Abstract
681,624. Feeding bottle caps. FARRER, J. O. (Waitkens. F., and Andrew, C., [trading as A. W. Machine Co.].) April 27, 1951. [April 28, 1950] No. 1057G/50. Class 78 (i). Relates to apparatus for sorting flat caps, i.e. caps having heights less than their diameters. The caps pass from a hopper 3 into a hollow rotatable member 7 which is keyed to a shaft 10 and the exit end of which is formed as a flange 19. The bottom 21, Figs. 4 and 5, of an annular groove 20 formed in the flange slopes inwards towards the periphery of the flange and forms a shoulder 22. A series of teeth 24 on disc 23 face the groove 20 and are shaped as shown in Fig. 3. The disc 23 is keyed to the shaft 10 and can be moved along it by turning a nut 26. Caps slide down the member 7 into the space between the flange 19 and disc 23. If orientated incorrectly the crown of the cap is presented to the teeth 24, Fig. 4, and the cap rests on the shoulder 22. The cap is carried around by the rotating parts until it reaches a position where it falls away from the shoulder and slides over the bottom 21 into the member 7. If a cap is orientated correctly its inside will be presented to the teeth 24 and it will slide off the tooth between the top and the sloping portion 21a, Fig. 5, of the groove into the space 35 and roll therealong to a delivery channel. A rotatable wheel 42 with peripheral irregularities extends into the delivery channel and agitates the caps to prevent jamming. Caps in the member 7 are agitated by plates 33 on the disc 23.
