Abstract

1,043,882. Container closures. OWENSILLINOIS Inc. April 4, 1963 [April 4, 1962], No. 13323/63. Heading B8T. Apparatus for positioning sealing rings in closure cap shells following random placing of sealing rings in the shells, comprises an annular horizontal turret plate 24 (Fig. 2, not shown), rotatable about a vertical axis, and vertically reciprocable tamping heads 45 disposed above the plate and movable therewith. Cap shells are fed on to the turret plate and are retained thereon, open side uppermost, in pockets 30 (Fig. 1, not shown), by magnets and an arcuate guide rail. Each tamping head is attached to a tamping unit 34a which comprises a sleeve 38 slidable in a cylinder 36, a cam roller 39 which engages a cam groove (Fig. 2, not shown), to effect vertical movement of the head, and a further roller 38a which runs in guideway 36a to prevent rotation of the sleeve about its axis. The tamping head is attached to a spring-urged piston-like member 40 within the sleeve 38. Each head includes an inverted cup-shaped holder 46 which accommodates a rubber inserter 48, which has legs 54 with fingers 55 or with V-shaped grooves. After accurately positioning the rings in the shells, the shells are removed from the turret plate by a star-wheel and are fed to a bonding unit.
