Abstract

[Also in Division B8] A method of screw-capping containers comprises feeidng caps and containers separately to a capping station, the caps being guided in a substantially horizontal path above the container, pushed vertically downwards by a plunger 33 simultaneously on to the container and into a chuck 10, and being lowered on to the container. Gripping of the cap 31a is achieved by a sleeve 27 bearing down on an elastomeric gripper 25 which is thereby compressed radially inward. Rotational drive for screwing the cap is derived from a central gear 13 (Fig. 4) meshing with a gear 15 which drives the chuck through a torque limiting device including spring-loaded spheres and spherical recesses. Synchronized vertical movement of the plunger 33, gripping actuator sleeve 27 and chuck 10 is derived from cam surfaces 36, 38 and 39. The capping heads may be used singly or in line banks, or two or more may be rotatably mounted as in Fig. 4. Chuck 10 may comprise a collet 61, Fig. 5, or in a modification the chuck has spring-urged jaws 68, Fig. 6.
