger 19 upwardly is at least equal to the force required to force a cap on to a container. To operate the apparatus a cap A is placed on the upper edge of the container and as the head C is lowered the flared skirt 14 forms a centering device and the cylindrical part 15 prevents distortion of the cap as portions 10 are forced outwardly when the cap is pressed on the container by the plunger 19. In a modification, Fig. 13, block 12 is replaced by members 44, 45 fixed to a plate 38 carried in a ring 32 and engaged by a thrust bearing comprising balls 42 in a cage 43. A piston 53 urged downwardly by a spring 60 and having a groove 70 engaged by a spring urged plunger 67 has attached to it a ring 54 housing a member 61 urged downwardly by springs 63 through a thrust bearing having balls 65 in a cage 66.
