Abstract

1410639 Closure caps ALUMINUM CO OF AMERICA 11 Dec 1972 [27 Dec 1971] 56966/72 Heading B8T A closure 10 of sheet aluminium or other deformable material has a knurled band 24 and peripheral skirt 26 with a rib 27 to retain a sealing composite liner 28. Capping machine rollers 52 deform the skirt 26 against screw thread retaining means 16 on a container mouth, while top pressure is maintained with a pressure block 50. A sealing land 40 has sealing material 44 on the inner surface to form a seal against the bead 18 by the action of a collar 54 from a second capping machine. The bottom portion of band 20 is tucked under bead 18 with a forming tool 56 while the collar 54 maintains downward pressure. When the container is opened bridges 46 break leaving band 20 on the container. Closure 70 may be re-secured by screwing it on, but the seal at R1 will no longer be under compression by band 20.
