A head 1 which applies both a closure 20 and then a metal foil cover cap 42 to a bottle mouth 41 includes a chamber 3 in which is mounted a pressure member 5 on a spindle 6 and comprising a ram 50 and a sleeve 51 urged to the position of Fig. 1 by a spring 11. A passage 24 is periodically connected to a vacuum pump so that when a closure 20 is supplied to the chamber via a passage 4 it is drawn by suction on to the pressure member. As shown, the closure includes a skirt 61 and a central hollow plug portion 60. The head and bottle platform 35 move in a circular path and when the closure is received by the pressure member the platform is raised and the bottle mouth forced against the closure whereby the pressure member is raised against the spring 11 until the spindle 6 strikes a stop 54. Upward movement of the ram is thus stopped, and the closure is then forced home as illustrated in Fig. 3, with the sleeve 51 within a collar 15 which is recessed at 16 to receive the closure skirt. The closured bottle is then withdrawn, and a metal cover cap introduced to the chamber through the passage 4 and similarly drawn by suction on to the pressure member. The closured bottle is then raised to the position of Fig. 2 so that the cap covers the closure, and in this position the head moves under a split roller 37 which forces a plunger 30 downwardly against a spring 31 so that an annular inclined surface 32 of the plunger forces a number of slidable segments 33 radially inwardly. The segments have resilient faces 34 which compress the flange of the cover cap around the closure and bottle wall, after which the bottle is lowered and removed. Specification 987,398 is referred to.
