Abstract
A bottle capping machine of the rotary turret type, Fig. 1 (not shown), is provided with interchangeable heads for applying tear-off caps or crown caps respectively. An axially movable workshaft 11 has an internally threaded lower end 13 to which the heads (20, 200), Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), may be removably secured by means of of an externally threaded bush 17, an annular collar 24 being connected to cap applying mechanism and having a portion 27 and a step 28 which interlock with a recess 15 and a seating 14 on the lower end of the shaft 11. The collar 24 is adjustable on the bush 17 by means of a screw 26 which engages an unthreaded band 22 on the bush and a similar connection is made between the shaft 11 and a second unthreaded band 21 on the bush by means of a screw 30. The collar 24 carries recesses (19), Fig. 6 (not shown), for receiving a wrench to disengage the head 20 (or 200) from the shaft 11. The head 20, shown engaged with the shaft 11 in Fig. 4, has a cap engaging spindle 29 slidable in the bush 17. As the head 20 is lowered to apply a tear-off cap 80 to a bottle 70, a hold-down member 41 slides on rollers 42 in a bore 38 of the spindle 29 thereby compressing a spring 41a until a member 39 on the bottom end of the spindle 29 presses the cap home on to the rim of the bottle. Segments 46 pivoted at 49 in the collar 24 then move downward relative to jaws 43 which are now stationary, being mounted on the spindle 29 by means of a collar 40. The segments 46 thereby cam the jaws 43 inwards to crimp the cap 81 on to the bottle neck. Applying crown corks.-The head 200 is detachably secured to the shaft 11 in the same way as the head 20. A cap engaging spindle 229, Fig. 7, has a cap receiving portion 239 and a magnet 238 which holds a crown cork 280 supplied to the head before the head is lowered by the rotary turret mechanism. Continued downward movement of a throat member 243 relative to the spindle 229 forms the skirt 282 of the crown cork 280 against the bottle neck.
