Abstract

1,213,872. Filling kegs. BURNETT & ROLF Ltd. 28 Jan., 1969 [16 Feb., 1968], No. 7793/68. Heading B8T. Beer kegs and similar containers to be filled are carried inverted, by chain conveyer 23, to a filling machine. Simultaneously, a ram 11 is retracted and a ram 14 extended. The ram 11 is then extended, but the filling head 16 still retains its uppermost position relative to the supporting platform 18 by maintaining the force on ram 14. This motion engages head 16 with neck 4 and lifts the keg from the conveyer 23. Further extension of ram 11 brings a skirt 6 into contact with an abutment plate 22 which is held in position by a ram 19. The thrust thus applied, together with the weight of keg 1, causes the head 16 to be pushed back against ram 14 and brings skirt 5 into engagement with the supporting platform 18. Keg 1 is thus clamped between platform 18 and abutment plate 22. In this position, beer or other liquid is supplied through the head 16 around the outside of self-closing valve 7, against a carbon dioxide back pressure. As the filling occurs, the gas is drawn off through spear 8 and a duct in head 16. The weight of the keg and the beer is transferred through the skirt 5 to supporting platform 18. When the filling is complete, valve 7 is closed and ram 11 is retracted, thus transferring the filled keg back on to conveyer 23. Platform 18 moves away from skirt 5, eventually reaching its lowest position relative to head 16. At this stage, head 16 disengages from neck 4. Conveyer 23 removes keg 1 from the machine. Because abutment plate 22 is vertically movable, it allows the machine to accommodate kegs of various sizes.
