Description

R. FLANIGAN. (LOSURE FOR CANS, BOTTLES, JARS, 65c.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 13, I920. 1,360,9 1 1 Patented Nov. 30, 1920,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLOSURE FOR CANS, BOTTLES, JARS, &O.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 30, 1920.
Application filed April 13, 1920. Serial No. 373,622.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT FLANIGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closures for Cans, Bottles, Jars, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in closures for cans, bottles, jars, etc., and has for its object to provide a simple, cheap and eflicient device for hermetically sealing cans, bottles, jars and other packing vessels.
The invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of the parts and combination of parts hereinafter more fully set forth in'the following specification and pointed out in detail in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a can having my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig.1.
Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation of the cap for closing the can.
Fig. 41.- is a vertical section of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the cap after having the convexed bottom depressed to expand the lower edge of the cap.
Fig- 6 is a vertical section of a bottle neck showing my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 7 is a vertical section of a can showing the cap applied thereto and a dispensing tube adapted to fit friction tight in said cap.
Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the dispensing tube.
Fig. 9 is a modification of the cap having diametrical corrugations in the bottom thereof.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and in which like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views thereof, 1 represents a can having an opening 2 in the top thereof provided with a flange 3..
The cap 4. is provided with a flange 5 on the upper edge and a convexed bottom 6.
The said cap %I is placed in the opening 2 with its flange 5 resting on the upper surface of the can 1. The convexed bottom 6 is then forced down with a suitable tool (not shown) causing the said bottom to expand in diameter forcing the cap securely under the flange 3 of the can and hermetically seal the same. The flange 5 at the top of the cap 4 may be of any suitable d ameter. The flange 3 is adapted to yield with the cap 4.- when the bottom 6 is expanded so that the impinging surfaces of said cap and' flange will form a tight joint.
In Fig. 6 I have shown the cap applied to a bottle; the bottom 7 of the cap when depressed is expanded into the seat 8 in the neck of the bottle and hermetically seals the same. 1
In Figs. 7 and 8 I have shown a dispensing tube 9, provided with a cup-shaped flange 10 which latter is adapted to set into the cap 4 and is held therein by friction. The said tube 9 is used for dispensing the contents of said can after a hole is punched in the bottom of the cap 4.
In Fig. 9 I have shown a modification of the cap which is provided with a number of diametrical beads 11 which extend from near the center to near the periphery of said bottom and strengthen the same and also serves to hold the said bottom in a horizontal plane when forced down and expanded under the can flange.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
l. The combination with a can having an opening in the top thereof provided with a downwardly-projecting flange, of a cap adapted to be inserted in said opening and having a flanged upper edge and a convexed bottom provided with beads extending from near the center to near the periph-.
ery thereof and adapted to be expanded to cooperate with and re-form the downwardlyprojecting flange of the can to hermetically seal the latter.
2. The combination with the can having a flanged opening in the top thereof of a cap to be inserted in said opening and having a flanged upper edge and a convexcd bottom provided with beads extending from near the center to near the periphery thereof and adapted to be expanded in said opening, and cooperating with and reforming the flange of the can opening to hermetically seal the latter. 1
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ROBERT FLANIGAN.
