Abstract

670,072. Bottling; stoppers. ALUMINUM CO. OF AMERICA. Oct. 20, 1947 [Oct. 21, 1942; Sept. 21, 1943], Nos. 27976/47 and 27977/47. Classes 125(ii) and 125(iii) A bottle, can, or like container 6 is sealed by placing thereon a metallic closure blank the skirt 2 of which has an annular bulge or shoulder at at 4, in which is positioned a liner 5 larger in size than the sealing surface of the container, Fig. 1, applying pressure to the blank (as by causing relative movement between the container and a pressure block 7 comprising a knock-out plunger 8) to force the margin of the liner into engagement with the side sealing surface and superimposing a portion of the skirt on the margin of the liner, Fig. 2. In a modification, Figs. 7, and 8, pressure applied to the top 31 and bulge 34 of a blank causes the shoulder 37 to bear against the margin 38 of a liner 35 and to force the margin around the container finish and a portion 39 of the skirt, of smaller diameter than the shoulder, slips over the margin further pressing the liner against the side of the container and drawing the flat portion of the skirt into intimate contact with the top of the container. The closure may be secured by subsequently re-forming the skirt to a threaded configuration, as by application of a revolving roller 9 or by the lug and bead arrangement of a snapon type closure, Figs. 9-11 (not shown), the lugs being preformed or formed simultaneously with the pressing by a member (not shown) co-operating with the block 7. The liner may be paper, cardboard, pulpboard or like slightly compressible material or deformable material such as cork or rubber. The pressure block may form an element in a bottle capping apparatus such as that described in Specification, 234,352, [Class 125(ii)], and further illustrated in Fig. 5 (not shown),
