Abstract

1,176,766. Grinding. H. STRUERS CHEMISKE LABORATORIUM. 18 June, 1968 [19 June, 1967], No. 28967/68. Heading B3D. An apparatus for polishing or grinding samples comprises a wheel having a horizontal polishing or grinding surface and rotatable about a vertical axis, and a stationary cam means 5 above the surface for engagement by circular rolling surfaces 10 on the samples for guiding the samples along a path having alternate positions running outwards and inwards respectively and being oppositely inclined to the radial direction. The samples may be metallographic and mounted in weighted holders having annular faces for engaging the walls 5 of the cam which is formed in a member 4 supported above the polishing wheel. A central hub 12 is disposed within the cam and is formed with guide rails 6 which co-operate with the walls 5 of the cam to provide the alternate outward and inward portions of the path. The portions are offset from the radii of the wheel so that when a sample holder is placed in the path, the resultant of the rotational force of the wheel and the reaction of the cam rotates and advances the samples around the path. The wheel has a marginal lip so as to retain a polishing agent, e.g. aluminium coated. A polishing cloth impregnated with diamond paste, or polishing or grinding paper, may be placed on the wheel.
