Abstract

1278970 Making bottle caps CONTINENTAL CAN CO Inc 24 Nov 1969 [26 Nov 1968] 57421/69 Heading B3A [Also in Division B8] A metallic closure cap whose skirt 11 is initially straight, is fluted by means of a tool 13 whose rim is undulated or ribbed, while the cap edge, which is not fluted by the tool 13, is turned inwards by the tool part 16. A liner 19 may be used as a seal. The cap is applied to a bottle neck 20 which is centred in an annular resilient collapsible die ring 22, and a punch 23 seals the liner 19 on to a lip 24 while a follower ring 25 which has a conical lead face 27 contacts the die face 28 and compresses the ring material inwardly, thus causing valley walls 29 in the skirt 11 to press against the crests of threads 21 in the bottle neck, thereby forming thread elements (30) in the skirt 11, Fig. 6 (not shown), while the pressure on the closure rim 18 collapses portions thereof inwardly along the threads 21 thus forming thread leads. In a further embodiment the skirt (111) may be slightly flared with a substantially cylindrical rim (118), Fig. 9 (not shown).
