Abstract
984,004. Container rim inspection machines. ANCHOR HOCKING GLASS CORPORATION. July 26,1962 [July 26,1961], No. 28792/62. Heading G1M. A machine for detecting dips in the rims of jars 5 comprises inspection heads 4 mounted on a rotatable turret 3, the heads being lowered by means of a cam on to the rims of jars 5, which are moved along a path adjacent the heads 4 by a star wheel 7, rollers 47 and friction shoes 46 being provided to rotate each jar 5 while it is in engagement with a head 4. Each head 4 (Figs.1, 9) comprises a levelling plate 61 having rollers which position the head on a jar and a sensing roller 65 mounted by a pivotable member 66 on the levelling plate 61. If the roller 65 passes over a dip of sufficient magnitude, a contact 74 on the pivotable member 66 engages a contact 75 and completes an electrical circuit. The depth of dip necessary to close the contacts 74, 75 may be adjusted to any desired value. If no dip sufficient to close the contacts 74, 75 is present, the jar 5 is held in the star wheel 7 as it passes a take-off wheel 8, by means of a vacuum holding system, and is released on a wheel 9. If the contacts 74, 75 close, the vacuum system is released and the jar is received by the take-off wheel 8. An electrical circuit is provided to operate the vacuum holding system,and bath the turret 3 and the star wheel 7 are driven by the same motor 10.
