Abstract
1,201,709. Filling machines. KARTRIDGE PAK CO. 11 Dec., 1968 [26 Dec., 1967], No. 58900/68. Heading B8T. A machine for filling aerosol-type containers with a pressurized propellant has a filling head mounted on the machine by a bracket 34, the head including a sleeve 31 having an upper extension 32 and lower extension 33, and a sleeve 55 axially slidable around sleeve 31 and extension 33, the sleeve 55 forming a chamber around the neck of a container 12 which is supplied with pressurized propellant via port 67 from a line 18 and a spring-biased valve 70 for filling the container, excess propellent being exhausted back to the propellant supply line via a port 76 and valved line 77. In operation, the container 12 having a valved cap 24 loosely fitted on its mouth is engaged by a member 72 at the lower end of sleeve 55 and the cap 24 is lifted off the container mouth by vacuum through line 63, ports 62, 61, 66 and the passage between a crimping collet 52 and sleeve extension 33, the cap then seating around the collet 52 and within a sealing ring 75. Pressurized propellant is then supplied to the chamber around the container mouth to fill the container, after which the propellant supply is stopped. The sleeve 31 and extensions 32, 33 are then lowered within sleeve 55 to fit the cap 24 on to the container, after which a plunger assembly 42, 46 is lowered hydraulically to open the jaws 53 of collet 52 to crimp the cap on to the container. During crimping a valve 78 in low pressure exhaust line 77 is opened to allow the excess pressurized propellant to boil off through the line 77. The filling head (10), Fig. 1 (not shown), may be mounted on a rotating table machine (14), (15), the bracket 34 being secured to a rod (28) reciprocated by a cam track (30). Propellant is supplied to the container via line (20), metering device (16) and line 18, and excess propellant is returned to the supply line (20) via line 77, a chiller tank 80 where the propellant vapour is converted back to liquid, a line (83), a pump (84) and a line (85).
