Abstract

117,924. Haddan, A. J. H., (Anchor Cap & Closure Corporation). July 12, 1917. Capsule closures.-Relates to sealing-closures for glass containers &c. and of the kind described in Specifications 14867/05 and 5926/15, in which a cap comprising an annular beading of folded or bent metal encloses a gasket which is displaced laterally under compression against the side wall of the container. The annular ring 18, Fig. 3, now comprises a portion of the metal of the cap folded upon itself with the sides thereof substantially parallel and practically free of gasket material, the skirt portion 17 serving as a metal backing or support for the greater portion of the gasket 9. Figs. 2 and 3 show the cap and gasket before and after the sealing operation, respectively. The chuck or upper die 14 may have a vertical wall 15 and an inclined face 16, which is substantially parallel to the inclined surface 11 of the anvil die 10. By bending up a portion of the ring 18 opposite an opening or recess 20, Fig. 5, in the lower edge of the skirt 17, the gasket can be forced downwardly by means of the thumb &c. into a loop 21, and then be removed.
