Abstract
1,080,276. Bottle caps; cap applying apparatus. VEREINIGTE KAPSELFABRIKEN NACKENHEIM G.m.b.H. July 23, 1965 [July 23, 1964; Jan. 8, 1965], No. 31640/65. Heading B8T. A bottle cap has a frusto-conical skirt 17 with indentations 13 providing openings, the free edge of each indentation faces away from the cap top and rests upon the top of the adjacent cap in a stack. Such a stack of caps is placed in a channel 7 of a capping machine in which the lowermost cap is held by a ring 12. Bottles are conveyed by a belt 2 to a position below a cap supplying head 4 after which the bottles pass to a position below a cap applicator 16 which presses the caps on to the bottles. A piston and cylinder 19 transfers the head 4 to the lowermost cap in the stack in which position compressed air is fed to the head through an inlet (23), Fig. 1a, not shown, and a flexible diaphragm (9) is forced through slots of a cup (22) and grips the cap. The head is returned to a position above a bottle and the cap is released. At the cap receiving station the bottle is received by an apertured wheel and clamped in position by pivoted members which engage the bottle neck and also guide the cap on to the bottle top; such pivoted members enable bottles of different heights to be capped.
