914,444. Applying closures to bottles. SHIELDS, W. A. May 25, 1961, No. 18913/61. Classes 125(2) and 125(3). An intermittently rotating table 19 moves a plurality of vials v, with caps c loosely fitted thereon, in succession along a stationary support 13 to a cap securing station at which a reciprocating and rotating plunger 24 lifts and rotates each vial and an upper rotating plunger 52 is lowered to hold the cap against the rotating vial and rotate it therewith, crimping heads 95 being simultaneously actuated to secure the cap in the vial by rolling the skirt r, Fig. 11, underneath the headed neck. The plunger 24, which is initially flush with the support surface 13, is rotated by a chain drive 32 and is reciprocated by a cam operated lever connected thereto through a universal coupling. The head 52 is rotated by a belt 70, engaging a pulley 62 having a member 64 engaging a flat 61 on the spindle 56, and is reciprocated by a cam-operated lever acting through a ball race 81. The crimping rollers 95 are carried by pivoted levers 89 actuated by a cam 104 which is reciprocated vertically by a lever 109. The caps c are of the type provided with shielded needles n and the head 52 is recessed at 53 to accommodate the shield. In a modification, Fig. 15, the crimping rollers are replaced by stationary blocks 127 bolted to holders 120 in the crimping levers 89. The support surface 13 is supported at adjustable heights on the base 12 by replaceable or removable spacers.
