Abstract

891,341. Container closures; applying closures. METAL BOX CO. Ltd. Nov. 17, 1959 [Jan. 28, 1959], No. 3131/59. Classes 125(2) and 125(3). A vacuum cap for a can 3 is formed of non- resilient flexible sheet metal, e.g. aluminium, between 0À006 and 0À014 inches thick, and has a crown 1 from which extends the shorter limb 2 of a J-section annular channel within which is a sealing medium 11, the longer limb 5 of the channel forming a skirt with an uninterrupted portion engaging under a curl 7 on the upper end of the can, the edge of the skirt having an extension curl with openings therein spaced round its periphery. The sealing medium 11 is preferably a sealing compound, but may be in the form of a rubber ring. The divergent angle of the limb 5 enables the caps to be nested for storage purposes. The shorter limb 2 may be at right angles to the crown 1. Closing. Apparatus for closing the can comprises a sealing head having a ring 13 secured to a body 15 connected through screw-threads 16 to a machine so that it may be reciprocated relative to the can 3. A member 17 urged downwards by a spring 18 is movable relative to the ring 13. A steam jacket 22 having an inlet 23 is attached to the body 15. In operation, the sealing compound 11 is softened by contact with the can rim, when the can contents are hot. The head is moved down to pick up the can lid, Fig. 9 (not shown), and again lifted together with the lid, Fig. 10 (not shown). Steam is then injected into the head space of the can just prior to the descent of the head to close the can. A shoulder 20 on the member 17 abuts the base of the J-section channel, while the axial movement of the ring continues, the vertical face 24 of the ring pressing the curl 8 inwards to the position shown in Fig. 15. As the steam in the head space of the can cools it forms a vacuum.
